2 Second Sunday of Easter 8. April 2018 Acts 4:32-35 Psalm John 1:1-2:2 John 20:19-31 At Peace with His Wounds Do you know that you are a peace breather? At your baptism, God breathed the Holy Spirit onto you, meaning that right now you have the peace of God in your lungs. Is that how you experience yourself? Your congregation? When you walk out the doors on Sunday morning after worship, do you breathe peace into the places you go? Jesus shows up unannounced at the home where the disciples have barricaded themselves. He offers them peace. He reveals his scars to them. Then he breathes the peace of the Holy Spirit onto them. It is astounding that after the agony and the trauma Christ endured on the cross he can show up with any peace at all, let alone enough peace to share with precisely the people who left him high and dry on the night before the crucifixion. Christ can breathe peace onto others because he has made peace with his own woundedness. He is at peace with his scars. He finds power in telling their story. When Jesus meets the disciples they too are bearing the marks of that night. Fear has lodged like a splinter under their skin. The marks of isolation and terror are all over them, and these marks send them running for cover. Even if they had the courage to begin to speak, they would not find power in telling the story of their wounds. The peace that God breathes into our lungs is a peace that begins with the revelation that our wounds and our woundedness, like Christ's, are not to be feared. At the revelation of Christ's wounds, our own lose their power. They no longer ruin us. Breathe in that peace. Breathe it out into the places you go. Stewardship Update Stewardship is offering our Time, Talents, and Treasure in response to all the blessings God has given us. Extra pledge card packets are on the Ushers Table Pledge Cards and Time & Talent Forms may be placed in the offering plate or mailed to the church office, Attn: Financial Secretary. As of 30. March, 59 families have pledged $246,216 and 65 adults and 9 children have submitted Time & Talent sheets. The Financial and Time & Talent Forms are available on the web: Pledging for Mission as of 1. April BIGGER than a Building! 66 families have pledged $479,040 to our 3-year mission appeal. Total amount received to date for BTAB! is $399, Thank you for your generous support. Attention Bread Bakers! Trinity has a long-standing tradition of providing Communion Bread in place of wafers during the Easter Season. This year, we are again soliciting the help of volunteers to sign up to bake bread for a specific Sunday (seven in all). We provide the recipes; you provide the labor of love. The two loaves may be dropped off before the early service, or left in the church refrigerator the day before. The Sign-Up Sheet is on the Social Hall s bulletin board. Copies of the approved recipes are located in the Altar Guild Mailbox in the copier/mail room. Please contact Carol B with any questions. 2

5 Paul and Joyce Paul and Joyce are originally from New Jersey. Paul worked as a chemist for Union Carbide and for a French chemical company. Joyce taught music and served as choir director in several Lutheran churches. Their daughter and son-inlaw (also musicians) live in Kensington, MD. Joyce and Paul are now delighted to be close by so they can help out caring for their 18 month old grandchild. Welcome Joyce and Paul! Red Geraniums for Pentecost Sunday 20. April, at 1:00 PM at Jim V's home in Leisure World In honor of An update on our Afghan family Our family has been very busy. Aziz, the father, passed his driving test and is looking for employment; he hopes to secure work in his field of civil engineering. Three volunteers are tutoring his wife Sediqa in English, and Hina, their 6-year-old daughter, is very happy in her kindergarten class. Thanks to the very generous donation of a Trinity family, Aziz and his family will soon have a 2004 Chevy Malibu to make work, shopping, and outings much easier. You may place your order form and cash or check, made payable to Trinity Lutheran Church, in the flower envelope (which you will find in the card rack in the pews), and place the envelope in the offering plate, mail it to the church. Easter 2018 at Trinity As spring approaches, we hope to provide some social opportunities for the family, such as visiting the National Zoo and going to local parks and sites of interest. We have scheduled a potluck at Trinity for Saturday evening, June 23, so the congregation will have a chance to meet the family.
