1 THE MESSENGER T R I N I T Y U N I T E D M E T H O D I S T C H U R C H INSIDE THIS ISSUE: VBS Shake It Up Montana Mission Fundraiser New Address Disaster Relief Team Thank You Scriptures for July Calendar, Birthdays & Anniversaries FROM THE PASTOR S DESK. Annual Conference has come and gone for another year. Susan and I are blessed to be back at Trinity. During the last year I believe God has brought us together as a congregation and we are seeking to fulfill the mission God has for us at this time in this place. I thank each of you for your commitment to Jesus and to your dependence on the Holy Spirit to lead Trinity into the next year. Although Curtis Buchanan, our Annual Conference Delegate, will give his report on this year s Conference in the future, I wanted to share some of my thoughts about Annual Conference. I believe there were some important decisions made this year that will be beneficial to the future growth and financial stability of the church in our Western North Carolina Conference. After some debate, Annual Conference approved reducing the number of districts (areas in which local congregations are organized) from the present 15 down to 8. This transition will be completely in place by For some this reorganization may seem a step backward. Making districts larger it may first appear that local congregations would lose some of their identity, becoming little more than a number. However, after considering all the debate, I believe reducing the number of districts will streamline the structure of the conference and allow us to discard the institutional model that the church has used over the years and return to the movement that John Wesley (the founder of Methodism) and Jesus intended for believers. There are signification differences between institutions and movements. Institutions are resistant to change and reward the status quo. They value holding the party line, not making waves, lack the ability to try new approaches because of the complicated approval processes. Institutions do what they ve always done the way they have always done it without regard to effectiveness. Often institutions are surprised that the same approaches to situations don t yield different results. Institutions lack a way to evaluate their efforts. Their goals are either unclear or are not measurable. They retreat inward when threatened or challenged and resist new technology. In institutions, the power and control comes from the top down. Movements, on the other hand have the ability to adapt to changing situations. They are willing to evolve and re-structure to become more effective. Every idea and direction is worth consideration in a movement. Movements constantly evaluate methods and their progress. Movements aren t afraid to utilize new approaches or technology. In fact, movements may be the first to understand the advantages of technology. They set clear goals that are measurable. Movements take on a life of their own. They seem almost alive. Movements gain momentum like a snowball rolling down hill. A movement s influence and effectiveness goes from the bottom up. One example of the differences between an institution and a movement was the recent uprising in Egypt. The institution, the Egyptian government, had power and control. The government had great resources, both financial and human. A well filled treasury and a strong army seemed to insure that the institution would survive. However, the movement that opposed the institution won the day. Why? It seems to me that the movement was people oriented. The Egyptian people united around a common cause and a common goal. There wasn t a clear chain of command. Each group banned together for a common good. The movement used new technology (the internet, facebook, twitter, and youtube) to proclaim their cause and let the world know of their struggle. In the end, the institution couldn t react fast enough to quell the movement s enthusiasm. Our Annual Conference s mission is: Follow Jesus, Make Disciples, and Transform the World. I believe coming a movement AGAIN will enable us as the church of Jesus to fulfill our conference s mission and the mission passed on to us by Jesus.to be His witness in the world. Let s become a movement for Jesus.

2 THE MESSENGER 4th OF JULY LUNCHEON Sunday, July 3, :00pm The Emmett Wilson Bible Class invites you to a BBQ Chicken, Baked Beans, Slaw, Rolls, and Desserts lunch immediately following the 11:00am Worship Service. JESUS ON THE 4th OF JULY By: Marilyn Ferguson We gather round to celebrate on Independence Day, pay homage to our country as the children run and play. With barbecues and picnics and fireworks in the air, the flag we own is proudly flown to show how much we care. The stars and stripes spell freedom she waves upon the breeze, while bursts of colors can be seen above the towering trees. This is all quite wonderful we revel in delight, but God above in divine love has brought this day to light. With just a stroke of liberty, a touch of His great hand, He gave democracy to us and helped this country stand. The stripes upon our stately flag were touched by His sweet grace, each star of white that shines so bright reflects His loving face. So as you turn to face the flag for battles that were fought, be filled with pride for those who died and freedoms that were bought. But don t forget to thank the One that gives the bright display the reason why we paint the sky on INDEPENDENCE DAY! SPAGHETTI LUNCH This coming Sunday, June 26th the Montana Mission Team will host a Spaghetti Lunch immediately following the 11:00am Worship Service. Make plans now to stay after church or come in to get a carry out plate. GET YOUR AUTOBELL CARWASH TICKETS TODAY! $15.00 each... The Montana Mission Team will leave on Saturday, August 6th headed to Heart Butte, Montana to teach Bible School and help make repairs to homes on the reservation. Please be in prayer for this group. Thank you to all who helped with or came and supported the car wash/grilled chicken dinner this past Saturday. We love all you Trinity folks. We have some wonderful adults and youth who are very excited about being the hands and feet of Christ in Heart Butte Montana and we thank everyone for their prayers and support.
