Surfside United Methodist Church April, 2015 APRIL USHERS 8:30 AM Bruce French John Boyd Shirley Christy Bob Lang 11:00 AM (TBA) Dear Church Family: Spring and Easter Spring is a wonderful season for many reasons. The weather is turning warmer. The flowers are blooming. The leaves aren t falling off the trees faster than they can be raked. It is baseball season again and everybody s team is still in contention to be champions. And, it is time for Easter! I love Easter. I love the sunrise service on the beach. I love the excitement of our worshippers in the services in our beautiful sanctuary. I love the opportunity to share the Good News with people who rarely come to worship. We all have unchurched friends, neighbors, family members, co-workers, and fellow students. Would you prayerfully consider inviting at least one unchurched person to come with you to worship on Easter Sunday? Your invitation could be the difference for someone entering into a saving relationship with God through His Son, Jesus Christ. In addition to our three Easter morning services on April 5, we have a number of other special services planned for April. On April 12 we will celebrate Communion at the 8:30 a.m. service and receive our current Confirmands at the 11:00 a.m. service. We have 11 outstanding young people who will be publicly professing faith in Jesus Christ and uniting with this congregation. You won t want to miss being in worship to support these youth on their exciting journeys of faith. On April 19, our youth group is providing the leadership for both of our services. They will present the message, the music, and fill all the roles of leadership. We will also hear a brief presentation by a representative of the Gideon s that Sunday. At the time I am writing this we don t have special scheduled for April 26. But, that Sunday is still a month away! In our Wednesday night ipraise services we are studying the I Am sayings of Jesus. We will finish this series on April 8 and begin a new series on April 15. Right now I thinking about something to do with tax-collectors and sinners. Ha! Changing gears Director of Children s Ministries The Staff-Parish Relations Committee is pleased to announce the hiring of Cathy Schwinghammer as our newest staff member. Please join us in warmly welcoming Cathy and her family to our congregation. We will introduce her to the congregation in worship on Easter Sunday. And, one more thing... Called Charge Conference I have requested of and been granted permission by our District Superintendent, the Rev. Richard H. Knight, to convene a Charge Conference in our sanctuary on Thursday, April 9, at 7:00 p.m. The purpose of the Charge Conference will be to receive and take action on a proposal to purchase a second parsonage with monies left to our church by Mr. Bill Williamson for this stated purpose. This fulfills one of the more expensive goals of our Long-Range Plan as adopted by our congregation May, Specifically our plan states, Pursue parsonage for senior pastor as a donation (add to 5-10 year plan if not feasible). Mr. Bill s dedication to Christ and commitment to SUMC is still making a difference for Christ and this congregation even after his death. What a legacy! All members of the Church Council are voting members of the Charge Conference. All members of the church are invited to attend and are free to speak. Please contact me if you have any questions. Hoping and praying that you have a Christ-filled Easter and Spring!

Page 2 Do You Like Yourself? DISCIPLESHIP PASTOR Here's a challenging question: do you like yourself? Do you truly, genuinely, like... you? If you had a choice, would you be friends with yourself? According to Webster's Dictionary, to be authentic is to be "not imaginary, false or imitation". To be authentic is to be "genuine, veritable, bona fide, being actually and precisely what is claimed". I don't know whether you've ever considered this, but the only thing that we can genuinely claim to be is ourselves! So how good "a you" are you? And are you "good enough" for you? I recently read about a high-powered advertising executive in Chicago. Her friends and colleagues described her as the most creative, articulate, accomplished and funny person they knew. But the woman rarely saw herself that way! You see, she had grown up in a home where performance was always graded, and, as a result, the woman had an extremely critical perspective. To put it simply, her personal grade of a C- was everybody else's A+!!! Do you tend to be overly critical of yourself? So many of us not only want to be someone else, but we also desire to be a perfect version of that someone else! Here's another example - see if you can relate! There was a certain author who, when his first book was published, acted like an idiot! That is to say, instead of congratulating himself on producing such a wonderful book after years of tireless effort, the author wanted to throw himself off of a cliff instead, simply because he had used the wrong verb tense in one sentence - of the entire book! Why do so many of us, so often, choose to rob ourselves of much well-earned joy, by refusing to celebrate our achievements? Here's an interesting factoid: Amish quilters deliberately add one mismatched patch to each of their handmade quilts in order to remind themselves that only our Maker, God Almighty, can create perfectly! We all need to remember that! We should only try to be first rate versions - of ourselves! Because that is exactly who God created us to be! And if it's good enough for God, it's good enough! Blessings on you as "you"! Pastor Kim MOMENTUM SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS When adults talk about the problems they have with Christianity and the church, they often name certain attitudes and behaviors they believe are practiced too often by well-meaning Christians - attitudes like judging others, condemning people of other faiths, rejecting science, injecting politics into faith and being anti-homosexual. In Adam Hamilton's study, "When Christians Get It Wrong", we will tackle these issues and address the how's and why's of Christians getting it right when it comes to being Christ in the world. This six session study will be held every Sunday in the Church Parlor, from 9:45AM-10:45AM throughout the months of April and May. Please join us. Please talk to Pastor Kim for further details.

Page 3 SPIRIT NIGHT CLASS ACTS OF GOD Perhaps the greatest human question of all is the question of suffering. If God is good, why does God allow so much pain in the world? This is a question not often talked about in church, but our upcoming Spirit Night class, "Acts of God" will address this question head on! "Acts of God" helps participants see more clearly the goodness of God in everyday life and how God is still at work even when life gets hard. This Study Series offers much needed biblical perspectives on those very nagging questions about pain and suffering and other difficulties of life. Questions like: - why is this happening to me? - when will God finally answer my prayer? - what possible good can come from this? - how can I get through this? - where is God? This is not an easy study in which to participate! Instead of answering these questions with trite, "canned" answers however, this study will lead participants into discussions which are both honest and raw. Participants might, in fact, see themselves in some of the very same scenarios discussed in class! But ultimately, participants will be drawn closer to the heart of God - if they are open and willing! This study lasts 12 weeks, so we will be sharing in discussion and learning throughout the months of April and May. We meet in Room 8/10 every Wednesday at 6:30PM. Please join us! Talk to Pastor Kim for further details. SUMC Friendly Seniors We had 84 Friendly Seniors on our trip to Charleston on March 13 and it was a wonderful time to learn, see the historical sights, eat some low-country cooking, shop at the market, see the Angel Tree, and visit the only tea plantation in America. Needless to say, we had a full day and the trip was so well-planned by Susan and Robin Harvey of Second Wind Tours. Coordinating two buses was quite challenging, so probably in the future we will take only one. Looking ahead, let s get the word out about our adventures and sign-up early, if you want to go. Everyone seemed to have a good time and enjoyed the trip. The March meeting was a St. Patrick s Day Celebration with playing some Bingo and enjoying wearing green. The meal was luscious, as usual, with happy Irish music in the background. Festive green decorations added a special flare. Thanks to all who worked to make it an enjoyable event of green fun. On April 21, Pat Messinger will be with us to give some good advice about the benefits of exercise and sharing some appropriate tips for Seniors, as we mature. Pat has had extensive experience as a Senior exercise leader in Texas, before she came to this area. Come be with us and enjoy the program. As usual, we will be bringing a favorite dish to share, and some food for South Strand Helping Hand. Books will be there to trade or take. At the end of March our Snowbirds usually start back north and we will miss them. Know that we look forward to your return every year and know you are appreciated. We hope that our Friendly Senior events bring you joy as you visit for the winter season. God bless you as you return to your homes. Many of our Seniors have written about events in their lives in the Surfside United Methodist Lenten Devotional. If you have not read them, you can see them on the church web-site at surfsideumc.org. Thank you to each of you that contributed your stories of faith. As we look forward to all the events of Easter, we rejoice for the plan of salvation and self-sacrifice of Christ, our Lord. Happy Easter Day to you!

PAGE 4 News: Information shared at Cluster Meetings by a representative of the Wallace Family Life Center in Bennettsville includes news that they are no longer able to use the Box Tops for Education coupons. This program is for accredited school programs, which WFLC is not. When they receive donations of coupons, they pass them on to a local school in the area. I am asking Nancy Yongue, who has taken it upon herself to mail off the soup bar codes and the coupons, to only send the soup labels to WFLC. Any teacher at SUMC may contact Nancy, if you would like our donations of Box Tops for Education coupons to go to your school. Keep clipping for mission they will be used somewhere. Carole Adkins has our UMW reading program ready to go! There is a sign-out card in each book each book is clearly marked for one of the reading categories all books set out on the Narthex bookshelf are current and will help qualify you for one of the reading program plans. Talk to Carole if you have questions, or if you need a reading form. There are current issues of Response Magazine, too. Columbia Bethlehem Community Center has a new director, Whitney Chisholm. Upcoming Events: With the Lenten Luncheon and the Cluster Meeting behind us, the only SUMW event coming up before we break for summer is the Mother-Daughter Banquet. Read the details for this annual event in another part of this newsletter. Joy and Quest Circle members are in charge this year. Please mark May 8 th on your calendars and join us. The UMW organization is looking ahead to its 150 th Anniversary. In 2019, everyone will be involved in celebrations. March 23, 2015 is the kick-off date for The Legacy Fund. Each circle leader has information on this special offering, taking place right now. Every member of UMW is encouraged to give something to The Legacy Fund before the end of the year. The fund is to ensure our PURPOSE continues. Easter Reflections: As we traveled to Tennessee recently, we got off the Interstate and stretched our legs at a big antique mall along the road near Hendersonville. This is one of my favorite things to do. There were some IDEALS magazines set out in one booth, which reminded me of Easters passed. These beautifully illustrated soft-back books are full of poetry and stories and each edition was devoted to a single subject. The ones I saw were on Easter and Mother s Day. Have any of you saved IDEALS magazines from the past? Lucky you. Be alert, stand firm in your faith, be brave, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love. I Corinthians Happy Easter Happy Spring MARY BAKER CIRCLE Mary Baker Circle will meet Wednesday, April 8th at 10:30 in the Fellowship Hall. It's time again for the Surfside United Methodist Church annual Rummage Sale. We will be accepting donations beginning Monday, April 27 at 9:00 AM in the Family Life Center. We will continue to accept your items until the actual sale begins, which is Friday afternoon, May 1. Also, workers are also welcome to help with sorting and pricing Monday through Friday morning, and with sales Friday afternoon and Saturdays. The March meeting was deemed a success. The event "Meal with a Message came directly out of the SC Men N Ministry Conference Feb 20th weekend. Bruce Reese put this event together and we are thankful to him for his efforts. The BBQ dinner was really good and the message even better. This message was delivered at that Conference and Bruce bought the DVD ( 4 Chairs ) with the hope of passing the message on to others. This is what it means to be on fire for GOD. It was well delivered and challenged us all and left you wanting to be a better husband, father and Christian. Thanks again to everyone, men and women, who took their time to come out and join with fellow Christians for an evening of food, fellowship and a great message. It would be great if all or at least most of the men who attended this event would join us at our next meeting in April. 7 PAGE 7 Dear Family, Church If you have not yet had a chance to come by the FLC, you need to do so. Michelle Raabe has painted a beautiful mural in memory of Drew Lattin, depicting some of the things that he loved best. This mural was donated by John and Laurie Lattin. On behalf of the CDC family, I would like to thank them for making us a part of such a tribute. Our parent volunteers have been preparing for our annual Easter Egg Hunt and visit from the Easter Bunny. The CDC will be closed March 30-April 6 for spring break. We are continuing to register for summer camp and the school year. You can stop by, call, or visit our website for more information on these programs. In an effort to reach more families in our community and help our current program grow, we are considering opening an 18 month old + class. At this time, we are wanting to get a feel for the interest in such a class. Please contact the CDC office if you or someone you know is interested. Graduation is set for May 29 at 7:00 p.m. in the FLC. Please join us in this celebration. Much Love, Stacey Cleveland

A special Thanks to all who prayed for my healing, sent cards and visited during my time of recovery. Art Chamberlain With a grateful heart, I want to thank everyone, who held Bert, in their hearts and prayers, over the last year of his life. You loved us, visited us, sent us wonderful beautiful cards, all year long! Whatever your blessing: meals, sympathy cards, flowers, visits, memorial contributions to Jason s House, attendance and service for his Memorial Celebration, Thank You, I will never forget you. God bless you, Shirley Christy Thank you so very much to each of you who prayed, sent cards, wished me well and made the most delicious meals for Mark and I during my recent accident. I am forever grateful for your acts of kindness and sincerely appreciate everything you did to help me get around. I am very thankful to be a part of this loving and caring congregation! With love and gratefulness, Kesha and Mark Sims MR. HARRY S FUND: Memorial donations for Harry James Jamie Altman, Jr, are going to set up this new fund to provide scholarships for our children, youth and college age young adults to be able to participate in church activities, ministries, retreats, mission trips, etc. In the last seven years 13 of the children and youth involved in the ministries of SUMC have lost their dads. This often makes it very difficult for these children and youth to be able to afford to participate fully in the ministries and activities we offer. So that no child or youth has to feel embarrassed by not being able to afford to participate or ask for help, this fund will be readily available as long as there are sufficient funds available. Thank you for your gifts honoring Mr. Harry and providing for our young people.

PAGE 9 Surfside Youth News Dear Church Family, As usual, we had a lot going on at Surfside Youth this month. We started out the month by having a movie night. The week after that our senior high kids and parents were offered a College Prep Seminar with Chris Parsons from College Bound Consulting. The next two weeks were great times of spiritual renewal and commitment for our youth. First we had our confirmation/youth alpha day away at MB State Park, and then we spent a weekend in Greensboro for the Acquire The Fire Youth Conference with another 3,500 teenagers! Last but not least, our youth group adopted the Easter Egg Hunt this year to support our children s ministry. We have a lot to look forward to for the month of April and beyond. On April 12 th we will be visiting church members at NHC. April 19 th is Youth Sunday. Youth will usher, acolyte, and participate in many different ways during our worship services that day. And we will end the month with a Family Kingdom outing! Beyond these events, we are also preparing for 2 major events this Summer: Salkehatchie and Youth For Salkehatchie this year, we will be sending kids to not one, but two summer camps! And Youth 2015 is a once-every-fouryears national United Methodist conference in Orlando. Stay tuned for ways you can help support our youth in these events.
