1 Surfside United Methodist Church May 2014 MAY USHERS 8:30 AM Rod Smith (C) Mike Bedenbaugh Cynthia Bedenaugh Bill Doggett 11:00 AM Steve Meletes (C) Church Office will be closed! Dear Church Family: We ve just experienced our annual celebration of Jesus resurrection from the dead. Of course, we call this event Easter. Easter is a time for hopes, dreams, and possibilities. It is a time that reminds us that no matter how bleak things seem, God is still on the throne and miracles still come true. A week before the first Easter Sunday, Jesus led His followers from Bethany where the day before He had raised Lazarus from the dead up to the Holy City. For the most part, Jesus was welcomed warmly along this short trek of less than two with shouts of Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the King of Israel! His entrance into east Jerusalem had a triumphant feeling about it as the crowd waved palm branches like we did in worship on Palm Sunday. It was a glorious day indeed. While the common folk couldn t get enough of Jesus and couldn t stop talking about His miracles, the religious leaders couldn t stop worrying about how Jesus was a threat to their self-given importance. So the Pharisees said to one another, See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him! (John 12:19 NIV). Human nature never changes. Like the Pharisees, I m afraid we too often look to our own interests instead of the interests of God. We forget that the Church (big C ) is of God and Christ is its head. We are just here to follow our leader and do His bidding. As the days passed, the religious establishment schemed and readied for action. They bribed one of Jesus disciples. When Jesus crossed over the Kidron Valley to the Garden of Gethsemane, they had Jesus arrested and took Him before the High Priest. The very person who should have been Jesus number one supporter was His biggest critic. Jesus was messing with the High Priest s power and position. Jesus was lowered into a pit hewn out of stone. It was a lonely place at best. The next day the Jewish leaders took Jesus to their hated enemy, Pilate, the Roman Governor. Because their fear of losing their grip on power was so intense, they were willing to use this sworn enemy if it meant they could rid themselves of this menace whom the people were calling the King of Israel. Although Jesus was no threat to Pilate, Pilate had Jesus flogged so that he would not appear weak to his Roman superiors including Caesar. Then, Jesus received His crown of thorns and He was led out to Golgotha where He was crucified between two criminals. Capital punishment was used as a deterrent in Jesus day. People were crucified along the road in plain sight as a visual reminder of what happens when you go against Rome. Hanging on that wretched cross of shame, Jesus breathed His last breath and gave up His Spirit and darkness covered the land. It filled the hearts and minds of Jesus followers, as well. But, that was far from being the end of the story. There s a tomb in Jerusalem right outside the gates of the city. It remains empty to this day, except for the millions of living people who have visited it over the years. It was likely where Jesus lifeless body was placed. But, on Easter morning there was an earthquake unlike any before or since. The stone covering the entrance to the tomb was rolled away. And Jesus rose victoriously from the dead. My friends, this is the truth of Easter. Easter came as a result of a power struggle between God and Satan. God demonstrated forever that His power is the greatest force in the entire Universe. So, on our calendars Easter has come and gone for the year. But, Easter is never really gone. Jesus is as alive today as He was on that first Easter and the power of God is still as operative in our lives as it was in the first disciples. So REJOICE! Hallelujah! Jesus is alive!!! Easter Blessings,

2 DISCIPLESHIP PASTOR PAGE 2 THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT... I'd like to share with you the beginning lines of an I received recently... The read as follows... Dear Lisa Kim Eanes, congratulations! On behalf of the Admissions Committee of Duke Divinity School, it is my pleasure to inform you that you have been admitted to our Doctor of Ministry degree program to begin in August, Let me tell you what a thrill it was to receive that ! I had been running to the mailbox every day since April 1st, hoping to receive some confirmation of my acceptance to Duke...but to no avail! And finally, that arrived on the evening of Good Friday...April 18th! Perhaps you recall back in January, that my newsletter article revealed that I had been contemplating a very tough decision? Well, that January newsletter article was referencing my decision to apply to the Doctor of Ministry program at Duke! For a couple of years now, I had been considering whether or not to pursue a doctoral degree...but it just didn't seem the right time, at that time. In October, 2013, however, when I re-visited the Duke campus to attend their annual Convocation and Pastor's School, I felt a stronger-than-ever pull to pursue their Doctoral degree program. So I investigated my options further, and found out the necessary information I needed to move forward with this endeavor. As I approached the March 15th deadline, I was considering many factors...going to school while continuing to serve in my current parish; trying to balance academic requirements with ministry responsibilities simultaneously; and simply returning to the educational arena after being completely out of school for 24 years! But after much prayer, reflection, and conversation with individuals whom I respect and trust, I moved forward with the application process. And so here we are! The Doctor of Ministry program at Duke Divinity School is structured on a cohort model that organizes learning around five short term intensive residential seminars. Each seminar is followed by a period of structured distance learning during which students engage one another and faculty on a regular basis. The distance learning component includes assignments requiring integration of course material with the ecclesial practices that are a part of the students' daily work. Coursework takes place over five terms spanning approximately two academic years. Duke Divinity's D.Min. does not require full time residence, thus allowing church leaders to pursue intensive advanced study with outstanding faculty and resources while remaining in their vocational setting full time. Because this degree operates on an alternative pedagogical model, the terms do not follow the regular academic calendar. Rather, terms are organized around the liturgical calendar to accommodate students who are fully employed pastors subject to the special demands of certain seasons such as Christmas and Easter. Back in January, when I introduced my desire to pursue this degree to SUMC's Staff Parish Relations Committee, they graciously gave me their full support, on behalf of our church. Consequently, I am asking the same thing of you directly now... It would be so very meaningful to me to have your full support of this academic endeavor while I continue to serve as Discipleship Pastor at SUMC. I need no financial support in this educational endeavor, and I plan to utilize my vacation weeks (4 per year) during this two year period in order to cover my time away from the parish for the week long study intensives on the Duke campus (5 total). All I am asking of your support, thus, is through your diligent and serious prayers...your frequent and consistent encouragement...along with your personal interest in my efforts to pursue this degree in order to enhance our ministry together as the Body of Christ for the world. Thank you, in advance, for your continued love and care. Pastor Kim

8 PAGE 8 Dear SUMC Family, We ve had an event-packed month at Surfside Youth. Let me share some of the highlights with you, and some things to look forward to! Last Month This last month was a fun one for us at Surfside Youth. We started out by sponsoring 6 teams for this year s American Red Cross Mini-Golf Tournament. It was one of those have fun while doing good e v e n t s. O u r church s name was on signs around the miniature golf course (we were the only church represented), which our kids were proud of. The event organizers were so excited to have us bring such a large group to their event. Also last month our youth had the opportunity to go on an outing to Nascar Speedpark! Some of us adults were more competitive than the kids (I won t name names, but one of them is our Sunday School c o o r d i n a t o r!! ). Both during Sunday morning and evening we focused on lessons getting us ready for Easter. Our youth are learning to make connections between Old Testament stories, Jewish tradition, and the work of Jesus at the cross. Coming Up Looking forward to upcoming events, please mark your calendars for Friday, May 13th. Our youth will hold a barbecue fundraiser in the FLC for Salkehatchie. Additionally, if you choose to eat in, we will have presentations from our kids about their Salkehatchie experiences. Still on Salkehatchie, thank you so much to those of you who have already filled up prescription bottles with quarters for Salkehatchie. We couldn t do this without your help! This month we ll focus lessons on Daniel and the aftermath of Easter. We also have a few outings and fun events coming. Come join our youth group twice on Sundays: Sunday Mornings at 9:45am Sunday Nights from 5-7pm. Gym is open for games/sports at 4pm. 9 PAGE 9 SUMC FRIENDLY SENIORS We had great food and a wonderful program on April 15, although the crowd was smaller than when our Snowbirds are here with us. We miss them! Ron Wing, resident author of children s books, talked about his stories and read some of his favorite excerpts. He has a new book off the press, Rebecca s Watch, which is an exciting mystery story. The cover features a familiar photograph of Litchfield Plantation. Ron s grandsons, Jack and Will, came along to give praise to their grandfather s creations. See Ron, if you would like more information about his books, or better yet, purchase some for the One Million Book Project. What a treat for some child to receive a signed copy! We have a projected list of the programs for the next year and they are exciting. See the list below. Along with the programs, we would like to take some trips. Stay tuned. We already have plans for a trip to the Mepkin Abbey in Monck s Corner, SC, on Dec. 5 to see the special Creche display. Please mark that date on your calendar. As we enjoy the beautiful coastal environment in which we live, rise to be thankful every day for all our blessings and especially, the joy of having a plan of salvation to provide forgiveness for our mistakes and lack of discernment. We all have a purpose for being here and it is up to us to be our best for the Kingdom. Come be with us on May 21 at Chelsea Jo s to enjoy the delicious food and to express our gratefulness to Jo and Lester Leonard, their staff and our volunteers for all they do for us on Wednesday evenings throughout the fall and spring. What a commitment and service to our congregation and community! Aging can be a wonderful experience if we choose to face each day with a thankful heart. Remember these five rules to be happy: 1. Free your heart from hatred. 2. Free your mind from worries. 3. Live simply. 4. Give more. 5. Expect less. John Wesley narrowed his version of living to three rules: 1. Do good. 2. Do no harm. 3. Walk with God. Jesus narrowed it down to one: Love one another. Upon invitation, two or three singers gather at the bedside and give the free gift of song to people nearing the end of their lives. The songs are short and repetitive, full of peace and forgiveness and the invitation to rest. Although Threshold Choirs are deeply spiritual, they are not aligned with any organized religion. Dyer, a retired United Methodist minister who has served several local churches, received the training to be a Threshold Choir leader and is reaching out to the public in her search for singers. The first meeting will be held this month. If you would like to attend, please chodelldyer@aol.com.
