Lent Modules 2017 Details about Centre locations will be sent to you nearer the time. If you require any other information please contact: Diane Hardy at the Diocesan Office, 53 New Street Chelmsford CM1 1AT Tel:
It s inspiring to see such a good choice of modules to participate in during Lent. Whether you want to be quiet and reflective, learn a new skill, or be challenged in your thinking, there s something here for you. There are, in particular, many modules which will help you as we are called to live as missionary disciples. These modules during Lent this year are part of the CCS programme, but also are open to everyone. The normal CCS programme will continue throughout the summer term so that the CCS members can consider, in their own groups, their part in God s mission and vocation. There s plenty here to choose from! CCS members are expected to choose at least one - but you can do more. And anyone else can join in as well. Look for something that grabs your attention, challenges what you already know and equips you to serve in God s kingdom. Revd Dr Elizabeth Jordan Lay Ministry Adviser ejordan@chelmsford.anglican.org

Module Lent 9 What s the point of the Trinity? This module will look at why we believe in one God in three persons, why it's important to the Christian faith, and what difference it makes to the Christian life. Is it a mathematical conundrum which isn't relevant to us, or is it the very foundation of everything about the Christian faith and life? We will be looking especially at how the Trinity works out in the cross and salvation. Tutors: Revd Phill Sacre Monday evenings 7.30pm pm St Mark s March 6,13,20,27 and April 3 Great Clacton Cost 30 Module Lent 10 Exploring the Atonement This module is a Survey of the Wondrous Cross and seeks to discover the meaning and significance of the death of Jesus exploring such questions as: is the Atonement a mystery that we shall never be able to plumb the depths of, or is it just a theory? If the Atonement is a theory, then is there one theory that is dominant, or is multifaceted? In exploring these questions, we shall examine the way in which Jesus viewed His death and why it was necessary; the Biblical images and metaphors relating to the Cross; the theories and models of the Atonement including the most recent Nonviolent theory; and the theories of some modern theologians. Tutor: Revd Brian Kyriacou Wednesday evenings 7.30pm pm St Anne & St Lawrence Church March 8,15,22,29 & April 5 Elmstead Market Course fee 30
Module Lent 11 Memorials as Pastoral Care especially services of All Soul s. Course Content Background :- The recent Grove Booklet on All Souls Services of Remembrance claims for All Soul s services that this kind of event is the fastest growing form of service across the English Anglican church (Leach, 2105 p3). Leach s claim is based on private conversations and statistical analysis provided by the Archbishop s Council and has been borne out in our own local experience. The popularity of these services seems to meet a need for people to gather to remember loves ones who have died. However Leach agrees that there is some confusion about what message of hope and encouragement would be appropriate to deliver. This course sets out to frame the Christian response, the issues faced and the theological underpinning of such a service. 4 sessions:- (2 2 ½ hours) Covering the following elements Pastoral care in the context of death. The grief cycle. the time around the funeral, post funeral visiting, sustained contact, and the helpfulness of community memorial type services at a later date. What happens when you die? The churches teaching(s) on post-mortem - resurrection hope - alternative theological positions - annihilationism, second chancers, universalism. The different positions in the context of a memorial service where there will be non -Christians and Christians morning non-christian and Christian spouses / family members. All soul s services - history of communal memorials from the 1 st century to the Benedictine innovation of All Saints and All Souls ( the difference between these two). The elements of a the service invitation, welcome, setting, lighting, music, candles, service sheet, prayers, sensitivity of reflections (Theology of Hope), close of session, personal prayer, refreshments, follow-up. The symbolism of the service - the use of light and hospitality as theological motifs. An exercise of compiling an All Soul s service. Tutors: Revd Liz Paxton & Wednesday evenings 7.30pm pm Mrs Helen Grover February 22 & March 8,15,22 Parish Rooms, St Andrew s Centre Course fee 30 Halstead
Module Lent 12 Introduction to Icons Session 1 Saturday 4 th March pm -5pm Tiptree United Reformed Church, Chapel Road, Tiptree, Essex CO5 0HP We will be looking at the history of Icons and learning to read them. Session 2 Saturday 18 th March pm 5.45pm St John the Baptist Orthodox Monastery, Rectory Road, The Old Rectory, Tolleshunt Knights CM9 8EZ Fr Kyril, the Abbot, has invited the group to eat our packed lunches with them, have a tour of the buildings where we will experience icons made by the community for worship and end with Vespers in one of their chapels. For one afternoon we can experience a different spirituality. Please bring packed lunches to both days. Drinks will be provided. Tutor: Mrs Isabel Adcock & Saturdays as above Mrs Sue Streete March 4th & 18th Venues as above Course fee 15 Module Lent 13 Primed for Prayer St Paul tells us to pray constantly. That is easier said than done and not at all as easy as it sounds. The course will be experiential i.e. of a more practical nature, involving some prayer and aims at exploring, and recognising, what can trigger prayer in daily life. For example, 'looking' is not the same as 'seeing'. Previous courses from Linda on prayer have been about how to pray, and perhaps about what to pray. This one is almost all about motivation to pray. To prime something is to set it ready to work. Being primed for prayer could be useful. Tutors: Canon Dr Linda Barnard Thursday mornings 10.00am noon Diocesan Office March 9,23,16,30 & April 6 Chelmsford Course fee 30
Module Lent 14 The Development of Holy Communion from the Latin Mass to Common Worship The aim of this module is to trace the development of Holy Communion from the pre-reformation Latin Mass through the English Prayer Books of 1549, 1552 and 1662 to Common Worship. Each week there will be a Celebration of each Communion Service, as it would have been at the time, followed by (or preceded by) a detailed discussion. It is aimed at anyone currently studying on the CCS (or having completed it previously); any Christians interested in how Holy Communion has come down to us today; and very useful for Ordinands and those in training for Licensed Lay Ministry. Tutors: Revd Simon Law Thursday evenings 7.30pm pm Revd Michèle Marshall & March 9,16,23,30 & April 6 Revd Paul Haworth Course fee 30 St Gabriel s Church Pitsea
