2 The Most Holy Trinity May 22, 2016 From Msgr. Figliozzi: Scriptural Reflection for the Week O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in all the earth. (see Psalms 8) On this Feast of the Most Holy Trinity, we rejoice in the ways God has revealed Himself to us. Limited beings that we are, we would be hesitant to affirm the God who Is. Throughout all of SALVATION HISTORY God makes known that He is THREE PERSONS IN ONE GOD. God is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. With last Sunday s celebration of the Coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, we complete the yearly account of the Christian Mysteries. Today, we celebrate the summary of God s saving work among and through His people. Therefore we pray as the Psalmist: O God, how wonderful your name! How wonderful your very Being! In a society that wishes to erase any trace of the God who created the world we are called to keep holy His Name. This means we refer every aspect of our being to His Being. We are literally nothing without God! Today is a day to thank God for some basic things we all take for granted. We take for granted how our existence depends upon Him! We take for granted the sacrificial love which saved us form the effects of our sins. And we take for granted the Church which guides, sustains and nourishes us in our journey to Heaven. After you receive your next Holy Communion, pray: O Lord, my God, how wonderful to have your name in my mind, on my lips and in my heart. First Holy Communion at 10am Mass Today, May 22nd, several of our children will be receiving the Eucharist for the first time. Please keep them and their families in your prayers. Community Bible Study continues every Thursday at 7:30pm in the School Cafeteria. Come and bring a friend! Last Weekend s Collection and Attendance Parish: $4, Attendance: 4:00pm 137 8:30am :00am 137 Total : 410 Thank you for your support. One Final Thought I believe that God has created each soul and that soul belongs to God, and that each soul has to find God in its own lifetime and enter into his life. That is what is important. Blessed Teresa of Calcutta

4 Canadians will regret legal assisted suicide, Cardinal Collins predicts Toronto, Canada, Apr 17, 2016 / 06:02 am (CNA/ EWTN News).- The coming legalization of assisted suicide in Canada will threaten the vulnerable, hide killing with euphemisms, and threaten the consciences of those who oppose it, Cardinal Thomas Collins of Toronto has said. On Thursday the Canadian government introduced legislation to legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia under the federal criminal code. We re all deeply concerned that this is a sad day for Canada, the cardinal told CNA April 14. While people see assisted suicide as a simple solution, he said, once people begin to consider what the practices really means to society, and its threats to the vulnerable, they begin to realize that this is not the way to go. Catholics, Evangelical Protestants, Jews, Muslims and the Salvation Army, all opponents of legalization, will hold an April 19 press conference on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, the Canadian capital. The very people who are most involved in helping people by the bedside while they are dying or while they are suffering are the ones most opposed to killing those entrusted in their care, Cardinal Collins said. The gathering would say to Parliament: thus far and no further. This is just not right. It s not right. He characterized the effort as the ecumenism of practical love. The new legislation was required by a February 2015 Canadian Supreme Court decision. The ruling said that doctors may help patients who have severe and incurable suffering to kill themselves, and ordered Parliament to create a legislative response. That is the root of the problem, Cardinal Collins said. He described that court decision as sadly unanimous. The fundamental move towards implementing euthanasia or assisted suicide is itself troubling, he added. Previously, under Canadian law those who counseled, aided, or abetted a suicide faced up to 14 years in prison. The cardinal said the law previously barred the provision of noxious substances to people. Now, it s possible that giving a substance like that is now going to be considered a form of health care. What have we come to? He criticized using the phrase medical assistance in dying to describe taking a substance and injecting it into a person, and that makes them die. That s not called dying. The word for that is killing. To not know the difference between dying and killing is astonishing. He warned against euphemisms that are comfortable and pleasant and sweet, but which do not describe what is happening. When we are ashamed, troubled, by what we are doing, I think we always leave the light of clear language. We don t want the light to shine upon what we are doing. The cardinal said Catholics should strongly encourage palliative care for those in severe pain and for the terminally ill. This, not suicide, is true medical assistance, he maintained. He said the government also has an obligation to support palliative care if it is going to set up a legal euthanasia regime. That s the positive way to deal with this very real issue, he said. He also stressed the need for conscience safeguards to protect individuals who are committed to healing, and not to killing. They say that there s nothing in the law that somebody must do this. Well, there s nothing in the law. Yet. But this has to be taken care of. He said individuals and institutions will certainly face pressure to take part in assisted suicide or euthanasia. What protections are being offered? There are no protections offered in this bill at all, he said. Backers of the bill say that Canada s 10 provinces and three territories will provide these protections. The cardinal questioned this. For all of Canada, they re making it acceptable to provide a noxious substance to somebody. But they re not providing the same nationwide protections for people s consciences and for 'havens of refuge'. He said that in this cold world of euthanasia, there must be places where you know where you will be safe. He worried of the pressures on the elderly to hurry up and die. At a time when our priority should be fostering a culture of love, and enhancing resources for those suffering and facing death, assisted suicide leads us down a dark path, he said in an April 14 statement. He noted that the Hail Mary prayer focuses on now, and at the hour of our death. In these days ahead, may that reflection guide us as in a spirit of love, mercy and compassion, we journey with all those who are suffering.

6 Woman bulldozed to death in China signals new wave of oppression One member of the crew allegedly said Bury them alive for me I will be responsible for their lives. An officer at the local police station told China Aid that the two members of the crew were detained but the officer did not disclose their alleged crimes. Local Christians said that the government departments in charge of the area were not present to oversee the demolition. Li said that police took an unusually long time to arrive after the murder was reported. Beijing, China, Apr 27, 2016 / 03:02 am (CNA/ EWTN News).- Two members of a Chinese church demolition crew have been detained by police after they allegedly bulldozed the wife of a Christian pastor who had attempted to halt the destruction of her church. Bob Fu, president of the NGO China Aid, said that Christianity has become a major target in culture and is treated as a political and security threat to the regime, he told CNA April 25. Bulldozing and burying alive Ding Cuimei, a peaceful and devout Christian woman, was a cruel, murderous act, Fu said in a previous statement from China Aid. This case is a serious violation of the rights to life, religious freedom and rule of law. The Chinese authorities should immediately hold those murderers accountable and take concrete measures to protect the religious freedom of this house church s members. Ding Cumei and her husband Li Jiangong were pushed into a ditch and buried alive by the bulldozer as congregants watched. Her husband was able to dig his way out, but she was not. Li headed Beitou Church in the city of Zhumadian in central China's Henan province. A government-backed company had sent the demolition crew to the church after a local developer wished to take the property, China Aid said. Fu told CNA that the situation for Christians in China has changed under President Xi Jinping, who took office in He likened the situation to a new Cultural Revolution. Under the previous presidential administrations of Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao, Fu said, officially Christianity was not overtly regarded as a national security threat. Suspicion and crackdowns instead focused on unregistered churches in both Protestant and Catholic churches. Now, even registered churches have faced increased scrutiny and persecution. Church leaders at government sanctioned churches have faced heavy criminal sentences. Christians, including Catholics have been asked to change into a different version of belief under the banner of Sinicization of religion in order to make Christianity compatible with socialism, Fu said. David Curry, president and CEO of Open Doors USA, told Fox News that there has been a change from previous trends to recognize Christians as productive members of Chinese society. China has the goal of nationalizing Christians, he said. Curry s organization monitors anti-christian persecution around the world. He said there are many ways to marginalize China s Christian churches, including rezoning church properties to allow for demolition. Some local pastors are required to meet weekly with local officials to discuss their sermons. It has had a chilling effect on religious freedom in China, he said. Fu added that China s constitution guarantees freedom of religious belief. Religious freedom is a universal, fundamental first freedom, he said. Religious freedom for Christianity can foster a more stable less volatile and more prosperous China.
7 St. Vincent de Paul Society & Parish Social Ministry (OUTREACH) As we celebrate the mystery of the Trinity we also realize the mystery of how much God loves and cares for us. Believing in this, our lives can then overflow with thanksgiving. If we have a grateful heart, we will see everything as gifts from God. May God give us the grace to be grateful for all he has given us and show our gratitude by generosity to others and to those who are in need. We hope that you will continue to be as generous as you have been by giving to the St. Vincent De Paul Society pantry. This week the pantry is in need of juice, syrup, canned potatoes, and canned pasta. However, all non-perishable food items will be appreciated. If you know someone who is suffering, please tell her/him to come on Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday between 9am and 1pm. We will happy to help make things better.
