2 Mission. St Faith s prays regularly for the mission of the church in Nsawam, Ghana and Rod and Glenda s church in Sendai Japan. There are however, other missions with which two members of the congregation are associated. Valerie Pither s daughter Carrie serves as crisis consultant for Africa Inland Mission (AIM). She is based in Nairobi, Kenya where her job is to build resilience into gospel ministry through good security practices. This ensures that both the voice and presence of the gospel will continue in difficult places. The Mission has been working in the field of more than 120 years. It is a complex problem to balance the risks of war, political turmoil, terrorism and crime with the leading of the Holy Spirit. AIM is an evangelical interdenominational organisation with the aim of seeing Christcentred churches among all African people. It sends missionaries to Africa to partner with the African Church and to reach Africa s unreached peoples with the good news of Jesus Christ. See also Iris Walters grandson Mark is a member of Holy Trinity Church, Nailsea in Bristol. He is involved with Katanga, an impoverished slum town in Uganda of 20,000 people. After being involved with the township for a number of years Mark realised the enormous difference that existed between his life opportunities in the West and the appalling poverty that existed in Katanga. He and his wife lived in a caravan in England for two years with a life of relative poverty, realising that despite this they still had opportunity and little fear of being able to provide for the morrow. In consultation with contacts in Uganda, he founded, Hope for Life Katanga which works to support families towards living a self sufficient life. He sees the organisation as one which facilitates one individual to support another. This is done through the work of local staff that provides education, livelihood opportunities and free basic healthcare. It is based on a shared desire to create a better world for others. Hope for Life offers just that, an opportunity to move out from hopelessness into becoming an active educated and positive member of African society. The charity is supported by an executive team of the founders based in both Africa and the UK, based on a model that is committed to sending 100% of donor s gifts to Uganda. (Clare has reduced her paid hours to enable this to happen). As well as working for two paid days a week (and other days as a volunteer) Jackie runs her own upcycling business, under the name Coastal Drift. She takes vintage clothes, and embellishes them other fabrics. The results can be spectacular. Our charity shop is now the only permanent outlet for Coastal Drift clothing, in partnership with Jackie. Come and along and see her latest creations...you ll be amazed! 4

Taking the Gospel according to St Mark as a starting point, this course raises important questions about change, repentance, and how we can become living evidence of the good news. Examples are taken from the rest of Mark s Gospel as well as contemporary and historic Christians. Dr Mike Fluck and Canon Tom Kennar will lead this course on Wednesday evenings, in Church, at 7.00pm. Beginning on Weds 13th March 5

The Stations of the Cross are points along the journey of Jesus from his condemnation by Pontius Pilate to his being laid in the tomb. The stations made have varied over the centuries since they became popular in the middle ages, but the traditional pattern is: 1st Station: Jesus is condemned to death 2nd Station: Jesus carries His cross 3rd Station: Jesus falls the first time 4th Station: Jesus meets his mother 5th Station: Simon of Cyrene helps Jesus to carry his cross 6th Station: Veronica wipes the face of Jesus 7th Station: Jesus falls the second time 8th Station: Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem 9th Station: Jesus falls a third time 10th Station: Jesus is stripped of his garments 11th Station: Jesus is nailed to the cross 12th Station: Jesus dies on the cross 13th Station: Jesus is taken down from the cross 14th Station: Jesus is laid in the tomb The Stations originated in attempts by pilgrims to follow Jesus last earthly journey through the streets of Jerusalem (the Via Dolorosa), but were eventually adapted to enable those unable (or unwilling) to go to the holy places themselves to imagine themselves there. Many churches (including St Faith s) have a way of the cross marked out with images representing the traditional stopping points. This is to enable us (either in groups or individually) to travel in imagination with Jesus on his own last journey, and - even more importantly - to make that journey our own. The 14 stations at St. Faith s are normally visited during a service in Lent. The point of the exercise is not primarily to think about long past events or even to sympathise with Jesus in his sufferings (though both may be useful parts of our devotion) but rather to carry our own cross with him.
