3 COLE WORKSHOPS SESSION I: 9:15 a.m. 10:30 a.m. I-A I M A CHURCH OFFICER NOW WHAT DO I DO? The decision to say "Yes" to God's call to serve as a church officer is exciting! The congregation votes "Yes" to affirm your call, you've been to one (or more) Session, Deacon or Trustee meetings, and you're starting to learn more about what it means to be a church officer. This workshop will focus on teaching you some of the framework things you will need to know as you do your work as a church officer including: what makes us unique as Presbyterians, what is the Book of Order and which parts are the most important for you to understand, and answering your questions about serving as a church officer. Leader: Rev. Jody Noble, Pastor, St. Luke s Presbyterian Church, Titusville I-B ESTABLISHING A LANGUAGE LEARNING CENTER IN YOUR CHURCH TEACHING ENGLISH AND PROVIDING OUTREACH TO THE COMMUNITY Participants can expect to learn the basics of teaching English as a second language, as well as what it takes to create a Language Learning Center in your own church. Topics covered will include working with an English language learner, working with a beginner, FAQ s on the background needed in working with non-native speakers (immigrants vs. refugees vs. asylees, etc.), how to build a volunteer and student base, and applicable curriculum for an ESL program. Leader: Iman Al-Shabibi, Program Director, Language Learning Center, Maitland Presbyterian Church I-C INS AND OUTS OF CHURCH INSURANCE If you feel like you re stuck in a maze trying to figure out how to properly insure your church, this workshop is for you. Participants will learn what they need to consider when insuring their church s property building, contents, and vehicles. Leader: Pat Patterson, Ruling Elder, Westminster-by-the-Sea Presbyterian Church and Licensed Insurance Agent I-D BASIC PASTORAL CARE VISITATION TIPS Pastoral care visitations are not limited only to pastors; however, many lay leaders are afraid, uncomfortable, or unequipped to effectively/efficiently make hospital, homebound, nursing home, crisis/tragedy, prospective member, funeral home, or member visits. This workshop will explore the problems, principles, and procedures for pastoral care visitations from both a clinical (social sciences) perspective and a classical theological (spiritual) viewpoint. Special attention will be given to practical helping skills, caring for the hospitalized, and visiting the bereaved. Leader: Rev. Dr. Carmelo Mercado, ChFC, Chaplain, Westminster Communities of Florida I-E GETTING READY FOR FINANCIAL STORMS People don t plan to fail; they fail to plan. This can be true with the overwhelming duties of church finance. Create your church s financial preparedness checklist so that you reflect good stewardship of God s resources that He has showered on your congregation. The session will cover aspects of Stewardship planning, Bookeeping practices and Accounting essentials. Leader: Nina Wilson Jones, CFP Finance Manager I-F CLERK OF SESSION SURVIVAL SEMINAR You are now the Clerk of Session for your congregation. What does the job involve? This workshop will cover the most important tasks of being a Clerk of Session: (1) maintaining and preserving the records of the session (including minutes, rolls, and registers), (2) communications within the congregation and with presbytery, synod, and the General Assembly, and (3) assisting the moderator in planning the meetings of the Session (making sure all business is scheduled and handled). Leader: Rev. Dr. Dan Williams, Executive Presbyter/Stated Clerk, Central Florida Presbytery

4 I-G COURAGEOUS CONVERSATIONS ABOUT RACE Racism is still prevalent in our society. If racial healing is to take place, we must not be afraid of the truth about race in this country past, present or future. Poet Maya Angelou reminds us that History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again. Since 2016, Hope Presbyterian Church and Washington Shores Presbyterian Church have gathered for courageous conversations around racism and racial healing through shared worship services, book discussions, field trips, service opportunities, shared spiritual disciplines and social gatherings. Join Erika, Nancy and members from Hope Presbyterian Church at Lake Nona and Washington Shores Presbyterian Church and learn from their experience and reflect on how to work towards becoming agents of change for good in the world. Leaders: Rev. Erika Rembert Smith, Pastor, Washington Shores Presbyterian Church, Orlando and Rev. Dr. Nancy Graham Ogne, Pastor, Hope Presbyterian Church, Lake Nona I-H LET US PRAY: FINDING YOUR VOICE AS A CHURCH LEADER Church officers are more than the governing body but are also called to serve as spiritual leaders of the church. In this workshop we will help leaders and officers know their purpose as spiritual leaders with some practical tools to help with daily spiritual life as well as being equipped to pray for committees, in session, and other public venues. Leaders: Jean Homrighausen, Certified Christian Educator, Maitland Presbyterian Church and Rev. Kristy Ray, Associate Pastor, Eastminster Presbyterian Church, Indialantic I-I STARTING A PODCAST This workshop will introduce the basics of starting a podcast, including what equipment you need and how to publish your podcast on itunes and other platforms. We will look at what a podcast is and how to decide if this platform is right for you. Leader: Rev. David Collins, Co-Pastor, Maitland Presbyterian Church I-J VOLUNTEERS: CALLING, ASSURING, EQUIPPING AND UPHOLDING The goal of this workshop is to provide participants with a process and ideas for calling and sustaining volunteers in the local church context. Through participation in this workshop, participants will be able to: (1) delineate elements of calling and sustaining volunteers based on a formula found in biblical call passages: (2) identify ways to address the challenge of too few volunteers to fill positions within the church; and (3) distinguish signs of burn-out in church volunteers. Leader: Dr. Cheryl Carson, CFP Associate Executive Presbyter & Certified Christian Educator COLE WORKSHOPS SESSION II: 11:00 a.m. 12:15 p.m. II-A THE BOOK OF CONFESSIONS AND SPIRITUAL FORMATION. NO, REALLY! For many of us, much of the Book of Confessions is the less familiar half of our Constitution. And maybe even a little more intimidating. In this workshop, we will explore the breadth of writing found in these statements of faith, with an eye toward bringing them into our personal devotion and corporate worship. Leader: Rev. Laura Viau, Interim Pastor, First Presbyterian Church, Titusville II-B A MILLENNIAL ON POSTMODERN EVANGELISM As a Millennial, I will talk about the ways in which my generation has failed to respond to traditional (invitational) evangelism, and we will discuss some possibilities for what evangelism could look like in a postmodern context. Particularly, we will engage ways to bring people closer to Jesus that do not necessarily involve a conversion conversation. And the 5 thresholds that seem to describe the evangelistic process which takes place prior to evangelism Leader: Rev. Ryan Gaffney, Pastor, College Park Presbyterian Church, Orlando

5 II-C RECAPTURING THE POWER AND POTENTIAL OF THE CHURCH THROUGH HOUSE CHURCHES Church leaders often ask people what they want in a church, when the more important question is, What does Jesus want in a church? Jesus final charge to his church-planting disciples was to reach the lost and produce disciples. How are our churches doing not compared to the church next door, not compared to other churches in our presbytery how are we doing according to Jesus rubric? Through recapturing the spirit of the early church through house churches, our church is seeing a New Testament church in the 21 st Century. This workshop shares our story and how we can see more of this in our day. Leaders: Rev. David Larry Kim (Presenter), Lead Pastor, Harvest; Rev. Inki Kim (Available for questions), Senior Pastor, Korean Presbyterian Church of Orlando (Vision Church) II-D DEACONS: BEING THE CHURCH IN THE WORLD The office of Deacon is a special one of extending the ministry of the church beyond four walls into the community, homes of members, hospitals and care facilities. Yours is a ministry of compassion, attentiveness, and service. How prepared do you feel for your office? How will you care for your own spirit and that of your fellow Deacons as you serve? This workshop will offer tips, inspiration and information to make your role as a Deacon meaningful and effective. Leader: Rev. Dr. Linda Wright Simmons, BCC, Chaplain, Florida Hospital and Parish Associate, Park Lake Presbyterian Church, Orlando II-E WHEN THE ROLE IS CALLED UP YONDER This workshop builds upon the Book of Order affirmation that, The Church s ministry is a gift from Jesus Christ to the whole church (Book of Order, G-20101). Ministry in all forms is first and foremost a GIFT not a job, not an obligation, not a life sentence! So, what would it mean if the call to serve as a church officer was presented in this light, by means of enticing personal benefits and alluring spiritual opportunities? Come explore practical ways this gracious perspective inspires God s people to eagerly embrace Christ s higher calling. Leaders: Rev. George Wilcox, Pastor At Large II-F PENDING AMENDMENTS TO THE BOOK OF ORDER This workshop will provide an overview of the amendments to the Book of Order that were referred to the presbyteries for their affirmative or negative votes. The workshop will examine each amendment with attention to how it will impact the ministry of the session and congregation. Presbytery will vote on these amendments at the March stated meeting. Leader: Rev. Dr. Dan Williams, Executive Presbyter/Stated Clerk, Central Florida Presbytery II-G FOREIGN MISSION THEN AND NOW In this workshop we will look at what Presbyterian mission looked like 100 years ago and how things are different today. The look back will focus on one mission family s experience in what is now Pakistan and what is happening in Presbyterian congregations there today as Christians are often threatened and sometimes persecuted for their faith. Leader: Rev. Dr. Paige McRight, Retired Minister and Former CFP Executive Presbyter II-H PLANNING A SABBATICAL FOR YOUR PASTOR AND CHURCH The experience of sabbatical a time away for rest, stimulation and renewal can be a revitalizing event for both pastor and congregation. This workshop will detail how one church engaged in the sabbatical planning and implementation process in a highly beneficial manner. Special attention will be paid to successfully applying for the Lilly Clergy Renewal Grant which provides up to $50,000 for both pastoral and congregational renewal. The selection of a planning team, tips on the grant application process, and learnings from both church members and a pastoral recipient of the grant will be provided. Questions will be answered. This workshop is relevant for both pastors and supportive leaders. Leaders: Rev. Dr. Tim Rogers-Martin, Senior Pastor, and Ruling Elders, Eastminster Presbyterian Church, Indialantic

6 II-I CHURCH TECHNOLOGY ON A BUDGET With an unlimited budget, implementing things like security cameras, shared storage, podcasting, websites, wifi, and many more of the newer technologies would be a snap, but, what if you re like our church and wanting to offer or leverage these things but have a very limited budget? This workshop will give tips and tricks on how to do just that. We ll also share a ministry that we ve implemented where we can take computers our members no longer need and prepare them safely to be given a new life with a family or organization that can t afford to purchase one. Leader: Cecil Rice, Webmaster, Westminster-by-the-Sea Presbyterian & Sr. Tech. Project Manager, AT&T II-J WON T YOU KNOW YOUR NEIGHBOR? Do you ever wonder about the people who live in the neighborhoods around your church? Demographic info like: age, race, families or singles? Trends regarding who s moving in or what interests them? Knowing our neighbors and what matters to them can help us to reach out and meet our neighbors where they are at in life. This workshop will offer tips and tools so that we can get to know them and how to minister to and with them. It will also include ideas about developing partnerships with neighborhood businesses, schools and other organizations in order to reach out to our neighbors in new and creative ways. Leaders: Christina Greenawalt, Candidate for Minister of Word and Sacrament and Office Manager, CFP, and Dr. Cheryl Carson, CFP Associate Presbytery Executive LUNCH & LEARN 12:15 1:30 p.m. Rev. Elmarie Parker with her husband, Rev. Scott Parker. Healing Medicine: Christ at Work through His Church in the Middle East Rev. Elmarie Parker serves as a Presbyterian Church (USA) Associate for Ecumenical Partnerships in the role of Regional Liaison to Church Partners in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon. Rev. Scott Parker serves as an Associate for Ecumenical Partnerships working with the Middle East Council of Churches on projects assisting refugee children from Iraq and Syria in responding to the traumas they have experienced and in writing projects to share the work of our partners. They will lead a discussion regarding current conditions in the region where they work and live, along with how these conditions (including ISIS) are impacting PCUSA Partners and their continuing work of worship and ministry. Though there is much over which to be deeply concerned, there are also stories of hope to be heard and shared. Bring your questions and come ready to hear the witness received first hand from local church leaders on the ground in these areas of conflict and chaos.
