4 Session #1 10:15-11:30am Faith in the Inventive Age Saturday, September 20, 2014 NEW LOCATION - Sampson Middle School, Clinton, NC 2014 E 3 WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS 1. Church, Community, Preaching & Evangelism in the Inventive Age Doug Pagitt The keynote speaker will explore more fully the opportunities within the Inventive Age for issues directly effecting communities of faith. To prepare read Doug s book Church in the Inventive Age. A pdf version is posted at 2. Sabbath Keeping: Its Meaning, Purpose, & Necessity Becky Kahnt In a busy world, we can lose the natural rhythm of life. In this workshop, we explore what Sabbath is, what it is not, the purpose of it and how it is necessary for our emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being. 3. Children s Worship & Wonder Kathy Beach-Verhey & Hannah Vaughan Discover a model that provides the opportunity for children to interact with the story of God s Word in a worshipful, age-appropriate way. This model provides the time and tools for children to deepen their relationship with God. 4. A Christ Based Planning Model Bob Fry Christ gives us a planning model, one not so structured to be visible to the untrained eye, but one that produced significant long-term results. This session will focus on the vision that Christ created and how the local church might create a vision and planning process of its own. 5. Singing Psalms to Familiar Hymns and Folk Tunes Ray Mendenhall One who sings, prays twice! This workshop will be a participatory experience of singing psalms and other religious songs set to familiar tunes. The content is from a work in progress, The Psalm Retuned by Ray Mendenhall. How one can create their own devotional music will also be discussed. 6. Church Finances: Part 1 Terms of Call & Reporting Gayle Boykin This class will address issues relating to Terms of Calls for ministers and reporting requirements of the Board of Pension and various government agencies. 7. Leaders Led By Essential Tenets: For Elders & Deacons Ron Crossley What are those essential tenets officers of the church promise to receive and adopt at ordination? This session will seek to help deacons and ruling elders to identify those essential tenets in our Book of Confessions by exploring: Why do we have the Book of Confessions? How are our Confessions related to scripture? What is wrong with our Confessions? What are the essential tenets of our Reformed Faith? 8. 3 John 2-4 Walk in Faithful Health: Body, Mind, Soul Part 1: Health in the Body Cassandra Thomas Explore how to establish a small personal group or church group walking program such as Walk to Bethlehem (Advent) or Walk to Jerusalem (Lent) to improve health in an accountable, support group. Wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes for walking 1 mile together. Limit of 16 participants. 9. That s Crazy Let s Do It! Using Creativity in Youth Ministry Erin Garcia We will explore how to use creativity when planning and executing youth ministry by incorporating the crazier ideas to help create a wordof-mouth ministry with your youth. Let s gather to share some creative ideas and walk through planning and execution. Bring your best ideas to share so we can all walk away with new tools in our toolbox!
5 10. Grace & Gratitude: Can You Say What You Believe? Clare Lewis & Charles Wiley For a number of reasons, the PC(USA) has had a difficult time articulating its spiritual theological vision. Over the past few months, a lot of Presbyterians, especially younger Presbyterians, have been energized by a promising theme for Presbyterian identity and how it might shape the message of the PC(USA). Come explore this grass roots Grace & Gratitude idea of articulating our vision Horizon s PW Bible Study: Reconciling Paul Jaxie Julian This workshop provides an introduction to Elizabeth Hinson-Hasty s study of 2 Corinthians which asks whether or not we understood Paul s writing clearly in the past and to read his letter afresh in light of the issues we face in our time. 12. Adding New Disciples: Effectively Leading Through Congregational Size Transitions Doug Cushing - Let s explore the first step in the comprehensive process to unlock the potential to add new disciples by learning about congregational size-transitions. This workshop will provide clergy, church staff and lay leaders with clarity around how churches numerically grow and why they get stuck. We ll discuss strategies for breaking through barriers preventing churches from growing. Session #2 12:45pm 2:00pm 13. Church, Community, Preaching & Evangelism in the Inventive Age (repeat of Session 1) Doug Pagitt 14. Welcoming Disciples: Faith Formation for Believers at All Stages of the Journey Becky Kahnt Using the book Go Make Disciples: An Invitation to Baptismal Living, and the Water Way process, we will discuss and work our way through the stages of faith formation with small group discussions, scenarios, reflection time and large group discussion exploring how our baptism isn t a once and done thing but is a call to how to live and a call to who we are supposed to be. 15. Resources for Children s Sermons Jennifer Vanderbilt This is training for pastors and leaders who conduct children s sermons as part of the morning worship service. There are a number of interactive ideas to help children (and adults) open their minds to the Gospel lesson, celebrate the seasonal rhythms of worship, and focus on Jesus through the lens of lectionary. 16. Acting Up in Church: Drama in Worship Becky Raynor This workshop will help you get creative in your worship services, Sunday school classrooms, meetings, and anywhere else you serve the Lord. The truth is, you are probably already using dramatic techniques (responsive reading) and production criteria (sound and lighting), but we will explore new ways to expand that to include plays, choral readings, mime, and more. Using drama is a great way to reach those who are not auditory learners and it is a great way to get your congregation, class, committee, etc. involved in worship. It is something that works well for all ages. As one of my middle school students said after doing a play for church, "I will never forget this!" Handouts will be available, but this is definitely a participation workshop. Lights! Camera! Action! Get ready to let your inner star shine. 17. Technology That Fits Your Church Evan Harrison Learn how YOUR church can use technology to better reach people in your community, communicate among yourselves and enhance worship! Those who register early and do homework will receive more in-depth help in areas needed. All are welcome to come hear overviews and receive handouts. Special Offer: Register by Sept. 6 th, Evan will help you get your church s web site up and running and also help provide you with ministry tips for reaching new people in your community, and you can use the workshop time to finalize details and ask questions about things you re already doing!
6 18. Church Finances: Part 2 Internal Controls Gayle Boykin This class will address implementation of internal controls helpful to personnel dealing with the finances of the church, in addition to general finance questions. 19. Praying with the Body, Mid & Soul Chris Denny Many think of prayer as something to be spoken. Let s discover some gentle, doable ways of going to God with the whole self body, mind and soul. CANCELLED John 2-4 Walk in Faithful Health: Body, Mind, Soul Part 2: Health in Body, Mind, & Soul Cassandra Thomas Using diverse resources on health, wellness, nutrition, exercise, and stress management, participants will be encouraged to affirm healthy nutrition, exercising, sleep, and stress management as their choice for intentionally living well in body, mind, and soul. Participants should wear comfortable clothes and walking shoes as we will walk indoors 1 mile together during the workshop. *Limit of Helping Disciples Access & Enhance Their Spiritual Journey Hazel Wilson The journey of discipleship can be challenging. This session will explore an assessment tool designed to help identify where disciples are in their spiritual journey and provide guidance as they seek to grow in the faith. This tool can be used with folks beginning their faith journey or with seasoned disciples to help determine where they would best fit into the church s faith formation opportunities. 22. Dare We Bring Suicide and Depression Out In The Open? Charles Wentz - In April 2013, Matthew Warren, the 27 year-old son of evangelical pastor and author of The Purpose Driven Life, Rick Warren, committed suicide. In the United States, 38,000 people commit suicide each year. And in any year, up to 25% of society has a diagnosable mental illness. The church is a part of society and is not exempt to the suffering of suicide and mental illness. However, many churches, like much of society, are at a loss concerning these serious matters. The purpose of this workshop is to bring suicide and depression into the open light, while providing some tools for recognizing suicide and depression and facilitating treatment for those suffering in our church congregations. 23. I love to Tell the Story Ray Mendenhall - News flash! The Bible is a storybook, a book of the story of God and His people. Learning how to tell a good story helps us tell and understand God' story better. Come and learn about storytelling and telling God's story. 24. Making Those Good Ideas Work! Pat Fletcher For those of us who come up with good (and/or harebrained) ideas, there IS a way to make them work. Example: What if there was a way to start a small deli and train homeless women; open our church up for showers, breakfast foods, makeup and hair even a shelter if needed and of course a van for transportation. Join us to learn how to make YOUR ideas become a reality.
