1 TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH NONPROFIT ORG 100 POPLAR AVENUE US POSTAGE PAID CARRINGTON, NORTH DAKOTA Carrington, ND Phone (701) Zip Fax (701) Permit No Pastor Bruce Vold: Parsonage: Cell Phone: Pastor Russ Christiansen: Cell Phone: KDAK (1600 AM) Broadcast at 11 a.m. WORSHIP 8:30 a.m. & 10:45 a.m. Office Hours: Mon - Fri 8am-5pm ADDRESS SERVICE REQUESTED February 2014 FROM YOUR PASTORS As I think about February, I can only hope that it is brings less snow, more sunshine and warmer temperatures. I am tired of Winter and cold! I have had people ask me to pray for the weather because, You have a little extra pull with the Man upstairs, or some similar comment. This time of year our prayers would mostly agree upon my hope above. The rest of the year is usually a different story. On just about any given day in the spring, summer or fall seasons there would be disagreement upon what the weather should do. If one farmer has all the crop seeded or just feels caught up, rain might be welcome; whereas for the neighbor down the road with a bunch of acres left might be really disappointed with rain. The same story is true with spraying, haying or harvesting. Each person, farmer or not, has different expectations and needs. It doesn t matter if we are talking about the weather, our health, our family, our hopes and dreams, or anything else life brings. Those are some of the reasons I really like Romans 8:38-39; For I am convinced that neither death nor life, nor angels not principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, not height nor depth, nor anything else in all of creations, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. 1
2 These words remind me that God is with us in all our struggles, sorrows, joys and everyday happenings. God doesn t manipulate us or the world we live in as though we were puppets on a string and God doesn t answer every prayer of every person. (Think of the impossibility of that! Picture 2 coaches asking God to bless his/her team with victory. Pretty tough for each coach to win the same game) I like to tell people of a Yogi Bera quote when he was catching a game for the New York Yankees. The opposing batter came to the plate, used his bat to make a cross on home plate. Yogi leaned forward and used his glove to wipe the plate clean and said, Let s just let God watch this one. I truly believe that God is watching this one. God is watching, leading, guiding, encouraging, and praying for us as we live here on earth. God wants us to know happiness and success. The world may not always allow us to be happy and successful but that doesn t stop God from wanting that for us, nor does anything that goes on make it impossible for us to come to God. Nothing else in all of creation those words sound like a good guarantee of God s presence in our lives! May you know and trust that God is with you each day and that you can always lean on Him for strength when you just don t seem to have any of your own left. Pastor Russ FEBRUARY 2014 BIBLE STUDY THE WISE AND THE FOOLISH by S. Block Session 6: WISE MANAGER: Luke 12:35-48 ARE WE READY? Food (and Forks) for Thought By Judy Lake Our Parable this month is about a Manager given full reign of the household while his Master is gone. If he s wise, he ll take full responsibility and do his job without sloughing off. He ll not be surprised and unprepared when his Master does return. On the other hand, if he lets his new power over the household staff take over and he doesn t do his job, lies around, gets drunk, and treats the other employees poorly, he definitely will be surprised and unprepared when the Master returns. It ll be too late to do what he s supposed to be doing. Therefore, he ll lose his job, be punished and cast out. Jesus said that of whom much is given, much is required and expected. He relates that to us, His disciples, who claim to be Christians. Are we always doing what He expects of us? Are we prepared for His return? Will He find that we have done His will, taken care of those who are in need and loved our neighbor as ourselves? Are we caring for His household? Have we repented? Are we awake? Are we prepared? Or are we just lying around doing nothing until we think we have to? Are we as ready as the good Christian lady who told her Pastor that when she died and they put her in her casket, she wanted them to put a fork in her hand? Why? Her reasoning was that when she went to a church supper, the food was great and at the end, she was to keep her fork because pie was coming. The best was yet to come. She felt that upon her death the best was yet to come! Do we have her wisdom, her faithfulness, her readiness to meet the Lord whenever He comes? She evidently had done God s will throughout her life, helped those in need and was a good manager of what He had given her, so she was ready! Are we? 2
3 PARISH NURSE NUGGETS... from Holly Zieman, RN February is Heart Month. Pastor Bruce shared this article with me from the Bowdon Lutheran's newsletter and written by Carla Newman. Spiritual death can happen to any one of us but the good news is it's REVERSIBLE! Let's talk about spiritual death. How long does this type of death take? It can take a lifetime or it can take just a few minutes. And I believe the first organ affected during this type of death is the heart. Here's the amazing news,...this type of death is most definitely reversible! CPR...that stands for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. Cardio refers to the heart, which beats over 60 times per minute. Pulmonary refers to the lungs, which breathe 15 to 25 times per minute. Resuscitation means restoring life to someone who appears to be dead. I think we can also refer to CPR when we think about spiritual death. Many things can cause spiritual death: emotional problems, societal issues, religious struggles, even bad television can cause spiritual death. But giving all of these tumultuous obstacles over to God and letting Him carry their burden for us...is God's CPR. C=Cardio=Heart: Jeremiah 29:13 "You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart." Jesus said in John 14:1 "Do not let your hearts be trouble. Trust in God; trust also in me." P=Pulmonary=Lungs: Genesis 1:7 "The Lord God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and the man became a living being." Elihu said to Job in Job 33:4 "The Spirit of God has made me; the breath of the Almighty gives me life." R=Resuscitate=Restore life: Psalm 51:12 "Restore to me the joy of your salvation." Lamentations 5:21 "Restore us to yourself, O Lord, that we may return; renew our days as of old." Too much information to remember? Okay, let me simplify it just a bit, when we (or someone we know) seems to be suffering from spiritual death, it helps to remember CPR: Through CHRIST, God PROMISES us RENEWED life. 2 Corinthians 4:16 "Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day." God's Blessings - Parish Nurse Holly DID YOU KNOW...? As of January 15th, Trinity has raised $215, in cash and pledges designated towards the new church addition. This is 43% of our $500,000 goal. Thank you for your continued support! HALLELUJAH! Bids are being accepted through the end of January with selections being made by the end of February. Ground breaking will occur in the Spring, with anticipated completion in September AROUND THE WORLD AT TRINITY Around the World at Trinity invites you to join Valborg Ellingson on Sunday February 9 at 2 p.m. as she presents pictures and commentary about her mission trip to Madagascar.
