NAME ADDRESS POSTAL CODE TELEPHONE PARISH OFFERING ENVELOPES? YES NOT AT THIS TIME ASCENSION OF THE LORD MAY 13, 2018 Until we meet again We have many ways of saying goodbye. "So long." "See you later." "Take care.'' Goodbyes are softened with the promise of another meeting. "Till we meet again." The time between the goodbye and the reunion is filled with joyful hope and anxious waiting. Surely the disciples wondered if they had the tools they needed to survive that time. Jesus had been their leader, visionary, messiah, and friend. Without him, life would lose its centre. Jesus' goodbye came with two promises. He promised the Holy Spirit would guide the disciples in his absence, and he promised that... after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went out and proclaimed the good news everywhere... he would come again. That left them in an inbetween kind of time. After the goodbye, they waited for his coming again. In fact, that's where we are too. We are in between the visits of Jesus, a time of hope and anxiety. We often wonder if we have the tools we need to survive. We need vision and companionship on life's long road. We have at our disposal the first promise of Jesus, the gift of the Holy Spirit. That Spirit will guide us through times of loneliness, into good decisions, amid the sorrows of sad goodbyes. The Spirit is our centre. Paul Turner. Resource Publications Inc. rpinet.com PRE-AUTHORIZED GIVING PROGRAM YES Alleluia. Alleluia. Go make disciples of all nations. I am with you always, to the end of the age. Alleluia.

3 With the school year coming to an end, we find many students calling the parish, in a panic, as they need to fulfill their Christian Service Hours. The best practice is to call the parish at the beginning of the semester so that it is simple to find activities to volunteer for; don t wait until the last minute. However, if you find you are still in need of a volunteer hours we have a perfect opportunity. Our annual Family Day will be held on Sunday, June 3 and many volunteers are required for this event. Please call me at the office and we can make arrangements for you to volunteer and also have a lot of fun! Celena Komarnicki, Youth Ministry Coordinator A QUICK THOUGHT... Before he ascended into heaven, Jesus instructed his disciples to proclaim the Gospel to all of creation. As stewards of this legacy, we too are called to give witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ in our words and actions; in how we live and how we treat others. Are we sharing the life of Christ with others in our day-to-day lives? In what ways do we see ourselves proclaiming the Gospel? In what ways can we do better? PRAYER FOR THE MONTH OF MAY Heavenly Father, Your son ascended in great triumph to sit at your right hand. You sent your Spirit to watch over us, guide us and teach us to be better stewards of your abundant gifts. May this Spirit of wisdom make us better stewards of our planet, May your Spirit increase our awareness of the dignity of every human life, and show us the way to be better stewards of our neighbour. And through your Spirit, may we be inspired every day to live in accordance with the Gospel and to give witness to our risen Lord. We ask this through Jesus Christ, Your son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God forever and ever. Amen A Newborn's Conversation with God A baby asked God, "They tell me you are sending me to earth tomorrow, but how am I going to live there being so small and helpless?" God said, "Your angel will be waiting for you and will take care of you." The child further inquired, "But tell me, here in heaven I don't have to do anything but sing and smile to be happy." God said, "Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you. And you will feel your angel's love and be very happy." Again the small child asked, "And how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me if I don't know the language?" God said, "Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear, and with much patience and care, your angel will teach you how to speak." "And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?" God said, "Your angel will place your hands together and will teach you how to pray." "Who will protect me?" God said, "Your angel will defend you even if it means risking its life." "But I will always be sad because I will not see you anymore." God said, "Your angel will always talk to you about Me and will teach you the way to come back to Me, even though I will always be next to you." At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from earth could be heard and the child hurriedly asked, "God, if I am to leave now, please tell me my angel's name." God said, You will simply call her, "Mom." WELCOME to all visiting with us this weekend. Your faith and spirit enrich our community. May you travel safely and know that God s presence is always with you. HOLY SPIRIT PLANT SALE The gardening committee is having their annual plant sale. The plant sale will be Sunday, May 27 after the 10:00 am Mass. THANK YOU to this group of volunteers who attend numerous liturgies throughout the year as required. Your faithful and compassionate presence is greatly appreciated by the families of the bereaved. (Order of Christian Funerals) If you would like to join this important ministry please contact Ministry of Care pastoral associates Kelly or Charlene at for more information. New members are always welcome! PRAYERS AND CONDOLENCES.. to Linda, Jocelyn, Christine, Chantel and families on the death of husband, father and grandfather Rene Caron. HOLY SPIRIT / McCLURE That we may be more open to the fresh winds of the Holy Spirit leading us into the future of God s will for the Church and all people. McClure United Church The last book club gathering on April 17 was a very good and informative gathering. Rick Schellenberg and Sheila Morgan from Prairie Hospice led the discussion - When Breath Becomes Air. We are presently reading a mystery set in Cuba, entitled The Beggar's Opera by Peggy Blair. A Canadian detective, Mike Ellis, is hoping that a trip to Havana, Cuba will help save his troubled marriage. However, when a little Cuban boy is found drowned, Mike becomes the prime suspect. You'll have to read the book to find out how this twisted turn of events could possibly have happened. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, May 15, 7:15 pm, Conference Room C at the church. If you'd like to join us for our discussion on May15, please phone Isabelle at for a copy of the book. WE PLEDGE 5%... 4 Celebrating Mary... in the month of May MARY WAS... The gentle mother who teaches us through her own life. What is it about Mary that inspires human beings of different faith traditions in so many parts of the world? Christians know Mary as the mother of Jesus and, thus, the mother of God. She was a virgin, a young Jewish woman whose motherhood was the miracle that ultimately led to the world's salvation. In Islam, Mary also is revered as the mother of Jesus. In fact, she is mentioned in the Quran more times than she is mentioned in the New Testament of the Bible. She is regarded as a virtuous and pure woman, chosen above all other women. The virgin birth of Jesus, considered in Islam to be a prophet, is held as one of the greatest miracles of God. But those lofty depictions might make Mary seem like a far-off being, someone un-relatable to the average modern-day person. In fact, nothing could be further from the truth. Christians - particularly Catholics - and Muslims alike visit shrines to Mary, looking upon her as a source of inspiration. That's because Mary was a simple woman who allowed God to work through her to create the extraordinary. Her willingness to be open to God's plan rings true as an example for us today, regardless of our personal circumstances or whether we feel holy or worthy. Mary provides for us a model of faith, becoming the gentle mother who teaches us through her own life, showing us how to understand and practice what we believe. Mary was, throughout the life of Jesus, a regular mother, concerned about her family. Even as she was at the heart of the greatest mystery of all time, she raised her little boy and tended to her home. She would have had friends and neighbours; she even might have bickered with her husband, Joseph, as all wives do. She would have laughed at silly things her son did and cried as she worried for his future. She cooked meals and probably worried about money. Though the Bible doesn't tell us much about Mary, we can imagine her perhaps babysitting her cousin, John the Baptist, and even correcting a toddler Jesus for touching something hot or having a temper tantrum. In short: Mary is not far from us - from any of us. Whether we're mothers or not, we are humans whose struggles are not really so removed from Mary's. We can learn from this holy woman, even if we are not so holy ourselves, and we can strive for the kind of spiritual simplicity she achieved. It's not easy, no. But it does start easily enough. It starts for us as it started for Mary, with a simple "Yes. Jennifer Scroggins MEMORARE Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. Inspired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.
