2 MISSION STATEMENT: The purpose of Christ the King is to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to people and to make them disciples of Jesus. Welcome: We are pleased that you are here to join us in worship today. We pray that our time together in God s word assures you that you are loved by God and your sins are forgiven because of Jesus Christ s life, death, and resurrection. If you are visiting with us today and we can be of any assistance to you, please let us know. Record of Attendance: We ask that all who are worshipping with us today would honor us by giving us a record of your attendance. Please fill out the blue card and then hand it to the center aisle. If you will be fellowshipping with us at the Lord s Table today, please fill out the communion registration on the blue attendance cards. Prayer Request: If you have any prayer requests, please place them on an attendance card. If you would like your request included in the prayers today, please inform one of the ushers and they will inform Pastor. Children are always welcome in the worship service. At Christ the King we believe that it is important for the whole family to worship together whenever possible. In order to assist you and for your comfort, we have a room just off the sanctuary that has a one-way glass, and we also have a nursery. If one of these areas would be helpful to you the usher will be happy to assist you. Communion Statement: The Lord s Supper is celebrated at Christ the King in accordance with doctrine of Holy Scripture and the confessions of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod and the glad confidence that as we receive the bread and wine we also receive the very Body and Blood of Lord Jesus Christ. In this meal God offers and gives to each who receive His Son s body and blood forgiveness of sins, strength for

3 a holy life, eternal life, and fellowship. Our Lord invites to His table all who trust and believe His Words, are repentant, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as He forgives and loves us. Because Holy Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this altar, we ask that those who have not been instructed, have doubts, or hold a confession differing from this congregation and are not members of a congregation that belongs to the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the Lord s Supper to first speak with the Pastor or Elder. Thank you. Order of Worship: Creative Worship As We Gather: Near the close of Deuteronomy, there is an account of how Moses gave directions to Joshua entrusting to him the leadership of the people of Israel. Moses encouraged his successor with these words: Be strong and courageous. It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; He will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed. As we conclude this calendar year and look toward the future and a new year, we can be confident that wherever we are going, not only is the Lord going before us, but He is also for us as we go. P: Jesus Christ is the light of the world, C: the light no darkness can overcome. P: Stay with us, Lord, for it is evening, C: and the day is almost over. P: Let Your light scatter the darkness C: and illumine Your Church. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION P: It s a new year. The old has gone; the new has come. Or has it? We tend to drag all our old worries and fears and problems into the new year with us. And then we look ahead and wonder and perhaps even fear what the new year will bring, whether joy or sorrow, blessing or trouble, sickness or health. The beginning of a new year can be exciting and fresh. It can also be daunting and depressing as we realize the things we should have said, should have accomplished, or on the other hand, those things we should not have said or done.

6 The new year gives us a time for pause and reflection. A good way for us to reflect is to use God s own Word as a mirror and guide, to show us what needs to be forgiven from this past year and what needs to be done in the year to come. Tonight we use the Ten Commandments to guide our reflecting and repenting. P: What is the First Commandment? C: You shall have no other gods. P: What does this mean? C: We should fear, love, and trust in God above all things. (Pause for silent reflection.) P: What is the Second Commandment? C: You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. P: What does this mean? C: We should fear and love God so that we do not curse, swear, use satanic arts, lie, or deceive by His name, but call upon it in every trouble, pray, praise, and give thanks. (Pause for silent reflection.) P: What is the Third Commandment? C: Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. P: What does this mean? C: We should fear and love God so that we do not despise preaching and His Word, but hold it sacred and gladly hear and learn it. (Pause for silent reflection.)

7 P: What is the Fourth Commandment? C: Honor your father and your mother. P: What does this mean? C: We should fear and love God so that we do not despise or anger our parents and other authorities, but honor them, serve and obey them, love and cherish them. (Pause for silent reflection.) P: What is the Fifth Commandment? C: You shall not murder. P: What does this mean? C: We should fear and love God so that we do not hurt or harm our neighbor in his body, but help and support him in every physical need. (Pause for silent reflection.) P: What is the Sixth Commandment? C: You shall not commit adultery. P: What does this mean? C: We should fear and love God so that we lead a sexually pure and decent life in what we say and do, and husband and wife love and honor each other. (Pause for silent reflection.) P: What is the Seventh Commandment? C: You shall not steal. P: What does this mean? C: We should fear and love God so that we do not take our neighbor s money or possessions, or get them in any dishonest way, but help him to improve and protect his possessions and income. (Pause for silent reflection.)

8 P: What is the Eighth Commandment? C: You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. P: What does this mean? C: We should fear and love God so that we do not tell lies about our neighbor, betray him, slander him, or hurt his reputation, but defend him, speak well of him, and explain everything in the kindest way. (Pause for silent reflection.) P: What is the Ninth Commandment? C: You shall not covet your neighbor s house. P: What does this mean? C: We should fear and love God so that we do not scheme to get our neighbor s inheritance or house, or get it in a way which only appears right, but help and be of service to him in keeping it. (Pause for silent reflection.) P: What is the Tenth Commandment? C: You shall not covet your neighbor s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. P: What does this mean? C: We should fear and love God so that we do not entice or force away our neighbor s wife, workers, or animals, or turn them against him, but urge them to stay and do their duty. (Pause for silent reflection.)

9 P: When we use these Ten Commandments and their explanations to reflect on our past year and look ahead to the next, we find that we are truly sinful and that we need to confess these sins to God, our heavenly Father. O almighty God, merciful Father, C: I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. P: Upon this, your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray. Eternal God, we commit to Your mercy and forgiveness the year now ending and commend to Your blessing and love the times yet to come. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting You are God. C: You return man to dust and say, Return, O children of man! EPISTLE READING Ephesians 5:6-21 L: A reading from Ephesians. 6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not associate with them; 8 for at one time you were darkness, but now

Walk as children of light 9 (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), 10 and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. 13 But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, 14 for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says, Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you. 15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart, 20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ. Ephesians 5:15-20 APOSTLES CREED P: As the old year comes to its close and the new year of God s grace begins, we speak together words of faith in our God Father, Son and Holy Spirit. C: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 17 THE WORDS OF OUR LORD P: Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: Take, eat; this is My body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me. In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins.
