The Ninth and Tenth Commandments
Review First Commandment: You shall have no other gods. What does this mean? We should fear, love, and trust in God above all things. 2
Review Second Commandment: You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not curse, swear, use satanic arts, lie, or deceive by His name, but call upon it in every trouble, pray, praise, and give thanks. 3
Review Third Commandment: Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not despise preaching and His Word, but hold it sacred and gladly hear and learn it. 4
Review Fourth Commandment: Honor your father and your mother. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not despise or anger our parents and other authorities, but honor them, serve and obey them, love and cherish them. 5
Review The Fifth Commandment: You shall not murder. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not hurt or harm our neighbor in his body, but help and support him in every physical need. 6
Review Sixth Commandment You shall not commit adultery. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we lead a sexually pure and decent life in what we say and do, and husband and wife should love and honor each other. 7
Review Seventh Commandment You Shall not steal. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not take our neighbor s money or possessions, or get them in any dishonest way, but help him to improve and protect his possessions and income.
Review Eighth Commandment You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not tell lies about our neighbor, betray him, slander him, or hurt his reputation, but defend him, speak well of him, and explain everything in the kindest way. 9
Review Ninth Commandment You shall not covet your neighbor s house. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not scheme to get our neighbor s inheritance or house, or get it in a way which only appears to be right, but help and be of service to him in keeping it.
Review Tenth Commandment You shall not covet your neighbor s wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. What does this mean? We should fear and love God so that we do not entice or force away our neighbor s wife, workers, or animals, or turn them against him, but urge them to stay and do their duty.

Neighbor s Wife 4 Haven t you read, he replied, that at the beginning the Creator made them male and female, 5 and said, For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.
Catechism Questions and What is coveting? Answers Coveting is having a sinful desire for anyone or anything that belongs to our neighbor. Coveting is another way we show a lack of trust in God.
Covet The key word in these commandments is covet. To covet means to sinfully desire, to wish to have as your own, to wrongfully hope for and long for with all your heart for something that belongs to someone else. Coveting is a sin and a sign of discontent. That which you covet can become an idol. Can you think of anything you resist coveting?
Things Many Covet
Things Many Covet
So Much to Covet, So Little Time
Other Things to Covet Success Beauty Popularity Abilities (athletic, musical, academic, etc )
Not a New Thing
Not a New Thing
Catechism Questions and Answers What coveting does God forbid in the Ninth Commandment? God forbids every sinful desire to get our neighbor s possessions openly or by trickery. What does God require of us in the Ninth commandment? We should be content with what God has given us and assist our neighbor in keeping what God has given that person.
Catechism Questions and Answers What coveting does God forbid in the Tenth Commandment? God forbids every sinful desire to take from our neighbor that person s spouse or workers. What does God require of us in the Tenth Commandment? We should be content with the helpers God has given us and encourage our neighbor s helpers to be faithful to our neighbor.
Good Things to Covet To covet spiritual blessings is right and good. To desire God s peace or forgiveness or hope is perfectly fine. St. Paul once wrote to the Christians at Corinth, Eagerly desire the greater gifts (1 Corinthians 12:31). God wants to give His blessings to us.
Catechism Questions and Answers What does God particularly impress upon us in the last two commandments? In God s sight evil desire, coveting, is indeed sin and deserves condemnation. God wants us to love Him and to have holy desires.
The Close of the Commandments What does God say about all these commandments? He says, I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love Me and keep My commandments.
What does this mean? The Close of the Commandments God threatens to punish all who break these commandments. Therefore, we should fear His wrath and not do anything against them. But He promises grace and every blessing to all who keep these commandments. Therefore, we should also love and trust in Him and gladly do what He commands.
