1 The Grapevine February 2017 Yadkinville United Methodist Church From our Pastor: It sounded like church and felt like church. Except we didn t sing. We prayed. We heard testimonies. We heard from a single mother of two young boys how their lives had been enriched through a caring and generous organization, and how they have received material support that had transformed their lives. She made it clear to us that this love and support came directly from God through caring people. We heard form a cancer survivor who has become an evangelist of sorts for living strong and supporting others experiencing similar challenges. Banners proclaimed a mission of youth development, healthy living, and helping people reach their God-given potential. At the end of the fellowship breakfast, we were given the opportunity to pledge our financial support, not for a facility or a set of programs, but for the enrichment of people s lives. People were visibly moved. Several of us looked at each other and declared, We ve just been to church! Only it was a fundraising breakfast for the Yadkin YMCA, held in our YUMC Family Life Center. The focus was on the why of the various community outreach and lifesupport initiatives of the YMCA and its members and friends. The why tangible love for county residents, deep commitment to children, and tenacious love of neighbor was clear. It was like church. It put the C in YMCA. There are many worthy, community serving organizations in our county, and they all need funds to support and expand their offerings and to help more people. There is surely some duplication of effort. Sometimes, it feels like we, the church, are just one more community-serving, fund-raising organization. But, our core identity is not defined as a non-profit community service organization, one among many. Those are good things to be, with good things to do. But our core identity is defined by being the church. We are Christ s body in the world, in Yadkin County. Our purpose, our why is defined by him, like the C in YMCA. When we serve, we are serving Jesus himself. When we serve, we are serving as Jesus himself. We are a faith-community, disciples of Jesus Christ, commissioned to build one another up in Christ, to grow in discipleship, to make disciples, and to serve others as Jesus. He is the why and the how of our serving. So, we serve our community because we worship God and serve Jesus as his disciples through the power of the Holy Spirit. As we are the church together, we step out in ministry to others. I m so glad we are a true community church. Let s continue to ask, What is our distinctive role as the Church in our community? Blessed to be your pastor, Chris 1

3 Church Council: Thank you to all those who came out on Saturday morning January 21st to meet for our first gathering of the YUMC Ministry Leadership Conference. This group will be meeting quarterly with the next meeting planned for April. We are very excited about becoming The Church in our community and reconnecting ourselves to Jesus by becoming more accountable to him for how we serve him at Yadkinville UMC and in the world. If the discussion centers around what Jesus would do then his followers cannot say NO! Our next Church Council meeting will be Tuesday, March 14th at 7pm. If you receive an reminder we hope you will plan to attend. We will be sharing with each other our excitement for the future. Marty Driver, Chairperson Trustees: The Trustees met on January 21st and 23 rd. Virgil Dodson was elected as chairperson, Steve Brown as vice-chair and Betty Williams as secretary for Plans are in the works to do some pressure washing, mulch for the playground and shrubs, sound in the nursery from the FLC, new tires for the van and what to do with the old Christmas tree that was used in the Sanctuary. We need help in controlling water costs. Some months we have very high water bills, so if you will check to make sure commodes do not continue to run. Insurance costs have increased almost 50% from 2 years ago, so we will do some competitive shopping. Help is needed to make sure the thermostats are set correctly. If you make a change for any event, please set it back. And if you are not sure how to do this, please ask someone who does. Virgil Dodson, Chairperson Youth: On Sunday, February 5, 2017, the Jr. Youth will take up a collection for the Souper Bowl of Hunger after both services. 4 United Methodist Women: The United Methodist Women began the New Year with the quarterly Gathering, where all Circles meet together. The program, led by Valerie Prim, was the annual Call to Prayer and Self-Denial. Each member is encouraged to give sacrificially, perhaps from skipping dinner out and set aside an equal amount spent or an hour of time volunteering and give the amount of one hour wage. The 2017 offering will fund programs that support women and children's health. "This has been at the heart of United Methodist Women since it was founded in the 1800s. They chose to build hospitals and clinics, train women and girls to serve as doctors and nurses and to send missionaries to initate the work. Today, we continue to support the health and family needs around the globe. Maternal and child mortality remains a significant global challenge. This is a mission priority for "(from Program Book Call to Community) One hundred percent of the offering will go directly to programs and advocacy to benefit women and children. The offering will be collected at the February Circle meetings or may be given to Mildred Carter, Treasurer. Can also go to ww.unitedmethodistwomen.org to give. During the fellowship time, we celebrated the birthdays of two very special, dedicated members, Gerri Reynolds and Sharon McGrath. The Tuesday Night Circle provided a festive table of refreshments. Once again, as thousands will be preparing to attend the Super Bowl on February 5, we are reminded of the "human trafficking" that takes place in large events such as this. Many will be arriving by force, fraud, or coercion--they willl not be there on their own free will but as victims of human trafficking. UMW has asked members to raise awareness of human trafficking everywhere and will be actively present at the Super Bowl. Please be in prayer for those involved. Recent reports stated that over two million children and youth are kidnapped and sold for human trafficking worldwide each year. The next Gathering will be a Celebration of Membership as well as encouraging all women, neighbors, friends and any woman, any age to share the fun! Maxine (Cooky) Weatherman, Coordinator Membership Nurture and Outreach will provide details in the March Newsletter. If you are not a member we welcome you to join. The only requirement is to choose to belong and support the UMW Purpose. Church membership is not required. All are welcome!
