2 The SUN and SON shines!! I love the changing of seasons, especially from winter to spring. I don t know about you, but my attitude and spirit are so encouraged and edified by the sun. I feel more positive and more energetic and happy. The sun has this effect on many! But how about the SON? I also love that the Easter season is nestled right in the midst of spring. The Son of God at Easter reminds us that darkness, sin and death have no victory over us. We are Easter people, and we carry HOPE because of what the SON has done for us. And no one can take our hope away! God is in the business of giving us new life each day. Psalm 98:1 Sing a new song to the Lord, for he has done marvelous things! Lamentations 3:23-24 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness therefore I will hope in Him. A common element in our Easter Sunday readings is love and unity. Jesus knew that even the early church would deal with natural conflict and issues that might divide. I ve been reading up on some of Trinity s history which I find fascinating, because Trinity was shaped by a split in our predecessor body, and then brought back together in a merger of love. Many of us might not know that. Our earliest church body in Hayfield was called Cedar Creek (Lutheran) Church, forming in Like many other Norwegian Lutheran Synod churches back then, it split in two in 1890 due in large part to the divisive issue of Predestination (how one gets to heaven your choice or God s choice it gets deep and complicated very quickly!). The group that believed heavily in Predestination, that is, God fore-ordains your salvation, left to form their own church, called the Synod Church (or South Church), keeping allegiance with the Norwegian Synod. Those who stayed switched allegiance from the Norwegian Synod and to the United Lutheran Church. It s view of Predestination was that each Christian has their own unique choice to be saved. The split evidently wasn t as bitter as the split that happened out at East St. Olaf. But the Spirit works in mysterious ways! Because from these divisions came an Easter message: Unity for Christ s sake. South Church and United Church 2 came back together in 1922, laying a cornerstone in the building of our present structure, Trinity Lutheran Church. Worship began together here in May of 1923, exactly 95 years ago. It s amazing to think how God works his unifying power through Christ. It s exactly what Jesus preached before he was crucified that the church would be one as the He and Father are one (John 17). Moving on I m excited to have a children s choir, Watoto, here from Uganda, East Africa. They, and a few adults, will be singing and dancing in our sanctuary on Thursday night, May 7 th at 7pm. Don t miss this concert/worship experience! Spread the word and bring your neighbors. A free-will offering will be received. See the full page ad in this newsletter. I d like you to consider hosting some of the kids and adults from this choir overnight. Please let me know. I m so thankful for continuing education funds that Trinity offers me each year to enhance my ministry through retreats, conferences and other learning opportunities. I ve saved funds from last year and this year to take a personal retreat to Israel. My dear friend, Brett, and I will be hiking 40 miles from Nazareth to Capernaum, on the Sea of Galilee. This, of course, is not the typical touristy thing to do in Israel, but it s right up my alley! I love to explore and discover a country through walking it s land. Each night we ll be staying with a local family at a B&B, and one night in a Jewish Kibbutz (community of farmers). I ll spend my evenings visiting with people we meet on this trail (called The Jesus Trail) and reading the Bible (on location!). It will be inspiring to walk the route Jesus would have walked in his ministry on earth. Most of the people we ll meet will be Arab Christians who populate this part of Israel. I ll be traveling from May 15 May 24. God s Easter Peace, Pastor Paul Beginning on Sunday, May 27 th, will go to one service time: 9:00am. This will go through Sunday, Sept. 3 rd. During the summer months we love it when people volunteer to sing or read the lessons. Please contact Brenna in the office if you can help out. Please consider signing up with the Simply Giving automated giving program if you plan to be away from church a lot this summer. This enables you to give regularly even if you are not in church.

7 WATOTO CHILDREN S CHOIR TRAVELS FROM AFRICA TO HAYFIELD!! The Watoto Children s Choir, a group of 18 orphans from Uganda, will continue its six-month U.S. tour right here at Trinity Lutheran on Thursday, June 7 th at 7pm!! They are featuring a brand new concert, Signs & Wonders. The concert will feature worship songs that share the stories of the children and the joy that they have because of God s love. The children will share stories of how their lives have been changed and how they have been called into a life of purpose to transform their communities. All performances are free and open to the public. Since 1994, Watoto Children s Choirs have traveled the world sharing the plight of Africa s orphaned children. Each child in the choir has suffered the loss of one or both of their parents but they have been rescued and now live in a Watoto village. Watoto is a holistic child-care solution initiated to serve the dire needs of the people of Africa. Abandoned at a hospital in Kampala, Esther Kahangi was rescued by Watoto as a premature baby and spent her first weeks in critical care. Now, she is a healthy, joyful 8-year-old who is currently touring with the choir. I am excited to be a part of Signs & Wonders, said Esther. I know that I am a wonder because I am chosen by God as His child. What an extraordinary experience it is to see the Watoto Children s Choir, said Brian Houston, Senior Pastor of Hillsong Church. It lights up the place to see these beautiful kids, and when you hear their stories and learn about where they have come from, you can t help but think of all God has done. About the Watoto Children s Choir Since 1994, the Watoto Children s Choirs have toured the world annually as advocates for the 18 million African children currently orphaned by AIDS. The experience of travelling on a choir helps the children to develop confidence and boldness, as well as broadening their worldview. The choirs have performed before presidents and royalty in the White House, Buckingham Palace, the United Nations and many other national parliaments. The choir has also performed at the Queen s Diamond Jubilee Pageant in the UK and is featured on Chris Tomlin s album, Hello, Love. About Watoto Child Care Ministry In 1994, Watoto Church founded Watoto Child Care Ministry, Inc., an international holistic care program that was initiated as a response to the overwhelming number of orphaned and vulnerable children and women in Uganda. It is positioned to rescue an individual, raise each one as a leader in their chosen sphere of life so that they in turn will rebuild their nation. The model involves physical care, medical intervention including HIV/AIDS treatment, education - formal and vocational, counseling and emotional well-being as well as moral and spiritual discipleship. 7
