1 VBS 2015 Children of God Vaca on Bible School will be held June 8-12 from 9:00-11:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church. Our theme is "Children of God". We will hear and explore Bible stories through drama, music, cra s, and recrea on. Our mission project will support Opera on Christmas Child. Feel free to tell friends about VBS at FPC. All are welcome! It was enjoyed and appreciated by all! Mission Trip & Bake Sale Report THE SENIOR HIGH MISSION TRIP (WEEK OF HOPE) is looking great! Thanks be to God for generous hearts and wonderful support. Between Senior High par cipa on fees, the church workday, and the Mother's Day bake sale, we now have a total of $2, all of which is available to be matched! Please be in prayer for the mission trip par cipants as we prepare: Naomi Brehm, Alice Tsui, Carlie Boelk, Bobby & Tim McCaw, Jonah & Elias Brehm, Anne e Boelk, Steve Foxen, and Kat Achtemeier. 2 In the Life of the Church MAY 9TH AT FIRST PRES.AND BEYOND! Thank you to EVERYONE who showed up to give me and energy to the First Pres Workday on Saturday, May 9th! In addi on to other volunteers, Senior High Youth planning to go on the First Pres Mission Trip s Week of Hope (July 12-17) turned out to labor in order to earn more financial support for the mission trip. Steve Foxen and Tim McCaw worked at the home of Joanne & Tom Jack. Naomi, Jonah, and Elias Brehm worked at the home of Rachel & Lyle Vander Broek Anne*e & Carlie Boelk, Sam & Lupe Morales, Beth McCaw, Alex Jack, Chris Daniels, Beth Foxen, Kat Achtemeier, and Cherie & Harold Daniels worked at First Pres. Alex Jack also worked at the home of Joel Samuels. It was a wonderful morning of good spirits, hard work, and wonderful fellowship! Did You Know that Kelly Gregory former member and candidate for the ministry from First Presbyterian Church, has sent us a newsy card with an update on both Liam and Ian...and the wonderful news that she will be married in Sept. See the Coffee Hour Room bulle n board!... that our high school graduates have big plans for next year? Micah Dillman will be a*ending the School of the Art Ins tute of Chicago; Bobby McCaw will be heading to Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI and Brandon Prine will be a*ending Wartburg College in Waverly, IA.... that Jill Klinebriel will be playing the part of Sally Boyles in The Grand Opera House s summer presenta on of Caberet? It will be directed by Joe Klinebriel and the Musical Director is Kristen Eby. Don t forget to get your ckets! The show is at the end of July.

5 Mission/Stewardship & Chris an Educa on A Step in Faith: A Chinese Worshipping Community Some mes God whispers and some mes he shouts. The Mission Commi ee heard God shout in an opportunity for First Presbyterian Church to partner in mission work right in our own backyard! Seeking to heed a growing sense of call God was placing on their hearts, Tina Lee and her husband, Moses Wu, both graduates of UDTS, came to the Mission Commi ee to share their vision for a Chinese ministry right here in Dubuque. A li le background: Several years ago when Tina and Moses first arrived in Dubuque from Taiwan their goal was to get Moses' degree from the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary. A erwards they returned to Taiwan where Moses pastored a church. The longer they worked together, the more Moses encouraged Tina to return to UDTS to pursue an advanced ministry degree. This meant moving their three children back to Dubuque. You might not think of Dubuque as having a need for a Chinesespeaking ministry, but, says Tina, "there are around 60 people at least who have no church home. The closest Chinese-speaking churches are in Iowa City and Madison." Tina admits she did not set out to start anything, but found her family living in University housing where UD's Chinese cohorts also reside. She and Moses regularly offered the students hospitality and help with the culture. Then she was asked by a local church to interpret a Bible study for some Chinese women. At that point Tina decided to offer a full Bible study in Chinese. Where we are now: In mid-april, when Tina and Moses met with the First Pres Mission Commi ee, they were accompanied by Dean Bradley Longfield and Pastor to Students Beth McCaw, both of whom have come to believe strongly in the vision and call of this mission endeavor. Helping validate that sense of call, Tina (in March of this year), applied for and received a small 1001 Worshipping Communi es grant given by the PC(USA). These grants are awarded to encourage new worshipping community growth in the denomina on. It is possible to re-apply for these grants over the coming years, and with each year the financial award grows. In need of further support for this coming year, however, Tina and Moses turned to John Knox Presbytery, Westminster Presbyterian Church, the University of Dubuque, their home church and family in Taiwan, and First Presbyterian Church. Among these many ins tu ons a wonderful partnership is beginning to take shape as support prayerful and financial grows. The Mission commi ee is very excited about this ministry opportunity for the First Pres community of faith, and with the approval of Session voted $3000 of support to the Chinese Worshipping Community of Dubuque for their first year. Normally this $3000 would support a summer SPM student at FPC. With no summer applicants, however, this seemed a perfect match for our desire to be ac ve in ministry here in Dubuque. We hope to provide regular updates on Tina and Moses ministry. Their family is ac ve at Westminster Presbyterian Church, but their children: Samuel, Joshua, and Grace, are no strangers to our FPY and VBS programs. Please join us in prayer for Tina and Moses and their family, the lives they will touch, and that God might abundantly bless this new ministry. 6 Food for the First June The Dubuque Food Pantry needs your help. All non-perishables are welcome especially macaroni & cheese, tuna and other canned meat, soup, peanut butter & jelly, cereal, rice, pasta, boxed potatoes, #3 baby food, diapers (size 3-5), and baby wipes. Please place your donations to Food for the First in the basket in the Narthex. Your generous donations assist those in need in our neighborhood and help to make their lives a little brighter. Thank You! Mission Committee Supplies for the Second While serving at the Domestic Violence Center we learned how we can help by providing supplies that are always needed: toilet paper, paper towels, boxes of tissues, toilet bowl cleaner, cleaning products like Windex, laundry detergent, diapers. This month s major need is: toilet paper Please bring your Supplies for the Second to the church and place them under the table in the narthex the second Sunday of each month.
