2 Chris%an Educa%on A Glimpse at our Sunday School Program Over the last few weeks, the 1st-3rd grade class studied the travels of the disciples found in Acts. The children really enjoy finding different passages in their Bibles, discovering new places on our wall map, doing cra+s related to the lessons, and being together. We will be ending the year with a few of the parables Jesus used to teach us how to live according to God's word. This picture in the children s worship center shows some of the different ways the children respond to God s stories which include: drawing, pain ng, using story materials to reenact God s stories, using play dough, making a puzzle about one of the stories. During Lent, the 4th-8th grade Sunday School class looked up the Messianic prophesies foretold in the Old Testament and fulfilled in the New Testament. We do memory work and have spent a good por on of the year wri ng in a journal about the lessons found in each book of the Bible. Using the Bible as a guide, the High School class has spent the year discussing current events and challenges that face us as Chris ans and ci zens. It s been a great year!

3 Chris%an Educa%on MIXED UP BOWLING FUN with the Senior Highs That was the name of the game at Cherry Lanes on Sunday, April 27th. Folks were invited to bring a friend along, and so Ian Searles, Jack Dillman, Timmy & Bobby McCaw, Brianna Lewis, Brandon Prine, Ethan, Bryan, & Sara Blair, and Pastor Kat gathered to fling a few bowling balls down the lanes. Ever tried to bowl through your partner s legs? (SCARY for the splayed-leg person!) What about le--handed bowling? Or bowling child-style? We did it all and had a blast! Thank you to Sara and Bryan Blair for making arrangements Join us to learn how God calls us! July 7 11, 2014 Celebra*ng in Worship July 13, News You Need to Keep Your Directory Up-to-Date! 4 Easter Sunrise and the Summer Ahead Easter Sunrise came early and First Pres was there to greet it! Over 130 people, including at least 43 from First Presbyterian Church, gathered in the River Room of the Grand River Center at 6AM on Sunday, April 20 to worship with sisters and brothers of First Bap*st and GracePoint Churches and the University of Dubuque Community. We were grateful for all the musicians, especially Kristen and Amanda Eby, who shared their musical gi-s as part of our worship and praise. The Lord is risen! He is risen indeed! Meet Sara Su)er our Summer SPM I am excited for the opportunity to be in the Supervised Prac*ce of Ministry program this summer at First Presbyterian Church. My name is Sara SuHer and I am just wrapping up my first year at University of Dubuque Theological Seminary. What a joy it's been to take *me to study Scripture, theology, and church history! That said, I have missed serving a church, especially interac*ng with youth. I came to seminary with a background of children and youth ministry, most recently as the Director of Chris*an Educa*on in Cherokee, Iowa. I have been in youth ministry since 2002, working at the Presbyterian Camp on Okoboji prior to serving on the staff of two different churches. I grew up in northwest Iowa and ahended Northwestern College in Orange City so I'm s*ll gelng used to the east side of the state. My husband Steve and I moved to Dubuque last August so that I could pursue a Master of Divinity. Steve grew up in Wisconsin so some*mes we drive across the river just so he can breathe the air of his home state. Steve currently works for Dupaco in their call center. He enjoys playing his guitar and we are both avid readers. While we don't have children of our own yet, our family is rounded out with our beloved cats Chloe and Haiku. I'm eager to see what this summer has in store for us as I get to know the church by par*cipa*ng in the life of your congrega*on. Along with this internship, I'm looking forward to represen*ng UDTS at General Assembly this June as a Theological Student Advisory Delegate. I'm praying for a summer rich with learning and laughter. I look forward to mee*ng each of you and worshiping together.

5 Mission/Stewardship One Great Hour of Sharing How are OGHS gi s used by the PC(USA) offering? 36% - Presbyterian Hunger Program 32% - Presbyterian Disaster Assistance 32% - Self Development of People REJOICE & GIVE THANKS! Congrega onal support came to $1900. With a boost from the Mission/Stewardship Com. First Pres will give a record $2000 to support all the wonderful programs helped by OGHS! FIRST PRES CLOSED OUT APRIL WITH A GIFT! FPC hosted lunch & a hymn sing for the UDTS Presbyterian students, staff, and faculty. Thank you to Queen Bee Rachel Vander Broek, & worker bees: Jamie Dillman, Victoria Slemmons, Linda Longfield, and VeNita Fawce for preparing and serving a bodacious meal. Thank you to the inimitable Rev. Dr. Henry Fawce for leading our upli ing hymn-sing! Mail bag Thank yous in brief! (for complete notes & le ers see the Coffee Room bulle n board) Dear First Pres Folks, Thank you for your Second Sunday remembrance of our needs! Our ladies were delighted beyond words to have all occasion cards now on hand. I ve been told this is be er than Hallmark! It s making available these li le things that restore dignity and beauty into lives where these had been robbed! Gratefully on behalf of all those we serve, Sister Charla and staff at New Beginnings Shelter - My Dear Church Family, I cannot thank you enough for your generous contribu on toward my college New Orleans Mission trip. Thanks to you all, I was able to raise even more than I needed and was then able to donate excess money to the mission there You have been so invaluable in my walk of faith, FPC church. Thank you for everything you do. With love, Shannon Black To Session, members & friends at FPC, Thank you for this scholarship! While I am grateful for your generous gi, it must be said that it means much more to me than the financial help it brings; it is sacramental as it nurtures the spiritual es of love within and sustains the sensible work of study without. In your midst (during UDTS distance intensives) I am always blessed by the Word and welcome. I thank God and you, always. In Christ, Carol E. Bayma (FPC partners with UDTS in offering essen al scholarship aid. Carol was chosen to be this year s recipient of the First Presbyterian Church Scholarship for Distance MDIV.)

6 Congrega%onal Life The First Pres Easter Egg Hunt was Egg-ci2ng! Thank you to Tracy Wildermuth for all the planning and prepara*on for the Easter Egg Hunt. Tracy (with help from son, Aaron, and husband, Bob) made sure the eggs were stuffed and hidden, cra-s and snacks were purchased, and the cra- and snack tables were set up. On Saturday, April 19, Caitlin Daniels, Lyfe Fountain, and Lyfe s friend were Tracy s helpers from the hunt through clean up. Thirty-five grateful adults and children (including Nathaniel, Andrew, & Edmund Sheppard, Gwendoline, Imogen, & Gabriel Hoch, Syann Benckhuysen, Isaiah, Emma, & Elizabeth Hill, Nik kiva & Wizdom Fountain, Mirah Samuels, Aspen Herbst, and Aggie Herbst) took part in an egg-ci*ng *me! Thank you Tracy! FPC Women Fellowship Together The Women's Bible/Prayer Group meets weekly from September through mid-may. All women are invited, and the group has varied in size from 9 to 3 or 4 ahenders. They meet at 10 a.m. on Thursdays in an upper room above the church office. It is an informal group where laughter mingles with serious sharing. They are currently studying scriptures that will be used on the following Sunday, and have enjoyed summing them up by crea*ng sermon *tles.
