From skits to games, talks to prayer, sports to small groups, all culminating with mass this will be one weekend to energize and revitalize their faith! The purpose of the youth conference is twofold: first, to evangelize. The goal is to offer a weekend that invites and excites the young people into a deeper discipleship of Jesus Christ. Everything they do points to Jesus, from the music to the workshops and culminating with the liturgy. Second, they offer the young people an opportunity to see a larger church community with teenagers from across the diocese. There is great value in seeing and participating in big church so that the young church can grow in fellowship together. San Juan Mission is a Mission of St. Madeleine Catholic Parish Rev. 9 Meditations on Mercy: January 2016 For each month of the Jubilee of Mercy, we offer reflections based on scripture passages that Pope Francis uses in his Bull Misericordiae Vultus (MV). By beginning with a scripture passage and a reference to paragraphs in Misericordiae Vultus, each reflection offers a way to more deeply embrace the call to embody mercy that is asked of every Christian. These reflections can be done on your own, with your family, or with small groups in your parish. GATHERING (10 minutes) Pray: Prayer of Pope Francis for the Jubilee of Mercy ( content/gdm/en/giubileo/bolla.html) Discuss: Outside of our group activity, how did you see the mercy of God working in your life over the past few weeks? JANUARY 2016 Mi 7:18-20; MV, no. 17 Who is a God like you, who removes guilt / and pardons sin for the remnant of his inheritance; / Who does not persist in anger forever, / but instead delights in mercy, / And will again have compassion on us, / treading underfoot our iniquities? / You will cast into the depths of the sea all our sins; / You will show faithfulness to Jacob, / and loyalty to Abraham, / As you have sworn to our ancestors / from days of old. Happy New Year! January is often a month of new beginnings and new resolutions. In this Jubilee Year, we are asked to make acts of mercy a priority in our lives and to live out the compassionate love of God. In this passage from Micah, we are reminded of God s eternal promise to us. Throughout the Old Testament, we read stories of God s covenant that he made with his chosen individuals (through Noah, Abraham, and Moses). This covenant is more than a promise; it is also a relationship between God and his people. This relationship continues with the New Covenant, which is made through the life, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus, and with our participation in the New Covenant through the sacraments of the Church. God, who is ever faithful, will never break his covenant with us. Even if we fail or fall away, God still yearns for our return. Pope Francis highlights verses as an illustration of God s compassion and mercy toward us. No person and no action can compare to the generous mercy and compassion that God has for us. Even though we may break our part of the covenant relationship, God pardons our sins because of his great love. God delights in mercy God s merciful attitude is not a chore or a bother for God. Rather, pardoning sins and drawing people back into a relationship brings joy to God. As we make our annual resolutions, don t forget to include one about acting as God acts, with love and compassion to everyone we encounter. If you have trouble keeping this resolution, just remember that God will always keep his resolutions! REFLECTION QUESTIONS 1. After reading about God s covenant with us and God s enduring love and compassion, what are some things we can do to strengthen
10 Mercy in M otion our relationship with God? Why is it important for us to respond to God s covenant of love and mercy with our own actions of love and mercy? 2. What is one realistic New Year s resolution you can make this year that will help you adopt the attitude of mercy? What are some things you can do that could help you stay on track in keeping this resolution throughout the year? 11 The Domestic Church The Church of the Home The Catholic family as a domestic church is the fundamental community or cell of the parish, the diocese, and the universal Church. Christ has called all family members to union with God through Baptism and the other Sacraments and to share in the mission of the whole Church. Family members carry out the Church s mission by fostering mutual love in the home and, through that love, by building up the community of the Church and society. The Christian home is the place where children receive the first proclamation of the faith. For this reason the family home is rightly called the domestic church, a community of grace and prayer, a school of human virtues and of Christian charity. (CCC, no. 1666) The Christian family forms an environment within which faith is professed and witnessed. When family members pray together, engage in lifelong learning, forgive one another, serve each other, welcome others, affirm and celebrate life, and bring justice and mercy to the community, they help each other live the faith and grow in faith. Some families may not understand themselves as a domestic church. Perhaps they consider their family too broken to be used for the Lord s purposes. They need to remember that a family is holy not because it is perfect, but because God s grace is at work in it. What is a family? A man and a woman united in marriage, together with their children, form a family (CCC, no. 2202). A family as defined in the Cate chism may be found in a considerable portion of the households in our nation. Other familial arrangements have developed, such as single-parent families, blended families, and families in which adult children care for their parents as well as their own children. All families are beset with many challenges. They deserve compassion and the hope that they can be faithful to Christ s way of love. The Christian family is called to be a community of faith, hope, and love in an environment of prayer. Aided by a number of other virtues, such as prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance, the family that practices them begins to actualize its spiritual calling as a domestic church. When a family becomes a school of virtue and a community of love, it is an image of the loving communion of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It is then an icon of the Trinity.
