1 THE SANCTUS BELL St. Bride s Episcopal Church Dear St. Bridians: Some more items from your Senior Warden: It is standard practice for a waiter to ask patrons of a restaurant, Table for how many? We, in the Sandwich Ministry, prepare sandwiches for people for the Salter Street Mission. Table for how many? Recently Steve Anderson and I had the pleasure of serving at Christ s open-air table as the rain came down and the water washed around us! Numbers were diminished! But the thankfulness was not! Thank you St. Bride s were the words from one of the organizers for the Catholic Worker. I pass this along to you because our Parish fulfills one of the Catholic works of mercy by supporting the Salter Street Mission. How thankful we are to be a part of Christ s mission to feed the hungry. On September 15th our parish and its grounds will be the setting for RIVERfest. This is an event to focus the attention of our neighbors on the needs of our environment and the thrust to preserve and care for it. The Elizabeth River has long been a tributary that supplies life-giving food, recreation, and transportation for humans. We expect that many in our neighborhood will come for RIVERfest and also visit our building and learn more about our way of life in Christ. We look forward to hosting this event. There will be booths setup, food available, police and fire protection, and exhibits to help the neighborhood know more and to foster awareness. One item already in place through the Elizabeth River Project is the animal waste station that is now in place beside the lake and the parking lot. Many thanks and kudos to David and Lynn Greenfield who made the arrangement, installed the station and are maintaining it. Pollution is something that can be managed well. We are glad to do our part! Please be faithful in attendance and with your pledges as we head into back-to-school time in September. We are doing well financially. Your Vestry monitors each meeting the in and out flows of funds. We are very thankful for Bob Byles, our Treasurer, and his financial expertise. Under the Mercies of Christ, Still listening, Kirke RIVERfest will be occurring at St. Bride s on September 15th. Sponsored by The Elizabeth River Project, festivities will include a science dome, aquariums, a native plant sale, live music and food. We are expecting about 1000 guests and we will have the church open for tours. There will be lots of kids activities and freebies! David has been co-ordinating with The Elizabeth river project. Come and experience the fun.

2 HAPPENING AT ST. BRIDE S Mandie and I would like to thank you, for welcoming us into your wonderful community again this summer. Our eight days in Virginia Beach were extremely enjoyable, with the time of prayer, worship, and fellowship punctuated by visits to the Beach, Aquarium and Naval Museum, to name a few places. Reflecting on our visit as we prepare to leave the USA, on the feast of the Queenship of Mary, I am reminded of the Kingdom of Heaven and Christ s call that we should be all be Builders and faithful Stewards of it. You will remain in our prayers as you continue to meditate on your future and how you may best serve Our Lord Jesus Christ in continuing to Build the Kingdom in Chesapeake and act as faithful Stewards of the gifts you have all received. 3 S A N D W I C H M I N I S T R Y Our sandwich ministry will be delivering sandwiches on Saturday, September 15th. Sandwiches can be dropped off in the church kitchen on Friday, September 14th. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are always a great hit! Dear Friends, As I write this it is August and that means summer is coming to an end. It sure has been a hot and steamy summer. I hope you have all had a pleasant summer and are well rested and ready for cooler weather. I have had an interesting time this summer, did not travel, but stayed around the church and the parish, watching activities of those who are using our facility and also attending Sunday services. I have to say that while I miss the certainty of a Mass each and every Sunday, I have enjoyed Morning Prayer very much. It reminds me of home! Mr. Bob B. and Mr. Kirke W. have done a splendid job. It has been very quiet around here, even more so than usual with Miss Deborah away. I am praying for the recovery of her sick relative for whom she is caring. I have wanted to compliment the cleaners who did the floor in the Parish Hall. It is still so shiny, I can see my face reflected in it. As well, the choir room is amazingly tidy and clean. It looks grand and speaking of the choir, I sure will be glad when choir rehearsal resumes, also Rosary which is a half hour before choir rehearsal. As I have already said, it has been very quiet here. I for one am looking forward to September when we will start up our regular schedule and I pray we will all be on hand to support and worship at St. Bride s. 4 Vision Statement, Mission Statement, Church Slogans The Vestry has been working on creating a short memorable Vision statement. This is not to replace our Mission statement which is on our bulletin every Sunday, but is to be a short, catchy, repeatable phrase. It should be descriptive of who we are and what we believe in. See the example below Love God, Love Neighbor, Nurture Disciples. The Vestry offers these: Traditional Faith for New Disciples Deep Roots, Living Water For a Life of Faith and Fellowship Replacing Doubt with Faith To Worship God and Serve His People God opens the door, Come in! 5 Adult Formation Our new study topic begins September 9th. We will be using a video series and guide by Jeff Cavin on the Book of Revelation. Join us as we explore this remarkable and often misunderstood book of the Bible. Saint Brigid Have you been wondering where our lovely St. Brigid statue is? She was very slightly damaged when we had a leak in the narthex before reroofing. She has had a professional nose job and now her domain is being refreshed. Look for her to return in a month or so. Name Tags You may have noticed that Kirke has been wearing a name tag recently. He has been working on a design to be placed on a magnetic name tag which doesn t use clips or pins. Based on feedback from those who have noticed the tag, he has a few changes to make. Look for the revamped model to appear this Fall.
