That is the theme of this years Bishop s stewardship appeal and we can see from today s readings that this is also precisely what St. Paul was speaking of when he says that we are the Body of Christ, the Body of the Church; this is not a goal toward which we work, but a fact of our religion. As such our Baptism calls us to a willingness to accept our vocation as a member of Christ s Body, the Church. We are called to play out our function, our part. We each have different gifts, but we must seek to work together; our part is important to the Church, to Christ and to Stewardship of our time, our talents, our treasure. 3 January 24, 2016 Soccer Team Ready to Start Soon we will be fielding a Soccer Team we already have over 20 of our youth wanting to play and a Coach and a couple of assistant coaches. We would like to have about 30 players, so there is room for more players. Soccer practice and games start January 31st after Faith Formation! Each player must have a signed release from his/her parents; also cleats, shin guards and soccer sox. See Coach Jose for more details. Players are asked to obtain Cleats, Shin Guards and Soccer Sox. Arnaldo Bazan will be joining us for about a month he will arrive on January 30th and will be staying in our Re c t o r y f o r t he e n t i re m o n t h o f February. Fr. Arnaldo has been here for short stays for many years and we look for ward to his retur n. The convention center is trying hard to shorten lines and time needed to feed 7,000+ people. You may expect to wait on line for food, especially during the lunch break. The convention center has a policy that NO outside food/beverage items may be brought into the center. If you would like to bring your own food/beverage you may keep it in your car and access it throughout the event. We apologize for any inconvenience. EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS FLYERS Flyers promoting the 2016 Congress will be delivered to each Parish office in February. Be on the lookout! 9 SAINT OF THE WEEK CONVERSION OF PAUL THE APOSTLE first century Feast January 25 When the Jewish Pharisee Saul set out from Jerusalem to Damascus, his aim was to persecute the fledgling Christian community. The dramatic story of St. Paul s miraculous conversion is told several times in the Acts of the Apostles and New Testament letters. Paul became the apostle to the Gentiles and carried Christ s message around the Roman Empire. He also shares a feast day with St. Peter on June 29. The January feast was known as the translation of St. Paul in the martyrology of St. Jerome; it may originally have commemorated the moving of Paul s relics. Now, it appropriately closes the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Paul is the patron saint of Greece, Malta, and the Cursillo movement. FACT OF FAITH CONVERSION Each year on January 25, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle. The scripture readings for the day include the account from the Acts of the Apostles, of Paul encountering risen Christ on the road to Damascus. Paul had been a persecutor of the early Church, but as a result of his encounter with Jesus, he became a Christian and a powerful preacher of the Gospel. In the not-too-distant past, when one heard Catholics speak of conversion, it usually meant becoming Catholic and leaving some other faith behind. But today, becoming Catholic is a longer, more in-depth process of initiation. And conversion means something much more than becoming a member of the Catholic Church. If you look in the subject index of the Catechism of the Catholic Church for conversion in one of the first printings, it says see Contrition. This give us some idea of the real meaning of conversion: It s a change of heart, a transformation that involves turning away from sin and turning toward God and his grace. Furthermore, the Catechism explains that this conversion isn t a one-time event or even a single process. Instead, ongoing conversion is the task of all the baptized and even the Church itself. Quoting Lumen Gentium, number 8, from the Second Vatican Council, the Catechism explains that the Church [is] at once holy and always in need of purification, [and] follows constantly the path of penance and renewal (CCC, no. 1428). So, if you hear someone say that they re a convert to Catholicism, remember that we all are called to conversion as God s grace draws us closer to himself. PRAYER PRAYER FOR CHRISTIAN UNITY Let us pray for all our brothers and sisters who share our faith in Jesus Christ, that God may gather and keep together in one Church all those who seek the truth with sincerity. Almighty and eternal God, you keep together those you have united. Look kindly on all who follow Jesus, your Son. We are all consecrated to you by our common Baptism. Make us one in the fullness of faith, and keep us one in the fellowship of love. We ask this through Christ our Lord. R/. Amen. CATECHETICAL CORNER CONVERSION, CONFESSION, FORGIVENESS The Sacrament of Penance must be seen within the context of conversion from sin and a turn to God. Peter wept bitterly over his triple denial of Christ but received the grace of conversion and expressed it with a threefold confession of love for Jesus (cf. Lk 22:54-62; Jn 21:15-19). Paul was converted from persecuting Christians to becoming one of the greatest disciples of Christ who ever lived (cf. Acts 9:1-31). These moments of conversion were only the beginning of their lifelong commitment to living in fidelity to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Sin harms our relationship with God and damages our communion with the Church. Conversion of heart is the beginning of our journey back to God. Liturgically this happens in the Sacrament of Penance. In the history of the Church, this Sacrament has been celebrated in different ways. Beneath the changes, there have always been two essentials: the acts of the penitent and the acts of Christ through the ministry of the Church. Both go hand in hand. Conversion must involve a change of heart as well as a change of actions. Neither is possible without God s grace.
