DAVE FROM KATHRYNE LOPEZ: A 2006 ST. HELEN SCHOOL GRADUATE WHO IS NOW A POSTULANT WITH THE MERCEDARIAN SISTERS OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT IN CLEVELAND Dear Father Dave, Happy New Year! Sorry it has taken me so long to contact you, but here I am, 5 months in the convent! My convent is actually connected to a Catholic school that the Sisters teach in. The school reminds me a lot of my St. Helen School days. Thank you so much for asking the parish to pray for me. It meant a lot. It is significant that I went to St. Helen School from 5th 8th grade, and I wasn t aware of vocation in life. Maybe I just never listened when it came up in discussion, but I wish I knew. Yet, the Lord allowed me to experience St. Helen School the way it was for a reason that is mysterious, and I am grateful for that. I still remember how welcoming St. Helen Parish was to my family and how you said goodbye to us with great love. I encourage you to encourage your sheep to discern God s will but also to receive his mercy. Is it true that St. Helen is a Holy Door? Because that s awesome and such a blessing! This world need healing and what a gift to be a passageway for that healing. As a postulant with the Mercedarian Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, this is a special year for us. Parishioner Sunnie Lain, Zentangle Instructor, will lead participants through some basics of Zentangle, which uses simple lines to create intricate drawings and will help us explore how this focused task can help center us around God and his work in our lives. No experience necessary! There is no cost. Anyone 12 and up is welcome, but children under the age of 18 must come with an parent or guardian. MERCY MATTERS More than 30 people joined together for our first Mercy Matters event. Judge Michael Merz led a wonderful, accessible conversation about the challenges of mercy in the practice of the death penalty. Our next Mercy Matters will be February 15 at 6:00pm in the St. Julie Center. Parishioner, registered nurse, licensed spiritual director, and TedxDayton speaker Kim Vesey will join us to talk about caring for the sick as a work of mercy. Her unique perspective on the medical and spiritual aspects of illness and caring for loved ones, combined with her engaging speaking, will make for a wonderful evening. Dinner is provided and RSVPs are needed, so please call the office , or visit our website to register. SAVE THE DATES! After a long tradition of independent men's and women's soup suppers, we have decided to try a new arrangement that will hopefully allow us to serve the needs of more parishioners. This year, we will have one co-ed Soup Supper, which will be held on February 29 at 6:00pm, location TBD. Men, women, and students high school age and up are welcome to join us. The final details are being ironed out this week, but you won't want to miss this opportunity for great food and conversation! Additionally, we will be holding an all-ages event on March 8 at 6:30pm in the school gym. Our littlest to our wisest members and everyone in between is welcome to join in a hands-on experience of the corporal works of mercy. Snacks will be provided, but dinner is on your own. PRO-LIFE CHALLENGE Do you have a passion for the pro-life cause and time that you are willing to devote to this passion? Elizabeth s New Life Center (ENLC) is looking for men and women to serve on its Board of Directors. Requirements will be explained at a board orientation meeting arranged to fit your schedule. In general, ENLC s board meets bi-monthly, but there are other events (banquets, retreats, trainings, etc.) that board members are required to attend. Most board members chair at least one of our board committees which meet as often as necessary to reach the committee s strategic outcomes. Each committee has a SMART chart which delineates goals for the year and measures the progress toward meeting those goals.
