And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather, be afraid of the one who can destroy both soul and body in Gehenna. Did you ever notice that a lot of people in other faith traditions can speak so easily about their faith, about our call to live as Jesus did, and of the presence of the Evil One in our lives? How many Catholics do you know who are confident enough and comfortable enough to take on the challenge as presented to us in today s Gospel? Are we afraid to speak our faith? Does the idea of doing so seem a little embarrassing? Why? Would practicing among our intimate friends help us to gain confidence? It is true that actions speak louder than words, but can t our words help to reveal our motivation and purpose? And would using Christ s words make a difference in our thoughts? 5 ST. HELEN CHURCH RIVERSIDE, OHIO June 25, 2017 MUSICAL MUSINGS Church musicians everywhere breathe a little easier as we settle into the summer months. While the December-May stretch can feel like a whirlwind, covering five different liturgical seasons in six months, the current stretch of Ordinary Time is a wonderful opportunity for refreshment and simply being present to the ministry of Jesus heard in the gospels. There are a few major developments in music ministry that I d like to share with you, now that there is some space to do so. Sound System- As you are probably aware, we had a major sound system overhaul in March. It seems that we have most of the major bugs worked out, but there is still constant fine-tuning to be done. The new system does give us more real-time control of the system, but it is important to remember that as of this time, we do not have sound technicians working during masses. The levels of each microphone are set for the ideal situation; many factors contribute to the overall sound experience at any given moment. I am happy to receive feedback at any time, but please 1) assume ignorance- how something sounds to the priest in the sanctuary, the musicians at the side, and the congregation in the main body can be very different 2)Be as specific as possible The cantor was too loud is not as helpful as The cantor was too loud singing the psalm or I was sitting about two thirds of the way back on the left side near the speaker, and during the opening and closing hymn all I could hear was the cantor. 3)Don t be anonymous, because I would like to check in with you again after adjustments are made to see if the problem persists. New Musicians- I am thrilled to have several eager young musicians getting involved with music ministry. Ideally, I would like to increase these numbers even further. I personally started in music ministry as a cantor in the fifth grade, then started playing piano with our parish guitar ensemble when I was in seventh grade. One of the most important gifts my faith community ever gave me was the grace to screw up. I played wrong notes, played the wrong acclamation at the wrong time, missed verses in the song, and one time even had to stop in the middle of a hymn to regroup. Music ministry is an apprenticeship it can t be learned in a classroom. I hope to retire someday, and so I m asking for your prayers and support for these young musicians as they learn how to turn their love for music into service and worship of God. New Hymnals- By December of this year, we will have new hardbound hymnals. When we started with the Breaking Bread/Choose Christ combination, the plan was to reevaluate after three years. We are finishing year four with them, and the consensus among musicians and the worship commission is that the Breaking Bread system is not a sustainable use of resources for this parish. The plan at this point is to utilize a hard bound hymnal, which will be either the most recent version of Gather or the new RitualSong. We also plan to print a seasonal supplement a few times a year that will allow us to keep some of our favorites from the BB/CC hymnals.
