1 H O P E Hope Lutheran Church Sunday, November 18, 2018 November begins with All Saints Day and ends in or near Advent, when we anticipate Christ s coming again. So the readings today tell of the final resurrection and the end time. In the turmoil of hope, fear, and disbelief that these predictions provoke in us, Hebrews sounds a note of confident trust. Christ makes a way for us where there is no way, and we walk it confidently, our hearts and bodies washed in baptismal water, trusting the one who has promised. The more we see the last day approaching, the more important it is to meet together to provoke one another to love. GATHERING PRELUDE We Praise You, O God arr. H. 2 CALL TO CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: Surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, we are gathered in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen P: Lord, we want to be instruments of your peace, C: But too often we grumble instead of love; We injure rather than care; We doubt instead of believe. P: Lord, we know your plan for us, but we are seduced by the world around us, C: We doubt when we should have faith; We let despair overshadow the hope found in you; Sadness overcomes the joy we find in you. P: God of all consolation, grant that we might see your kingdom and live in the way you have intended for us C: that we may not so much seek to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love. For it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. P: Hear the Good News. God hears our confession and offers us forgiveness. Not because of what we have done, but because of God s grace shown through Jesus Christ. Know that your sins are forgiven and you are set free. 5 PRAYER OF THE DAY A: Let us pray... C: Almighty God, your sovereign purpose brings salvation to birth. Give us faith to be steadfast amid the tumults of this world, trusting that your kingdom comes and your will is done through your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Be Seated FIRST READING: Daniel 12:1-3 The book of Daniel is an example of apocalyptic literature, which is full of strange visions and symbolism. Arising during times of great persecution, apocalyptic literature is concerned with God s revelation about the end time and the coming kingdom of God, when God will vindicate the righteous who have been persecuted. 1 At that time Michael, the great prince, the protector of your people, shall arise. There shall be a time of anguish, such as has never occurred since nations first came into existence. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone who is found written in the book. 2 Many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 Those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky, and those who lead many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. R SECOND READING: Hebrews 10:11-14 [15-18] Images of worship and sacrifice are used throughout Hebrews to highlight what Christ has uniquely accomplished through his death. Because we have received forgiveness through Christ s death, we live with sincere hearts by trusting in God s promises and encouraging love and good works from each other. 11 Every priest stands day after day at his service, offering again and again the same sacrifices that can never take away sins. 12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 and since then has been waiting until his enemies would be made a footstool for his feet. 14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. [ 15 And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying, 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds, 17 he also adds, I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more. 18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.] 19 Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain (that is, through his flesh), 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us approach with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast to the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who has promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how to provoke one another to love and good deeds, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching. All are welcome to the Lord s Supper. Communion will be distributed from two stations at the front of the chancel in a continuous fashion. Both wine and non-alcoholic grape juice is offered. All cups in the tray contain wine, except for those in the outer ring which contain grape juice. Gluten-free wafers are available upon request. As the communicants gather at the altar we sing: 9

In the last week of his life, Jesus warned his disciples concerning trials that were to come upon them and upon the world. He exhorts the listener: Do not be alarmed. 1 As [Jesus] came out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, Look, Teacher, what large stones and what large buildings! 2 Then Jesus asked him, Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left here upon another; all will be thrown down. 3 When he was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, 4 Tell us, when will this be, and what will be the sign that all these things are about to be accomplished? 5 Then Jesus began to say to them, Beware that no one leads you astray. 6 Many will come in my name and say, I am he! and they will lead many astray. 7 When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed; this must take place, but the end is still to come. 8 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will be famines. 12 APOSTLE S CREED C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 13 OFFERING PRAYER A: God of all Saints, with faith and hope we offer these gifts of our time, talents, and treasurers. We have faith and hope in a generous God who meets our needs. We have faith and hope in a creative God who multiplies our gifts. We have faith and hope in a mysterious God who invites us to kingdom living. God of grace, accept these gifts and us in your service, In Jesus name we pray. C: Amen. MEAL Our Communion Liturgy is a sung call and response between the presiding minister and the congregation. Please take a moment to fill out a Visitor Connection card found in the pew, place it in the offering plate or hand to an usher. ADULT FORUM ~ Everyone, 5th grade thru adult, are invited to join us at 9:00am each Sunday in the fellowship hall as Pastor Doug Morton shares the scripture lessons for the day and gives us a bit of insight on the people and the events of Biblical times in preparation for the sermon. SUNDAY SCHOOL ~ combines Hope and Rehoboth congregations from 11:30 12:30. We meet in the Sunday School room in the Fellowship Hall. Different types of lessons and activities are planned, all centered around the messages and scriptures used in our 10am service. SHARED MINISTRY For a church to be successful it needs not only financial resources but human resources as well. Please complete the Shared Ministry form to let us know how you can support the mission of Hope. Sponsor a Family Watch for the little Christmas Tree in the Gathering Area and pick an ornament. Return the gifts, unwrapped, to church by Sunday, December 2. The children and families we will be shopping for primarily come from an inner city school. Risen Christ School in the Powderhorn neighborhood, where 96% of the population is living in poverty, and over half of these students will be the first member of their family to complete a High School education. 17

20 NOKOMIS HEALTHY SENIORS Nokomis Healthy Seniors is a neighborhood based organization specifically designed to help seniors. They offer home health aides, support groups, education, nurse consultation, transportation and more. For more info, contact the NHS office at E.B. White's beloved children's novel, Charlotte s Web, adapted by Joseph Robinette, comes to life on the CA stage on November 18 at 2:00 pm. Bring the whole family to this delightful production! 21 Although many of our members pitch in to help the congregation function on Sunday morning, many members also serve God by working at Hope throughout the week. But I hope to write a series of articles about members of Hope who serve God outside of what could be called church work. One member of Hope who has served and is continuing to serve God outside of church work is Eileen DePoe. About years ago she attended a forum where a speaker from Kinship of Minnesota was the speaker. The speaker talked about the need that some young people have for someone to mentor them. Eileen was interested in this and felt it was something she could do, so she volunteered to be a mentor. Eileen was paired with a young Native American girl who had been referred to this program by her aunt. She was 12 years old at that time and lived in South Minneapolis. Because Eileen got involved in the life of this girls Eileen s husband Dave got involved as well, but to a lesser extent. Since then, and it continues even today, Eileen and this person have met together many times to do things together. She has had the opportunity to encourage her to get involved in helping others, like working at a food shelf and delivering food to those in need. They have visited museums together. They have on occasion worshipped together. Eileen has been there to encourage this now young lady in getting an education. They have established some Christmas traditions with her. This kind of commitment to helping someone is the kind of commitment that does not involve Eileen every day, every week, or not even every month. But it is the kind of commitment that never ends as long as the person is open to this relationship. 21
