4 Notes from Fr. Nick The Madeleine Science Fair I remember entering the Science Fair as a seventh grader at Saint Joseph s School in Bradenton, Florida. I had done everything wrong: my project was so late that I had to take it to the science room on my bicycle after school was out for the day. Not only was it late, it was messy, and my accompanying explanation was full of spelling and grammatical errors. In 2014, Robert Hess, son of parishioners Peter and Viviane Hess, experimented with testing differences in the burn rate of potassium nitrate when mixed with different sugars. My parents were furious with me. They were upset that I had put so little effort into the project while others had spent weeks with the aid of their parents making miniature volcanoes, demonstrating photosynthesis and causing chemical reactions. Nevertheless, with wire, nails, light bulbs, and an old battery stapled to blocks of wood, I had clearly demonstrated how series and parallel electrical circuits worked and my project was awarded First Prize! Seventh-grader Diego Peña s experiment won top prizes at both the 2014 Oakland Diocesan Science Fair and the 2014 Alameda County Science Fair for all county schools. He proved that one could measure the effect on a driver s attention while texting or talking on a cell phone. I suppose in Eighth-grader Janelle Ingram, daughter of parishioners LaRon and Karen Ingram, devised an elegant experiment in olfactory chemistry, concluding the end, it was more about that vision does affect our experience of taste. execution than effort. A Science Fair is really about the scientific process, rather than the outcome. Can a student formulate a hypothesis, demonstrate it, and draw conclusions? Even if the experiment fails, if she or he follows this method, valuable lessons will be learned for future studies and work. Our Madeleine students have an advantage over my childhood efforts. They have excellent supervision, resources, and motivation. They recognize the value of process, discipline, and order. Further, their teachers instill in them a thirst for knowledge that will satisfy them for the rest of their lives. This Tuesday I m looking forward to seeing our students work. I hope they will use their knowledge to build inquisitive minds, for I believe that creative, critical, and or-

5 Parish News Lifetouch, the publisher of the St. Mary Magdalen 2017 Parish Directory, will provide us only a few copies over the number of portraits published. The only way to guarantee you ll receive a copy of the Directory is to put your photo in it! If you completed a portrait session with Lifetouch (back in November & December 2015), you will receive a complimentary Parish Directory. If you have submitted a photo or have had your portrait taken recently by one of the parish volunteer photographers you will also receive a copy of the 2017 Directory. The Banks-Altekruse family simply grabbed someone to take their photo after Mass! However, it s not too late! For only $10, your photo can appear in the upcoming Directory, and you will get a free copy. This volume will become a record of the most momentous year in the life of our parish since its founding in 1923 become a part of this keepsake! How? Bring a photo of yourself or your family to the parish office to be scanned. Or a photo to Laura at bulletin@marymagdalen.org. NEXT BOOK GROUP MEETING: THIS SATURDAY, January 27 th, at 10:00 am For our first meeting of 2018, the Book Group has chosen a book recommended to us by our founder, Fr. Cassian: In Paradise, by Peter Matthiessen, a threetime winner of the National Book Award. According to his publisher, Peter Matthiessen was a literary legend, the author of more than thirty acclaimed books. In this, his final novel, he confronts the legacy of evil, and our unquenchable desire to wrest good from it. We ll meet to discuss it at 10:00 am this Saturday, January 27th, in the parish conference room. Buy or rent the book, then join us for a lively discussion! Social Justice Notes Last Pope Francis led a Mass for the Catholic Church s World Day of Migrants and Refugees, reminding Catholics and the world to welcome, protect, promote and integrate refugees and migrants. He acknowledged the doubts and fears of both migrants and new host communities, but said, Having doubts and fears is not a sin The sin is to refuse to encounter the other, the different, the neighbor, when it is in fact a privileged opportunity to encounter the Lord. The World Day of Migrants and Refugees was established in 1914 by Pope Pius X, who was concerned about a mounting refugee crisis in Europe driven by World War I. The United Nations did not establish its own World Refugee Day until the year The termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) by the current Administration flies in the face of Pope Francis call to the world. Pray for the 200,000 El Salvadorans now being turned out of our country after years here as our friends, neighbors, family, co-workers, and contributors to our society. Benefit at Ashkenaz for Immigrants in Detention January 28 th : Help raise bond funds to support men and women targeted and detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) due to their immigration status. ICE detainees at the West County Detention Facility in Richmond are not provided legal counsel, and often cannot raise the average bond of $3,411. Imagine navigating our complex federal legal system without representation, while being forced to sit behind bars, isolated from family and friends and unable to afford an attorney and bail! We can help: The Community Initiatives for Visiting Immigrants in Confinement (CIVIC) fundraiser at Ashkenaz will raise funds for detainees bonds. Sing, dance, and move to the rhythms of the highly spirited Dance Chants and smooth jazz of Humanistic! Doors open at 2:15 pm, show: 2:45-5:30 pm. Tickets available at the door, $10-30 sliding scale, $10 for children 12 and under. Visit ashkenaz.org (for event details) and endisolation.org (to learn about CIVIC). Attend the Next Interfaith Vigil: Saturday, February 3rd, 11:00-Noon at West County Detention Center (5555 Giant Highway, Richmond). Stand in solidarity with immigrants being held by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at this facility. This is a monthly event sponsored by congregations of faith throughout the East Bay.

6 Refugee Committee Chair Ann Fitzgerald, outgoing Finance Chair Bob Kelleher, and RCIA Leader Jonathan Harmon, S.J., listen intently to the keynote speaker at the Parish Leadership Conference in Orinda, Fr. Dan Danielson. Parish Volunteer Technical Support Specialist Cat Neilsen prepares the slides, while speaker Fr. Dan Danielson chats with Joe Fitzgerald. Dennis Smith looks on while wife Sally, a SOM graduate, points to an old school photo held by Heather Skinner, VP and Parish DRE. Tom Hall, Music Director Andy Canepa, Barney Quinn, Monica Grycz Incoming Finance Chair Ann Flemer explains the state of the parish finances. St. Mary Magdalen Business Manager Norah Hippolyte explains our Parish Council. Ken Willers is starting his 8th year as School of the Madeleine Principal. Visible in rear: Finance Board member John Rengel, Maria Curtis, Therese Pipe, Alex Saldanha and Madge Tsang. In front: Mary Jo Senica & George Baranowski, Dinner Coordinators; Grant Nakamura, Boy Scout Leader. Priest-in-Residence Fr. Laurent Okitakatshi
