Calvary Episcopal Church 1615 First St. Indian Rocks Beach, Florida Members of The Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States (TEC) & The Episcopal Diocese of Southwest Florida The Crier November 2014 Monthly Newsletter Collect of the day Christ the King (November 23 rd ) Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your well beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. Jesus is King. Shortly after the feast of All Saints on Sunday, November 2 nd we celebrate Christ the King Sunday (23 rd ). This Sunday actually marks the end of the Christian year. It is the culmination of an entire year that leads us up to this revelation of Jesus as the Messiah. The Sunday following Christ the King is always the first Sunday in Advent (30 th ) and we begin the new Christian year with stories that prepare for the birth of Christ in the manger. It is the anticipation of the king that would ultimately rule our lives. We ve read about a lot of kings in the Bible. There was Rameses (Pharoah), Saul, David, Solomon, Nebechenezzar, Cyrus, Caesar and Herod, to name a few. Not all of these were good kings. Most enslaved or oppressed the people of Israel. What makes a king good? In the list above, David and one of his sons, Solomon, were considered good kings but they were not without blemish. David violated the commandment, Thou shall not commit adultery. Solomon violated the commandment, Thou shall not covet. What made them good was 1

that they had God s will in mind and the people s best interest at heart. Based on their faith in God, they were given a vision and built trust. When a king listens to God and follows God s will their leadership will endure the test of time. Jesus was more than a good king. He always found opportunities to listen to the Father in heaven. He often prayed and asked that God s will be done. He had the heart of God. Jesus spent much time with people. He taught them, healed them and fed them. He focused on twelve disciples, knowing that not all would be able to abide in his commands to love God and to love thy neighbor as thyself. What made him more than a good king was the power of his love by dying on the cross for his people. This is what made Jesus the King of kings. Do you feel Jesus is the King of your life? Do you feel Jesus still reigns in our world? Perhaps his kingship is best revealed by those who pledge their life for him. If our life is made to return one day to the Kingdom of God, we should prepare by showing our trust towards him today. Like all the rulers and peoples who have lived before, who were good, we discover this is not enough to belong to God. We must lay down our own crowns of accomplishment and experience and moving away from our own pride and hypocrisy. Let your legacy be one who trusts God. Begin by proclaiming the good news. Jesus is King. Blessings, Father Jon Christian Education Confirmation There are four young men and three young ladies who have been meeting faithfully with Fr. Jon every Wednesday night since September in his office. They are Confirmands. They each have a sponsor who will pray them through the process and be by their side on May 24 th when the Bishop will officiate the Confirmation rite of passage. This is a special and sacred passage as scripture, tradition and reason strengthen their faith in Jesus. They have learned, What I believe, The Bible both Old and New Testaments and are now entering their review of the Book of Common Prayer. 3 Stewardship The Pledge What is a Pledge? It is what we have solemnly promised to give back to God by giving to His holy Church over the course of a year. It certainly is expressed in time, talent and treasure but the general understanding is that it is a financial gift. It is a grateful exchange of love for what God has sacrificed for us. He gave us His Son, Jesus, so that we might live. It is an understanding between us and God. Therefore the pledge is an endearing covenant. The Church is the vessel of this pledge. Last year we made a Covenant together and pledged our financial support to Calvary. It began the first Sunday in Advent and lasted through each subsequent Sunday through that season. Families and individuals took to heart the importance of the Pledge and what it meant to this Church. We walked as one body to the altar of our Lord and placed our Pledge cards. We did this out of love for God and love of this Church. To pledge is to love. This year we have a goal and we need each member to take it once again to heart. Sample Card In 2013 we had $140,000 of pledged gifts. In 2014 we had $165,000 of pledged gifts. In 2015 we need to collect $180,000 of pledged gifts. This is 9% morethan last year. The Vestry has charged the Treasurer and Finance Committee to present a budget that will help us meet our goals for We have already talked about the great need to reduce expenses and to raise membership. All of our leaders are working together towards these goals. Now, we need all of our families and individuals to help and do their part, taking the Journey to the tithe. The tithe is 10% of all income but most people are proportional givers. If you gave 3% of your income last year to Calvary, consider giving 5% this year. Take the journey and help us in our stewardship efforts. We want to see every member come out and make a covenant with God and a pledge to the Church. In the next few weeks we will present the Pledge Card to every member (see sample card to the right). Please make a prayerful effort to raise your pledge this year for the operation of the Church. The First Pledge Sunday is the First Sunday in Advent on November 30 th at both the 8/10am Holy Eucharists. 3

Property Jr. Warden s Report Fire Alarm Panel As many of our 10 o clocker s are aware, our Fire Alarm System went into complete failure mode during communion a couple of weeks ago. All the bells and whistles were going off and we were powerless to do anything until Suncoast Fire arrived and shut the system off. To his credit, Father Jon carried on with communion moving to the exit door with the Host and the LEM s. Closing service was held in the north parking lot. Afterward he told me that is was very different and hoped someone had a picture of how well we always continue to carry on at Calvary. The bad news is that we are forced to replace the entire alarm panel. It is obsolete and parts are no longer available for this unit. The panel was originally installed in 1995 and was state of the art at that time. If you think back 20 years and the technology available and compare it to what is out there today we have indeed been lucky. I believe my cell phone can perform more tasks than the average desktop computer could do at that time. I spent a week exploring all the different options open to us and the costs so that I was able to give Father Jon the benefit of what I had learned so that an intelligent decision could be made. All the emergency lights, alarms, smoke detectors and other items that tie into the alarm system are universal. This means that we only have to purchase and have installed the actual alarm panel. All the other equipment will stay the same. I am hoping and praying that when I write this article next month I will be announcing the completion of the Red Envelope campaign. I would like to personally thank all of you that have gone above and beyond the call of duty with your generous donations. Thanks to you we will all be cool and comfortable in the months to come. Jerry L. Brewer jlofbelize@hotmail.com Leadership Nominations for the 2015 Vestry This year s nominees by the Nomination Committee are Chuck Pond, Jo Simpson, Jim Yanicheck and Derek Good. They were selected based on the spiritual gifts they have demonstrated over the course of this year. Biographies of the candidates will be included in the December Crier. Those who wish to nominate another member may do so as long as they have given their consent. The qualifications are that they must be a giver of record (pledge), in good standing 6

(as deemed by the Rector), over the age of 18 and one who demonstrates a positive attitude. Please submit all nominations to the Rector, Sr. Warden, Jr. Warden, or Clerk of the Vestry. The deadline for all names on the ballot will be December 14 th and will be presented for election at the Annual Parish Meeting on January 25 th. Names may be accepted on the floor at the time of the meeting. The 46th Diocesan Convention, 2014 We Have This Treasure This was the theme chosen by Bishop Dabney Smith for the 46 th Annual Convention of the Diocese of Southwest Florida. How true this proved to be. We are so fortunate in this diocese to have so many wonderful churches and equally wonderful people. I spent two days with the most amazing Christians who were so willing to share information about things that have worked and not worked in their respective parishes. I have come back inspired. I attended seminars on things that are so useful to know when a person is involved in doing volunteer work for a church. I listened to the Bishop s address to the convention and received even more inspiration. This is a marvelous event and if you ever are invited to attend don t pass up the chance or just attend on your own as an interested party. Sometimes it is hard to picture that the church as a whole has the same monetary and budgetary concerns that we as individuals face in our everyday life. We do have this treasure; it is the people who work very hard every day giving generously to the church of their time and talent. It is not the money one gives but the energy, enthusiasm and hard work that often helps to grow a congregation. Jerry L. Brewer Convention Delegate Pastoral Care Ebola Since media coverage of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) is daily, it behooves us to stay current on the facts and aware of the most reliable sources of information. Some facts: Ebola, previously known as hemorrhagic fever, is a rare and deadly virus. It enters the body through our membranes, breaks in the skin, and/or wound punctures. It is easily spread by touching the blood or body fluids of a person who is showing active symptoms of or is confirmed to have Ebola. It can also be spread by touching contaminated objects such as needles or infected animals. It is not spread through the air, water or food. In the USA, the Department of Health (DOH) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC)are the two agencies that will confirm the diagnosis. Symptoms Symptoms occur typically between 8-12 days after exposure but as long as 21 days. 7

Abrupt onset of fever (>101.5 F). Rash, typically on neck, trunk or arms. Fatigue, vomiting, diarrhea and or loss of appetite Muscle pain or abdominal pain Anyone who has these symptoms should report to the Emergency Room. Anyone who has been in contact with this person should contact the local Department of Health and stay home until cleared by the DOH. Protection Handwashing. Handwashing. Handwashing. Warm water, good lather, thorough washing & rinsing. This protective action is most effective if conducted over the full singing of Happy Birthday to you. Happy birthday to you. Happy birthday dear Happy Birthday to you. Then dry. Working with the DOH and CDC, every hospital is implementing a good plan for patients who are suspected of having the virus. We hear a lot about staying home. If anyone remembers the days of measles, mumps or chicken pox, we were all forced to stay home so as not to infect others. It s no different for any disease including EVD. It's common sense. What can I do? Stay informed: Florida DOH. or CDC at Consider a donation to Episcopal Relief & Development or to Doctors Without Boarders And of course, as with all other travails and appreciations of life, we have God. Remember this issue to Him in prayer. As a nurse working in a local hospital s research department, I am encouraged by the information flow, by the response of our local hospitals, the Department of Health, the Center for Disease Control, the aggressive research, and our government s response. Yes, I am also concerned because this is serious and new to North America. However, knowledge is power, there is power in prayer, and prayer brings hope and a new day. Let s focus on that new day.while we're washing our hands. Medicare Options Medicare options are in full swing. While many options exist, please know that not all are accepted by all physicians. So if you are happy with your physician teams, consult their business offices on next year s accepted plans before you make any choices. Most, if not all physicians, take straight Medicare. That is, their payment for your care comes from the government and not, as it is commonly called, from a third party payor. Third party payors can be Cigna, Florida Blue, Aetna, etc. Straight Medicare is always an option even if you ve previously been with a third party. Please do not assume because your physician office accepted your insurance for the last 10 years that they will continue to do so. Because of reimbursement changes, contract issues, or new management they may decide to decline the next year s options. So if attending a Medicare options information session and the presenter indicates that they will pay out to any physician, remember, that while this is true, the physician may not accept their payment. For the best information, contact your local representative of SHINE, (Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone) at or at Yours in good health, Jo Simpson on behalf of your Pastoral Care Team 8

Bake Sale The Altar Guild will be selling baked goods and coffee at the annual Community Yard Sale to be held on November 29, from 8:00 a.m. until we are sold out. The profit from this sale will go toward the parish Holiday Meals project and to supplement needs for the Altar. We need your help to make this event a success. If you would be willing to volunteer to bake items for us please sign up on the sheet that is located on the reception counter. Think cookies, brownies, cake, candy or anything homemade. The items must be turned in at the kitchen door, between 3:00 3:30 on Friday, November 28. Please package them the way you would like them sold. We look forward to your helping us for this very worthy cause. Cynthia Laitinen for the Altar Guild Coffee Hour The Sunday Coffee Hour is still the place to be between and after Mass. We look forward to our "snowbirds'" return - and the possibility of some extra hands to help continue the serving of fellowship and the best coffee on Indian Rocks Beach. Harvey and I have enjoyed 10+ years of setting up the coffee, cake, and juice and are willing to pass on our expertise in the art of catering. I have looked back on my years of Crier reports and see that this is an oft repeated plea - and we are still looking for help! IRB Yard Sale Calvary will again participate in the IRB yard sale - donors (no clothing or electronics please) and volunteers to price, sell (negotiate/bicker) as well as set up tables for our sale items. The Altar Guild will have a bake sale table as well. Kitchen The "Calvary Kitchen" is the scene of many events, mostly happy, some bittersweet when celebrating the life of someone dear to us. It is the responsibility of all who use the kitchen to not only clean up (wash, dry and put away) but return items to their proper place, above all - return items! Scissors, serving pieces, tablecloths have all gone missing; We are waiting for your call ( ) from Susan & Harvey Brillat for hospitality Worship Liturgy Commission Report Father Jon, Rachel Hill, Matt Burke, Nancy Pappas and Cathy Athanson have been working together as members of the Liturgy Commission. This group has established several goals for this year. The major goal is to provide liturgical services that honor God and our Lord Jesus Christ and support the spiritual growth of all associated with this faith community. We will work in partnership with everyone in the parish to diligently achieve this goal by providing and increasing opportunities to enrich the spiritual growth of all who enter the doors of Calvary. We hope to expand the music programs so that they offer a variety of musical expressions and opportunities that will enhance worship and encourage participation in services. Other action steps include providing opportunities to expand the prayer life of the parish, expand lay leadership opportunities for worship involvement, and provide educational opportunities to enhance appreciation and participation in liturgical worship. A strong emphasis is being placed on our youth this year and it is establishing new programs that will motivate involvement and educate our young people 10

in understanding all the components of their faith community. It is our prayerful hope that many of you will step forward and become involved in liturgical opportunities this year. Altar Flowers Flowers are donated weekly to adorn the altar. These flowers both beautify our worship space and remind us of Jesus, the living Lord. Calvary invites you to contribute to the Altar Flower ministry by choosing a Sunday that has special meaning to you. Often, more than one person finds a certain date important; so flowers may be given in more than one name on any given Sunday. Celebrate a variety of moments: In Memory of a loved one, In Celebration of a marriage, birth, baptism or other special event, or In Honor of someone special, or simply to the Glory of God. Altar flowers are also delivered to sick and shut-in. Please contact, Rachel Hill in the church office if you wish to donate flowers. There is also a sign up sheet located in Parish Hall. Respectfully submitted, Cathy Athanson Altar Guild Poem October rolled around and the guild did meet; They made their plans for upcoming weeks. God-given talents will be put in place; Work in the sacristy will hit a high pace. Father Jon and Deacon Melissa gave directions to guide us this year; Their knowledge and guidance we hold very dear. Managing vestments, vessels and linens will keep us on track; We know very well there is no slack. No matter wedding, baptism, or funeral needing prep; The altar guild team is always in step. Pancake suppers and yard sales keep our coffers rich; These events always come off without a hitch. 11 (Cathy Athanson) YOU ARE INVITED TO JOIN OUR TEAM AND BECOME PART OF THIS WONDERFUL MINISTRY! Respectfully submitted for the Altar Guild, Cathy Athanson, weacpa@tampabay.rr.com Outreach Visitor Cards Each time we receive a Visitor Card we take the time to call or write them back, letting them know how much we appreciate their attendance in church on that Sunday. Some people see our sign on the street, others are invited by a member or family, and others look us up on our website. We are in need of certain individuals who have a gift of hospitality and can join the Outreach team. Visitors are looking for a warm and inviting atmosphere where they feel God s presence. If you are interested in joining us, please see Father Jon or Cherie Smith.

Missions Shoe Box Ministry As Christians, we received the greatest gift with the birth of Christ. Now, it is that time of year for us to share with others less fortunate than us. The goal this year is to fill 175 shoe boxes for the children of migrant workers. Since it is just the first of November we have one month to pick-up our shoe boxes and get them filled before we have to deliver them to the Bishop s office. The wrapped shoe boxes are available at the front reception desk. There is a sign-up sheet for you to indicate how many boxes you are taking and the ages you have chosen. Please, pick up a shoe box to fill and return it as soon as possible. If you don t have time to shop, a monetary donation will be gratefully received. Make check out to Calvary Episcopal Church, and write Shoe Box Ministry in the memo line. If you still need inspiration, I have attached a copy of the letter from Deacon Dennis describing the delivery of shoe boxes in Not too many of you will have a dry eye after reading it. Remember, these children have nothing and our small gifts may be the only Christmas they will receive this year. Jerry L. Brewer Shoe Box Ministry Age Groups for Shoe box Gifts Gift suggestions will be with the sign-up sheet. Infants 2 4 years (toddlers) 5 7 years (early elementary) 8 11 years (elementary) years (middle school years (high school) A letter from Arch Deacon Dennis R. McManis Picture if you will, a small church in a rural farming community on Christmas Eve. Outside you see candles glowing in the stained glass windows and hear joyful voices singing in Spanish. Inside the church every pew is filled and people are standing around the walls of the church. The congregation is predominately poor Latino farm workers. Over half of those attending this most special and Holy Mass are children ranging in ages from new born to teenagers. After the service everyone went to the parish hall for a lovely seasonal meal prepared by their priest and his family. The children are anxiously awaiting the arrival of Santa Claus, with beautifully wrapped presents in his red bag. This is not a fairly tale, it really happened. The Latino congregation from St. Edmund's Episcopal Church in Arcadia was truly blessed, and a wonderful Christmas was experienced through the generosity and brotherly love they received from their sisters and brothers in Christ at Calvary Episcopal Church. Without your Christmas Shoe Box Ministry, these families would net have had anything for their children. God bless your Calvary family. Thank you for your generosity, passion and compassion for the least among us. May our loving Lord continue to richly bless all of 12 those who made this possible.

Pill Bottle Ministry Thanks to all of you who donate your empty pill bottles to be shipped to Matthew 25 Ministries for distribution of medications to the poor. It is suggested that before you deposit them in the boxes that you either remove the labels or blank out the information on them. (It has been my experience that the labels are easier to remove if not dampened.) We have shipped 10 boxes this year and have two more ready to go. Monetary donations are welcome to help cover the cost of shipping. Thank you for your continuing support. Ralph Kiphuth/Marilyn Clark Co-Chairmen Food Pantry The Beach Community Food Pantry Needs Your Help! Children and Hunger By Joan Kelly Do you know that one in four children live in food-insecure households within the United States? The problem of childhood hunger is not simply a moral issue. A child who is hungry is unable to focus, concentrate and learn in school. Scientific evidence suggests that hungry children are less likely to become productive citizens. Proceeds from Calvary s Beach Community Food Pantry help fund local students in our public schools who cannot afford school supplies. School can be an exciting and stressful experience for students of all ages. Imagine the discomfort of a poor and underfed child as he or she enters the classroom. Let s help the less fortunate youth in our area begin life with the proper nutrition to succeed in school and become positive members of our community. Please help the volunteers who distribute food ensure that families in need will have nutritious meals on their tables. Consider donations of cash, food, or perhaps, healthy food and snacks that might appeal to children of all ages. The Beach Community Food Pantry is located at st Street, Indian Rocks Beach and is open Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10-Noon. If you miss the pantry hours there is a drop-off basket inside the doors leading into the sanctuary. A convenient drop-off is also located in Indian Rocks City Hall. Harvest Blessing Benefit Bash, Saturday, November 22 nd : Dinner prepared by a professional chef, dancing with music provided by a D.J. and a silent auction are just some of the many things for this wonderful benefit. All proceeds go to the Food Pantry. Please contact Connie Curran via ctc416@gmail.com for ticket cost and purchase. We offer a special bit of gratitude to Pete and Dawn Grasso who have always organized this event. 13
