3 MAY 21, 2017 SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER 3 PASTOR S GREETING: SOPHISTRY AGAINST LIFE All around the world the life and dignity of the human being, a being inherently personal, as an inalienable right is being assailed and curtailed by governments, including our own. As Pope Saint John Paul II put it, a culture of death is rampant in the world today. The struggle on behalf of the legal protections of embryonic and prenatal human life has made some progress in our country presently against those who assign it less than full human status, but the struggle is far from over. Those who promote euthanasia (mercy killing, assisted suicide, suicide, eugenic killing, etc.) seem to be making remarkable headway on that front either in achieving outright legalization of euthanasia in some jurisdictions or in permissive non-enforcement of the laws prohibiting it in others. The philosophical humanism which acknowledges a value to the human being transcending all positive human laws the value which gives a foundation to the justice of those very laws guards against the tyrannies of human arrogance and the will to power over the smallest and weakest. History clearly warrants the need for this caution. Historically, this humanistic philosophy recognizes a law of the good of human nature and humility before the whole context of an objective reality in which we humans live and for which we are somewhat responsible. The recognition of such natural laws which may be discoverable by and known to humanity hold entirely apart from human will and decision and demand our concurrence, even obedience, if we wish to survive and thrive. There is, of course, also a secular humanism which exalts human power and makes government and its laws the absolute authority. The result of this arrogance is either the anarchy of the mob or the tyranny of the majority. Interestingly, the authors of the US Constitution (still informed by the Declaration of Independence) sought to avoid this arrogance of power by recognizing an authority above the constitution, an authority known to the people, namely, the authority of nature and of nature s God. The self-governed people acknowledged the authority of God, variously understood and worshiped, as an authority greater than their own which was the basis of true justice and of freedom. Religious believers who acknowledge the Creator understand the natural law as established in God s creative design and, when obedient, bow humbly before God s will established in the nature of things. Catholic Christian tradition recognizes also the revealed design and will of God given us in Jesus Christ. Natural law and revealed Gospel law for us go seamlessly together (for the one God is author of all truth), even though we see what distinguishes them from each other. Grace builds on and perfects nature. We also see the arrogant hubris of an inclination to evil in humanity which tempts us to take absolute power over human life to suit our own ends. At the same time, we acknowledge the temptation in humanity to deny God s absolute authority over human life and to deny thereby the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Conversion and grace enable us to be faithful to the whole value and faithful to God as our Creator and as our Redeemer. So, we can speak a coherent rational and ethical message with intellectual and fully personal integrity to a non-religious world, a message which is nonetheless also faithful to our religion without inherent contradiction. The arguments proposed in pursuit of the legalization of euthanasia, in fact all arguments against the inalienable right to life and on behalf of willful killing, are sophistical, that is, they are intellectually dishonest. They pose as arguments based on the values of human autonomy, compassion, economy, and high culture. In each case, a limited human value is absolutized to overturn the superior value of life in service of the will to power, to supplant a superior good with a lesser one while placing the specific and the common good of humanity at peril. Human autonomy and liberty is a value only in the balance of real human limits and the requirements of the common good. It is relative to other true goods. If autonomy is absolute, the two year old will reigns supreme. If the sovereignty of the individual over one s own life is absolute, then the good of the community, of the family, of the social order as superior is simply set aside. Similarly, if the government has absolute sovereignty (autonomy) over whether or not one may continue living (whatever the justification may be) then all life is in jeopardy of an abominable power. The Christian knows this to be true for we also know that the human being is a beloved creature of God, each one offered redemption in Jesus Christ. But, the euthanist argues that it is cruel to allow or to require the human being to suffer by denying death as an escape from that suffering. Granted, many suffering people demand the means of death to end that suffering. But many people also demand it not for themselves but for others who do not make that demand or even desire it. Is it compassionate to euthanize, directly and intentionally to kill or to assist in the killing of an injured, disabled, and/or suffering human being? No, it is not compassionate. Compassion seeks to comfort and to alleviate pain while valuing the life of the suffering fellow human being. To bear with the fellow sufferer is to acknowledge the limits under which we all exist. To care for another until the end comes is a supreme fidelity, an acknowledgment of the bond owed among personal beings for each other in life. Compassion suffers with. It does not arrogate the power to exterminate, because the common good of the social order is a bond of fidelity, of value, and of trust required for the human good. We Christians know values in our suffering revealed by our Lord Jesus Christ who invites us to communion with his suffering through our own. Compassionate suffering is the path upon which we walk with Christ to our own redemption and to that of the redemption of the world. If we suffer with Christ we shall also reign with Christ to the glory of God. We are refined by suffering with Christ and bear witness to the kingdom of God. We also believe in mitigating suffering and in diminishing pain insofar as we are able, to offer palliative care to the dying without intending or directly causing death. The care we give to the suffering and to the dying is care given to Christ himself. (Continued on page 4)

4 4 SS PETER & PAUL CATHOLIC CHURCH, HOPKINSVILLE, KY (Continued from page 3) So, are we to avoid death at all costs? No. Isn t a timely chosen death more reasonably affordable so that costly resources may be more available to the healthier? Simply answered, No. Again, recognition of human limits to the means and the possibilities of healing and comforting is honest. Ordinary, reasonable means to heal, to provide effective hydration and nutrition, to comfort, we all benefit from these. Sometimes even heroic efforts might be warranted if these may be reasonably expected to heal and to restore. When death is already and naturally probable and unavoidable, futile and aggressive counter measures, which would likely only increase suffering, are not warranted. We may surrender virtuously before inevitable human mortality. A vigil of comfort and personal care for the dying is warranted. The Christian also knows that if we die with the Lord we shall also rise with the Lord. Our hope in faith is full of immortality. When reason and moral principle fail the arrogant all that is left is for them to sneer haughtily and to ridicule opposition to euthanasia. Perhaps, if that doesn t work, there is always the angry tirade and violence. The humane response to our mortality is always to be virtuous. The further Christian response is through the gift of the Holy Spirit to respond to evil with good. We are not the sovereigns of death and ought never to arrogate such authority to ourselves. To respond to lethal aggression with measured, effective defense turns the forces of death back upon the perpetrator. To initiate the killing of a human being as a means to a social or political end is an unmitigated and intrinsic evil. It is never morally justifiable and in the light of Jesus Christ is mortally, gravely sinful. May this reflection help you consider the issues of our times. Fr. Richard Graduation Mass As a parish we will honor our high school graduates on Sunday, May 28 th at the 10:30 Mass. A luncheon for our graduates and their families will follow in the gym. If you would like to assist with this luncheon, please see Libby. *Graduates don t forget to give me your pictures (one wallet size for a bulletin insert needed by Tuesday, May 23 rd and a 5 X 7 or larger by Friday, May 26 th for display in the narthex). Sympathy: We pray for our parishioner, Rosalina Lopez who passed away on Sunday, May 14 th at Baptist Health Hospital in Madisonville. She was 72 years old. Prior to moving to Hopkinsville, Rosalina retired from quality control at Schick Manufacturing in Milford, Connecticut after 22 years. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Juan Lopez as well as two sons: Juan Lopez, Jr. of Hamden, Connecticut and Edwin Lopez of Hopkinsville; two daughters Rose Marie Davis of Rialto, California and Jeannette Lopez of Hamden, Connecticut; one brother, Hiram Roldan of Indiana and Gloria Lopez of Puerto Rico; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Her Memorial Mass was held here at Saints Peter and Paul on Wednesday, May 17 th. As a parish, let us keep the Lopez family in our prayers this week as they mourn their loss and may we as a church pray: May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen. Retirement Celebration for Sarah Kranz: As you know our principal, Sarah Kranz, will be retiring this year after 40 plus years of service to Saints Peter and Paul Catholic School and to the School System here in Hopkinsville, Christian County. A Retirement Celebration will be held on Saturday, May 27 th immediately after the 5:00 p.m. Mass and all are welcome to come celebrate with us. This week on the table in the narthex you will find a spiritual bouquet book. Would you take the time and write her a note of your appreciation for her faithful, dedicated service to our Saints Peter and Paul School and to our children. (Picture of Miss Kranz handing out certificates to our pre-school class of 2017.) Solemnity of the Ascension: In most dioceses within the United States, the Solemnity of the Ascension has been moved/transferred from Thursday to the Seventh Sunday of Easter. Therefore, we at Saints Peter and Paul are celebrating the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord next Sunday, May 28 th. The event of the Ascension of Jesus made an indelible impression on the memory of the first disciples so that we find their witness to it in the Gospels and in the Acts of the Apostles. Forty days after his resurrection, Jesus led his disciples to the Mount of Olives, towards Bethany, and while he blessed them, he parted from them and was carried up to heaven (Lk 24:50-51). Naturally, they remained looking on high, but were suddenly called back to earth by two angels, Why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus will come in the same way that you have seen him go into heaven. Pope John Paul II, Regina Caeli, May 27, 2001 Courtesy of V.I.S. Vatican Information Service
