Please mark that it is for Anderson s ministry to Albania. The church will forward your gifts to World Gospel Mission. Please pray for us as we prepare as well as during the trip. Thank you for partnering with us in this ministry. Evergreen rides in NDSCS Homecoming parade Bonnie and Peder, pictured while taking part in CHE training in Springfield, MO in August of 2016 Stewardship Topic Set to Begin This Month by Wayne Millar Pastor Jen is preparing a four-part sermon series with a stewardship theme, called Money Matters. The messages will be about 1) eliminating debt, 2) earning, 3) saving and 4) gifting. This should be an interesting series of messages for anyone wishing to learn about good money management practices during these difficult times. Please plan on attending these Sunday morning services, which will begin on October 23 and will end in November. On October 23 at 1 PM, Evergreen will offer a one-hour Dave Ramsey Financial Peace crash course. This is open to all and the community is also invited. Sunday, October 30 - Annual Charge Conference Meeting Our District Superintendent, Rev. Randy Cross, will be leading our annual Charge Conference on Sunday, October 30. Please plan to stay after worship for a potluck meal together, followed by our Charge Conference meeting. We will spend a few minutes discussing our business and reports, and the rest of our time discussing our mission, vision, hopes and dreams for Evergreen UMC. Daylight saving time ends remember to fall back on Nov. 6

2 Grow Page 2 Evergreen United Methodist Church October, 2016 Youth News By Pastor Jen Our youth are off to a strong start after our first meeting on Wednesday, September 21! We will now be meeting every Wednesday night in Zion Chapel for a night of fun and fellowship and hope all of our youth grades 7-12 can and will join us! We begin at 7pm, end by 8:30pm, and always welcome friends and visitors. We are also looking forward to volunteering and giving out candy at this year s Zoo Boo on October 30th. If you have any questions, be in touch with Pastor Jen. Hope to see you soon! Christian Education Happenings By Becky Dockter Our Sunday School groups are back in full swing, and we are looking forward to a new year of gathering together to grow in our faith. The children are using the Sparkhouse series, which is set up in a similar way to how Bible School is set up, in that studies and lessons may incorporate art, cooking, role playing and/or music! As we continue to pray and search for the right person to step forward to lead our children's and youth programs, we are still in need of volunteers to help out with Sunday School. Please contact the office, or you may contact Becky Dockter directly to volunteer for a Sunday or two at beckydockter@gmail.com. Evergreen serves God and others through: Sharing together (Fellowship) Encountering God (Worship) Reaching out (Evangelism) Congratulations to Beck and Evan, 3rd graders who received their Bibles on September 18th. Children (pictured above) prayed over the Bibles during the children's sermon before they were distributed. (Photo by Jenny Schmitt) Christmas Kids Project Coming Soon By Fern Bailey Shoppers are needed for the Christmas Kid's Project. A shopper contacts the family in October to see what outer clothing needs they might have for children. Shoppers meet Oct. 17 at 7 pm. If you aren't interested in being a shopper, you can make cash donations to the project, or shop for a toy. Sign-up sheets will be upcoming. If you have questions, call Fern Bailey or (cell) or Julie McGovern at the church office. SAVE THE DATE!! Bishop Ough will share the message during worship on Sunday, October 9 and will lead a discussion during adult Sunday School. Volunteering our Gifts (Ministry) Educating each other (Discipleship) You won t want to miss this!

A complete list of their names and offices will be listed in the newsletter after installation of officers in November. Lois Berndt offered an illuminating program close to the hearts of many women around the world, entitled Poverty and Possibility. Viva Lelm was recognized as our 2017 Jewel of a Woman. Congratulations Viva and Thank You for all you do to inspire our participation in UMW and our Church. Viva was acknowledged with other Jewel of a Woman honerees at the Eastern Sunrise District in September. We will honor her again during UMW Sunday early next year. The countdown to Bazaar 2016 is on! It s Saturday, October 15 th from 10:30am to 1:30pm. Please add your name to the lists of Items Needed and Volunteers Needed in the narthex. This yearly fundraiser is our opportunity/ challenge to raise money for our UMW Mission Pledge ($3200), plus add to the General Fund of Evergreen UMC. We have a blessed reputation of offering a welcoming atmosphere to the Community for a pleasant afternoon of dining, fellowship, and shopping. Traditionally, we ll be offering our famous Chicken Huntington with all the trimmings for our luncheon as well as BBQ. Our Bake Sale is always successful, along with our home made canned jams, jellies, candies, pickles, etc. We welcome all of your efforts. It s been noted that perhaps 80% of your tasty homemade items are scooped up in the first 20 minutes of Bazaar! We are absolutely delighted to announce that DONUTS will be offered for sale this year. To participate in donut making, sign-up in the Narthex. Merle and Jean Rubish, along with their merry band of workers (perhaps, including you) will have fun creating and bagging the mouth-watering delights that draw so many people to our Bazaar. There will be Sewn Creations and Crafts for sale. Also, we ll offer a Grandma s Attic offering gently used decorative and household items. Marjo Johnson has volunteered to offer her skills of product display and salesmanship which will ensure a pleasant shopping experience for our patrons. This year UMW has decided to offer Grandma s Attic Items on terms of a Freewill Offering Basis. This has proven very successful for other churches. Let s pray that it will be that and then some for our church! All of us, working together, are needed to make our Bazaar a Success! We had several persons go to the nursing homes to visit or work on gardens and also Take What You Need posters were hung up around town. Give yourselves a pat on the back job well done!! OCTOBER 29-30, ALWAYS looking for more involvement. We have made the decision to donate our hands-on mission to the Spirit Lake Ministry Center working with Mike and Libby Flowers, to fulfill the theme of the 2016 Annual Conference which is Living Generously; Unleashing God s Gifts. This year s offering, 10,000 Hours Miracle Offering has both a hands-on and financial component. We are invited to live generously by investing our time to impact lives through our conference ministries. The hope is to have 10 people from each church pledging 10 hours of service to one of the conference ministries and to raise $100,000 to fund 10,000 hours of Internship. A sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board. On site housing is available. The project will be determined by how many hands we have. This year, we ll be taking a Free Will Offering on items purchased from Grandma s Attic. If you have questions regarding donation or questions in general about the Bazaar, please contact UMW President, Fern Bailey. Please have all sewn or crafted donations to the church by Tuesday the 11 th, if possible. We re anxious to see your handiwork! Our Fall Bazaar benefits many mission projects around the world as well as right here in our community. We hope that you will include the Bazaar in your prayers. Our Bazaar flyers are ready for distribution and can be picked up at the church. Please think about where you might personally post a flyer -- at your workplace, your apartment, your bank, area stores, the Laundromat, etc. Advertising gets results particularly this year after changing the date of the Bazaar to the middle of the month as opposed to the end of the month. And don t forget to tell your friends, neighbors, and relatives about the Bazaar. Thank you for all your help! 7 Evergreen United Methodist Church Page 7 Pastor s Ponderings From August 29-September 6, I had the privilege of attending the Global United Methodist Clergywomen s gathering (and celebration of our 60th anniversary of ordaining women), the World Methodist Conference, and the World Methodist Council meeting. It was an amazing whirlwind of meetings, fellowship, connection-building, learning, and of course worship. Worship was undoubtedly my favorite part of the week as Methodists from all over the world gathered to sing and worship in various languages, while being challenged by some of our Methodist tradition s best and most challenging preachers and teachers. I was also gifted with the opportunity to help lead parts of our worship services, as I helped coordinate volunteers for various skits I took part in, as directed by Ana and Debora Correa, sisters from Peru who helped us to create meaningful messages and themes in worship using stunning visuals and creative props. It was unlike anything I ve been a part of before, and I found myself in awe watching these amazing women share their gifts of theatre, music, and drama in worshipful ways. I wish I had the words to summarize how incredible this time together was in an article of this length. Yet instead, I ll say again how amazing it was to be gathered with this body, and to get to meet and reconnect with so many people from around the globe. Our theme for the week was One One God, One Faith, one People, One Mission. Together, as Christians in the Wesleyan tradition from around the globe, we spent the week learning and engaging on topics relating to how we are One and how we have more we share in common in our faith and our God, than apart. As a new member of the World Methodist Council (made up of member churches from 80 different Wesleyan traditions in 133 countries), one of the ways I have committed to living that out over the next several years, is to take part in the World Methodist Council s standing committee on Ecumenical Relationships. As a committee, we work to promote the unity of Methodist witness and service as a part of the global Christian movement. I am not entirely sure how that work will look in years to come, but I am thrilled to be a part of it, and to be taking Evergreen UMC with me as I do so. As I begin this new role as a representative of United Methodists from the Dakotas, I give thanks to you for your support and prayers, and thanks to Bishop Ough for the invitation to be a part of this important work. As I learn more and get deeper into this new work I get to be a part of, I look forward to sharing more of my journey with you. In Service Together, Pastor Jen Tyler Pastoral Letter
