2 Grow Page 2 Evergreen United Methodist Church May, 2017 Adult Sunday School Announcement By Jean Freden Thank you to all of you who participated in the Adult Sunday School Class. A big thanks to all of you who prepared and presented the lessons each week. The class will not meet in May but will resume again in September. Children s Sunday School News The last class in our Sunday School year will be May 21 st. This year has gone quickly and we have enjoyed time with the kids. They have been a great group! Wishes for a funfilled Summer. Summer Music Volunteers Needed As summer approaches and we all plan our week-end outings, Music Ministry is asking for volunteers to be available to play for a Sunday service. We usually have all of the Sundays covered but there is that rare occasion when none of the regular accompanists will be in town. If you would be willing to play for ONE service, please call the church office ( ) and leave your name. You will be greatly appreciated! Pastor Paul Lint, camp director from Wesley Acres Camp visits Evergreen to encourage all to attend a church camp this summer. Scholarships are available. Stop in the church office with questions. Camp Sunday was April 23. Monthly Offering: Totals through April 23 $14, Monthly Need: $19, Noisy Bucket Offering: $ Congratulations, Graduating Seniors! 3 Care Evergreen United Methodist Church Page 3 UMW News - Call to Community By Denise Eastin UMW members from Evergreen, along with UMW members from other area churches enjoyed fellowship and refreshed themselves in the Spirit by attending the Eastern Sunrise District Spring Focus Meeting, on April 22nd at the UMC in Lisbon, ND. It was a satisfying morning of inspirational learning and worship. Our Spring Bake Sale is almost upon us --May 6th from 9am to 11am. There s been some good sales on baking supplies recently, so here s hoping you were able to take advantage and will be donating your creations to this UMW fundraising event. Please label your baked goods/candy/jams & jellies/snack treats and leave them in the Fellowship Hall for pricing starting on Friday, the 5th (after 1 pm, please). Last year our Bake Sale was a rousing success for UMW with $851.35, and another $ in free will offerings from our shoppers for coffee and cinnamon rolls. These monies went directly toward UMW mission projects. If you can, won t you participate in this year s event? And never forget the power of your prayers for the success of this fundraiser and the ripple effects it can have in the lives of women and children in our country and around the world. Love Ribbons will be available before church service on Mother s Day, May 14th. For a donation of $1, you can show your appreciation and love for the women (and men) in your life, with the ultimate goal of benefiting women and children s mission projects here in our Conference (the Dakota s). On that note: do have a few, or more, Love Ribbons tucked away at home? As UMW members, we re encouraged to Re-Use and Recycle won t your consider returning your Love Ribbons to the Church Library? There s a small see-through plastic box on one of the UMW Reading Program shelves waiting for Love Ribbon returns. Which leads to: Have you started to check out books from our church Library to fulfill your commitment to the UMW Reading Program? We have quite an array of titles for women of all age groups. Our reading lists must be submitted to Program Resources Coordinator, Lois Berndt, by mid-august, so it s time to get reading. Our next general meeting of UMW will be held Thursday, May 11th, at 7pm, with Hope Circle hosting. Alinda Bassingthwaite will present the program, entitled Mothers in Action. 4 Page 4 Evergreen United Methodist Church May, 2017 Evergreen Mission News Anderson s Return to Albania Thank you Evergreen friends for your prayers and gifts to us for our mission trip to Albania November, Nathan and Cydil Waggoner, World Gospel Mission missionaries have invited us to return to Albania to help fill the gap while they are gone. They will be on home ministry assignment in the US, June through September. We return to Albania June 12 and stay through July 31. We are excited to return to this beautiful country. What will we be doing for the seven weeks we are there? We anticipate the following: Living in the village in the Waggoner's house. Attending weekly worship, men's and women's Bible studies in the village. Mentoring youth and young adults. Participating in 2 weekly children's clubs. One in the village where we live and one in a neighboring village. Peder, facilitating high school/young adult weekly Bible study. Bonnie, teaching a group of young ladies to sew during the weekly girl s fellowship. There are 3 treadle sewing machines that have been in storage that we hope to utilize. We will put the sewing kits to use we took in November. Thank you again, to those who donated sewing kits. We will be investing in the future of Albania through the children and youth. HOW CAN YOU HELP? INVEST with us in Albania: PRAY for us as we prepare to return and while we are in Albania. PRAY for the church in Albania to grow and remain faithful in the midst of opposition in a primarily Muslim culture. Protestant Christians are less than 1 percent. INVEST financially with us in this ministry. You may give tax deductible donations to us through Evergreen UMC by stating with your donation that it is for Anderson s Albanian mission. Or you may give us a donation directly. If you would like to get updates from us while we are gone, please let Bonnie know your address. Psalm 92:14,15 is our prayer. (I don't know if we are "old" yet but we are gray.) They will bear fruit even when old and gray; they will remain lush and fresh in order to proclaim: "The Lord is righteous. He's my rock. There's nothing unrighteous in him." Peder and Bonnie Anderson Pastor: Evergreen Staff ( ) Administrative Asst: Youth Programming: MISSIONS NEWS - May 2017 Individual Oatmeal Packets Needed for May One Thing 675 Items Collected in April The Back Pack Project is always in need of donations. In August 2013, the Missions Committee embraced the idea of One Thing which represents the collection of one designated item each month for a worthwhile cause. Our main goal since the conception of the idea has been to collect food items that are used during the school year in the Back Pack Project. This program sends easy to fix food items home with grade school age children each Friday to supplement their diets for the weekends when they do not receive school meals. Look for the totes in the Fellowship Hall for your donation. During the month of MAY the ONE THING collection is: INDIVIDUAL OATMEAL PACKETS Thank you to everyone who has helped with donations to the Back Pack Project, during the month of April, we collected 652 granola/cereal bars; 12 crispy treats; 10 boxes of macaroni and cheese; and 1 can of spaghettios. Items that could not be used by the Backpack Program are donated to the Richland-Wilkin Food Pantry. Thank you for your support of this ministry!! For it is in giving that we receive. 7 Pastoral Letter Evergreen United Methodist Church Page 7 Christ Is Risen! Alleluia! In the northern hemisphere, we are fortunate that Easter comes around the same time as spring begins to arrive each year. With springtime, comes an abundance of signs of new life all around us. The birds are returning home, building nests, and chirping with joy. The grass is turning green, and will soon require trimming (if not yet). Before we know it, the leaves will be in full bloom on the trees around us, and yes: even those pesky mosquitoes will return to remind us that all of creation has sprung to new life. As we see new life in nature around us and celebrate the new life of Christ in worship, so too are we celebrating opportunities of new life in our community. About the time you receive this, our season of 40 Days of Prayer at Evergreen will just be wrapping up. It was no accident that our 40th day concludes with a prayer recommendation I hope we will carry with us well into the future: for An outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and spiritual renewal. One of the many ways we are seeking spiritual renewal here at Evergreen, is by inviting God to lead us in our individual and communal lives. As we seek to live into new ideas and possibilities God may have in store for us, we are first planning to ask God to help us to let go of that which is holding us back. As we do this together, we will be holding a Service for Healing, Hope and Courage during worship on Sunday, May 7. This service will be a time for us to pause together before summer comes, inviting and claiming renewed hope and healing from this point on. Perhaps you need healing from particular hurts in your life. Perhaps you can think of ways we as a congregation have fallen short of living fully into God s commands to love and care for one another and our neighbors around us. Perhaps you are seeking renewed hope and energy around the ministries we seek to offer here at Evergreen. Wherever it is in your life that you need renewed hope and an opportunity for healing, this service is for you. Our District Superintendent, Rev. Randy Cross, will be with us as together we will seek to reflect on and let go of the pain, brokenness, and hurts in our lives. Our goal is to leave with increased courage to move forward into a life of hope as we seek to embrace, and be a part of, the new life popping up all around us. I hope you will join us for this unique, powerful, life-giving opportunity to worship as we turn over that which holds us back to God, who leads us forward. In Christ, Pastor Jen
