1 The Journey April 14, 2017 A weekly e-newsletter from Mandeville s First Baptist Church to keep you in the loop What you believe about your future controls how you experience your present. In Making Sense of God, Tim Keller asked his readers to imagine two women of the same age, the same socioeconomic status, the same educational level, and even the same temperament. Both are hired to do the same job and are told, You are part of an assembly line, and I want you to put part A into slot B and then hand what you have assembled to someone else. I want you to do that over and over for eight hours a day. You put them in identical rooms with identical lighting, temperature, and ventilation. You give them the very same number of breaks in a day. It is very boring work. Their conditions are the same in every way except for one difference. You tell the first woman that at the end of year you will pay her $30,000. You tell the second woman that at the end of the year you will pay her $30 million. After a couple of weeks, the first woman will be saying, Isn t this tedious? Isn t it driving you insane? Aren t you thinking about quitting? And the second woman will say, No. This is perfectly acceptable. In fact, I whistle while I work. What s going on? You have two human beings who are experiencing identical circumstances in radically different ways. What makes the difference? It is their expectation of the future. To be sure, this illustration is not intended to say that all we need is a good income. If that s what you get out of the story, then you have missed Keller s intent. What this illustration shows is that what we believe about our future completely controls how we are experiencing our present. We are incredibly hope-based creatures. The writer of Hebrews encouraged his readers to keep their focus on the hope that they had in Christ. After they had become enlightened by the truth of the gospel, they endured the hard struggles of life while sometimes publicly shamed and afflicted. They had compassion on their fellow brothers and sisters who suffered loss. Even when their enemies took property from them, they focused on what they had in the future in Christ (see Hebrews 10:32-39). The only way anyone can overcome the difficulties, sufferings, and tragedies in life comes in faith resting on the ultimate provision through Jesus Christ. Let me be clear. You must go farther than simply accepting the facts about Jesus His virgin birth, His living a perfect life, His death on cross, and His resurrection. You must believe these important truths AND receive Jesus into your life by faith. This means turning from your sin and turning to Christ. When you have your hope in Jesus Christ, then you can live each day of your life on earth looking forward to your glorious future. When you place your faith in Jesus Christ, you can face life head-on knowing that God has not forsaken you and that He will ultimately bring you to an eternity of joy and victory. If you have never placed your faith in Jesus Christ by welcoming Him into your life, I urge you to do so today. And when you do, let another believer know so that you can celebrate this together and then share it with the church. I m glad to be your pastor. Because of Jesus, Ken Schroeder Follow me on Check out kenschroeder.net Like our church Facebook page at Mandeville s First Baptist Church

M I S S I O N A R Y F O C U S If you really need a reason to spread the Gospel, there s none more compelling than the fact that Jesus commands all believers to tell all the world the Good News. Before returning to Heaven, Jesus told His disciples to Go and make disciples of all nations. Scholars dubbed this command as The Great Commission, and so it is today. Our essential function as believers and followers of Christ is to further His Kingdom. Jesus came to seek and to save that which was lost (Luke 19:10), but how shall they believe in Him of whom they ve not heard, and how can they hear without a preacher? (Romans 10:14). We all play a crucial role in the battle for lost hearts. If you want to help get the Word to the millions of people who don t know Jesus Christ, consider a financial gift to Annie Armstrong Easter Offering (AAEO). The North American Mission Board (NAMB) uses offering funds to equip missionaries and church planters to reach the unreached in North America. Give online or call toll-free at to learn more about NAMB s mission to spread the Good News.
