Tom "Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be known to God." Phil. 4:6, NRSV Are you looking for a real, concrete way to measure your faith? To actually measure the level of your spiritual growth? Consider this. Less than three years after being elected Pope in 1978, John Paul II (formerly Karol Wojtyla) was met by a Turkish assassin named Mehmet Ali Agca. Agca drew out a 9mm semiautomatic pistol and shot the 61-year-old Pope four times. John Paul very nearly died. He lost threequarters of his blood to the wounds. However, he somehow survived, and spent weeks in the hospital recovering from his trauma. Upon his release from the hospital, the Pope thanked God. He thanked God not only for saving his life, but also, as Eric Metaxas records in his biography of John Paul, "for allowing him to join the community of the sick who were suffering in the hospital." Do what? Pope John Paul II, one of the brightest theological lights of the 20th century, thanked God for the chance to identify directly with the weak and infirm, because that's what Jesus did. Notice something about Paul's language in the above Scripture. Nowhere does he tell us to be thankful FOR everything that happens to us. Rather, he instructs us to never stop praying, and to do so with a spirit that remains thankful to God even when we'd be crazy to give thanks FOR the terrible thing that's happened to us! In other words, we can be thankful TO God, even if we're not thankful FOR what happens to us. That's an important distinction for you and me, as we consider the busyness ahead for each of us. Don't worry. Keep praying, and stay thankful to God. And you know what the reward will be? Verse 7 continues: "And (then) the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." The parenthetical is mine. The peace is from God. And it's a gift for our HEART and our MIND. Why worry? Why fear? When our hearts and our minds can to be entrusted to God this Christmas season, why would we entrust them to anyone else? May the peace that God wants for YOU, Dear Reader, be yours this month. In Joy, Tom
