The Lantern of Saint Christopher Lighting the Way for Christ July/August 2016 Volume CXLXIII Ruth s Reveries It has come to my realization that being an Episcopalian really suits my Zodiac sign. Via Media or the middle way intersects well with being a Libra who likes balance. And yes, I get that Zodiac signs are pagan stuff but I can identify with it, so there you go. (Call me Nancy Reagan!) [But then, I guess she summoned something else.] My purpose is not to push the Zodiac. However, I am touting balance, right across the board. We, as a denomination, are middle of the roadsters. We use tradition, Scripture and REASON to encounter the world around us over against our Christian belief system. Fortunately, or perhaps unfortunately, as Episcopalians we are WAY off the radar of life in many respects. We live in a world of extremism. Far right, far left, all the way up, all the way down, black or white. There is little middle ground. We live in the world of fanaticism. And if you do not believe that, just turn on the TV, or look at social media. Fanaticism is a belief or behavior involving uncritical zeal or with an obsessive enthusiasm. Philosopher George Santayana defines fanaticism as "redoubling your effort when you have forgotten your aim". The fanatic displays very strict standards and little tolerance for contrary ideas or opinions. We are created to be in balance, in body, mind and spirit. Why do we get blood work? (To make sure our blood chemistries are not fanatical! Fanatical blood results usually indicate we are not well. Most wise folks work to correct it. However, others chose to ignore it, and sometimes the end outcome is not so happy!) 1

As we look into the summer season, when many vacation and try to get away from the maddening crowd, perhaps we can take time to ponder what balance in our lives means to us and how we incorporate it day to day. If we do not find balance, why now? So often, we get stuck in a rut that churns our daily lives, like being stuck in a perpetual revolving door. It becomes so habitual that to find ourselves outside the spin makes us uncomfortable and out of sync. Yet, do we plan enough time for rest, play and recreation/re-creation in our lives of work and business? In what do we immerse ourselves? Do our habits lean towards balance or FAR one way or the other? This includes our TV watching, gaming, those we associate with, etc? Do these activities infuse balance or fanaticism in our lives? As Christian people, our role model did all He could to find balance. Jesus often went away to pray, get away from it all, regroup. How often do we frame our day s activity in prayer, striving for that balance; striving to create a loving spirit towards God, self and neighbor? This does not prescribe our living in our own little bubble, withdrawing from the world. In fact, this calls us to engage in the world in a fashion that helps to re-establish balance. It negates complacency, or the numbing effects of being exposed to violence and social injustice which we are fed in a constant and immediate fashion. I was sent an the other day which reminded me about the history of fanaticism over time. Here are a couple of quotes: Very few people were true Nazis,' he said, 'but many enjoyed the return of German pride, and many more were too busy to care. I was one of those who just thought the Nazis were a bunch of fools. So, the majority just sat back and let it all happen. Then, before we knew it, they owned us, and we had lost control, and the end of the world had come. 'The hard quantifiable fact is that the peaceful majority, the 'silent majority,' is cowed and extraneous. 'Communist Russia was comprised of Russians who just wanted to live in peace, yet the Russian Communists were responsible for the murder of about 20 million people. The peaceful majority were irrelevant. We live in a world immersed with fanaticism. We can t escape it. However, we can bear witness to the need for balance, living in love, care and concern, remembering history, being engaged and praying without ceasing. It is a scale by which we will be measured. 2

Book of Ruth Study with Jeannette Mukarukundo Recently, Jeannette came to me indicating that when she was in Rwanda, as a widow with children post war, her life was not easy. Life is not easy for many women who are widows. One of the things that she found helpful was studying the Book of Ruth in depth with other widows. The journey in the life of Naomi, Ruth and Orpah is filled with their challenges, survival and hope. Jeanette subsequently has developed the Naomi Foundation in hopes of connecting widows for mutual support. Please join us on Saturday July 9 at 1 pm to begin study of this book. Invite other friends and widows to join in this discussion. There will be light refreshments served. WARDENS WORDS Deb Snavely Summertime is traditionally a slower time in the church year. This year is no different but we still have a few things to report. The Vestry is putting some effort into improving our church facilities for our newest youngest members. During clean-up weekend we will be sprucing up the Nursery downstairs. The ECW has graciously agreed to provide a new modern crib and mattress for use by our little ones. This new bed will replace one that has been there for many years and was no longer up to modern code. If anyone has any crib sheets or a mattress pad they would like to donate to the cause it would be a big help. Crib bumpers and the like will not be used as they are considered a safety risk. As soon as it gets in on backorder we will be installing a Koala baby-changing table in the upstairs Men s room. This will enable our fathers to take care of diaper duty with their young ones without having to go downstairs. St. C s has been accepted into the Recasting of Assets program sponsored by the COCL and ECBF. This 18-month program aims to help congregations establish and maintain faithful, effective and lifegiving ministries. Hopefully somewhere in there we will also find ways to be more financially independent as well. Thanks to David Manship for agreeing to take the leadership of this group. We will be letting you know more about the details of this program as we get them. We will be looking for 4-6 volunteers to be members of the core group for this important endeavor. Have a great Summer! Deb Snavely Senior Warden 3

WORSHIP MINISTRY Toni Olgeaty Today, more than ever, we should be attending church, worshiping our God, and walking the path the Lord has designed for each and every one of us. I want to share this prayer with you in light of the continued sadness in Orlando. God of mercy, we come to you with broken hearts, with tears, and with a confusion of emotions. We ask that your loving presence and your peace be with the families and friends of the dead and the wounded in Orlando. We know there is no restoring what has been taken away, but we also know by the example of Jesus, that wounds can be our pathway to grace and redemption. Let this be the way of those who suffer most this week. Let their loss find compensation in hope and let their despair find a Balm in communities that encourage and support each other. We also ask that your assurance and your peace be among those who will continue to participate in LGBTQ Pride festivals this month, knowing that some will be in fear as they try to lift themselves to a spirit of celebration and affirmation. And, we ask that your wisdom, your grace, and your humility continue to be with your church as we work toward a greater fulfillment of our baptismal covenant, which challenges us to seek and to serve the Christ in all people. May moments of tragedy serve as the foundation of new bridges and new expressions of love in your glorious Creation. Amen I realize the tragedy in Orlando happened last month, but we cannot, as Christians, just forget what happened and not worry about it happening again. If ever we needed to pray for comfort, strength and protection, it is now. So far, schools were not safe, marathons were not safe, churches were not safe, subways and nightclubs were not safe, not to mention all the unsafe places in Europe. Let s pray to the Lord that this all ends. HEALING MINISTRY Toni Olgeaty At the risk of sounding like a broken record (Good heavens, I just realized that this is a statement that might not be understood any longer) but this church is a caring church. This church is a loving church. This church is one that prays for those in need, those who are ill, those who suffer addiction, those who suffer from abuse, those who are financially in need, those who have no home to go to, those who have no food to eat, those who have suffered the loss of loved ones, and those whose faith is compromised. There are many other reasons for prayers in addition to this list, but what I am getting at is the importance of prayer, and the fact that St. Christopher s provides a separate service which serves to answer this need for prayer. Join us on Tuesday s at noon, or come to the back of the church to the Healing Station during Communion on Sunday mornings. There will always be someone there to lead you in prayer. You do not have to say why you or a family member or a friend may need a prayer, just that someone does. JESUS HEARS OUR PRAYERS AND HE ANSWERS THEM! 4

Do you need proof? I am your proof. I had Stage IV Cancer 16 years ago I am still here. I currently have terminal cancer, should have had 1 to 2 years life expectancy. I have once again passed my expiration date. I have been receiving palliative treatments for well over two years I am still here. The cancer has begun popping up in other places now, so low and behold, the Lord has provided for the development of a new drug which will enhance the one I am currently on it is an oral form of chemo-therapy, and just in time! I do not know if this will work or not, but I do know that I am blessed. The Lord is with me; and He is listening to all our prayers; and is answering each and every one of them. Sometimes we do not realize that a prayer has been answered, but I am fully aware that so many have been praying for me, and I am your proof that our prayers are answered - if you need proof. We have so many in our lives that need our prayers. Please join us for our Healing every Tuesday at noon, or come to the back of the church on Sunday s. ECW Episcopal Church Women Judy Brainard Only a few more weeks and our group of 16 will be going to see the Downton Abbey exhibit at the Taft Museum on July 9. We will be leaving the church at 10:30, eating lunch at the Museum Café at noon and touring the exhibit at 1:30. I will be contacting the participants as to carpooling, etc. before the date. Our funds have been used to purchase a baby changing table for the men s room and a crib and mattress for the nursery. It is so nice to see that we can effect improvements to our campus, particularly since we are making them for our youngest members and their families. We ll convene again in September for an evening of fellowship and planning. Watch for the date. Have a pleasant summer. 5

FELLOWSHIP Mary Donnellan There will be a meeting of the Fellowship Committee on July 26 at l0:00 at the church. Everyone is welcome to attend. We will be planning a chicken casserole dinner and talking about other fundraisers and fellowship opportunities. Art from the Park Landscapes 2016 is a juried painting exhibition presented as a collaboration between B-W Greenway Community Land Trust and the Fairborn Art Association. The purpose of this annual exhibition is to heighten public awareness of local green spaces and the need to preserve them. It is also an attempt to foster interest in painting from nature. This year s exhibition will exhibit work that has been inspired by the Community Park Reserve and the Valle View Reserve. The opening reception will be July 10 from 2 until 4 PM. Awards will be presented at 3 PM. The show will also be open July 17th and 24th from 2 until 4 PM. Many paintings will be offered for sale. ICE CREAM SOCIAL July s Fifth Sunday Celebration will be an ice cream social right after church. We will have ice cream and other treats. Please sign up to provide ice cream, various toppings, and cookies for this cool event on July 31. Mary Donnellan OUTREACH by Marilyn Power The generosity of the St. Christopher family is a tribute to the outreach mission of giving not only the tangible & monetary, but giving unselfishly to those in need. To touch on a few: the talented ladies who quilt & knit, our St. Vincent volunteers, Fish donations, the Christmas project, our meal chain, and the outreach of Hayward s youth group. When I deliver Fish donations, they are so overwhelmed by our generosity. These wonderful people who operate the pantry are all volunteers! They especially need shampoo, tooth brushes, deodorant, soap, bath tissue, cereal, peanut butter and sugar. If you are interested in seeing their operation and a tour, the upcoming Fairborn Mayor s Forum will be held there Mon. June 7PM 1149 N. Broad St. I have a list of various Food/Fish Pantries for the benefit of parishioners who live outside of Fairborn, and want to donate locally. There is need everywhere! I will post that list with locations, phone # s and time of operation under COMMUNITY on our bulletin board. Please continue to save your aluminum pull tabs. We give them to the Springfield Masonic Home and they, in turn, donate them to the Shriner s Children s Hospital. Thank you bunches to those who pass them on for this worthy project. 6

When you are purging your children/grandchildren s books (baby through 13 yrs. old) since they have outgrown or no longer interested, please consider donating them to St. Christopher s. My cohort, Tammy Elliott, came up with feeding the mind, a project still in the works. We ll keep you informed when it s pulled together. Please check the St. C. s bulletin board now and then. I try to keep it current with local and surrounding community events. There are also postings of interest under St. Christopher s. Feel free to post items of interest. Ruth Paulus, Judy Brainard, Rick Incorvati, Amy Kopp, David Manship, Marilyn Power, Kathy Smith, Deb Snavely, Gail Stauffer, Andrea Haberecht; Excused: Mel Bigi. The meeting was opened with a prayer by Ruth+ at 11:40am. The first ten minutes of the meeting were designated for discussion of Carey Nieuwhof s book, Lasting Impact. The Minutes of the April 17, 2016 meeting were approved. (Motion: Brainard/Stauffer) Treasurer s Report: The Treasurer s reports were reviewed. The new QuickBooks software is not ready for use. Junior Warden s Report: Judy Brainard mentioned that two new pledges have recently been received. Reports: Amy Kopp: New greeter packets are available but more people to present them are needed. The nursery needs cleaning, sorting and a crib that meets safety standards. An indoor and outdoor facility and grounds cleanup event was scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, June 25 & 26. Andrea Haberecht: A request was made for a baby changing station in the men s restroom. The vestry was in favor of mounting a KoalaBaby folding changing station in the men s room if will there is adequate space. The ECW offered to cover the cost; Andrea will make sure it will fit and place the order. Outreach: Food collection bags for FISH were distributed this morning (the third Sunday of the month). Rector s Report: It s very important that a leader for the younger Christian Ed class be identified for the term beginning in September. Ruth+ spoke with Bishop Breidenthal; the diocese has a critical shortage of Supply Priests. Priests planning to take Sabbatical in 2017, are expected to engage a Supply Priest if they are able. In the event no Supply Priest is available, Morning Prayer may be held instead. Old Business: 9

Deb reminded the vestry that the driveway from Broad Street is crumbling in several areas. Dan has some asphalt patch that he will use to fill those areas but it is a temporary fix and a better solution will be needed sooner than later. There being no other business, a motion was made (Snavely/Power) to adjourn the meeting. Passed. The meeting was closed with a prayer led by Rick Incorvati at 1:05pm. Respectfully submitted, Andrea Haberecht Note: the minutes printed in the Lantern are from the previous month, after they have been reviewed by Vestry. 10
