1 The Lantern of Saint Christopher Lighting the Way for Christ June 2018 Volume CLXXIV From the Pastor Gregory P. Sammons + June, 2018 Summer time, and the living is Easy Almost all of us have heard this marvelous song from Gershwin s Porgy and Bess. It captures so well the hopes that we bring to the warmer months: an evening picnic in the backyard, some time to cultivate our garden, maybe a camping trip with friends at the lake. This season is our annual invitation to breathe deeply and to look with leisure and appreciation at the wonders God unfolds for us day by day. I hope that each of us has some of this experience of relaxing into God s kindness and provision for us, where ever these summer months carry us. I want the St. Christopher s family to know that these summer months will carry me away for quite a number of weeks. Margaret and I will be welcoming a new grandchild and spending time with family in Michigan and New York State. But this is not yet a time for farewell to St. Christopher s 1

2 Along with the excellent guest pastors who will be visiting and some well-planned Morning Prayer services, led by your own capable lay worship leaders, I will be with you on Sundays June 10 and August 19. Additionally, I will be keeping Tuesday office hours and joining in the Healing Service on June 12, July 17, and August 21. I have informed your Wardens that, in the event of pastoral needs, I will be glad to respond during the times I am in the Dayton area. If someone you love is being hospitalized or is in need of a visit, let them (or Kay in the office) know and they will know how to reach me. All of which is to say: although summer will take me away for a while, I will continue to hold the St. Christopher s family in my heart and my prayers. In the meantime, I encourage all of us to place ourselves in the capable hands of God s Holy Spirit during the summer. Just as in our gardens, where the power of sun, rain and warm soil can make dramatic changes overnight, so God s love infuses the darkness and silence to work out God s purpose for us. May we rest in God s promise with easy hearts this summer. Our faithful God, who brought Jesus out of the tomb, will also lead this beloved parish to new life. And may we find rest for our hearts every Sunday at St. Christopher s or wherever we may worship while on the road this summer. See you soon! Yours warmly in Christ, Gregory P. Sammons + Extended Supply Priest 2

3 FELLOWSHIP June 2018 Mary Donnellan TEA Put on your hats and join us for tea. If you don t have a hat, and I don t, put on an attitude as if you were wearing a beautiful hat! On June 20th, we will go to Colonial Manor Bed and Breakfast just north of Springfield for a delightful tea at noon. Incidentally, this invitation is for women and men, but men can skip the part about the beautiful hat! You probably read the menu in the May LANTERN. I have been treated to Debbie Goode s wonderful culinary work, and I recommend this experience. The cost is $25.00 plus tip which brings the total to $30.00 per person. I will take care of reservations and payment. Please reserve and pay me with cash or check by June 6. Please indicate on the sign-up sheet or by to me if you will be willing to drive. I will be driving, of course. We will leave the church promptly at 11:15. (** from the May Lantern: Host Debbie Goode will dazzle us with her culinary skills as she serves us tea, fruit cups, soup, tea sandwiches, scones, Devonshire cream, various preserves, and sweet breads.) AMISH LUNCH Another fun time will be offered for July 26. We will travel north of Bellefontaine for an Amish lunch in an Amish home owned and operated by Nancy and Mavin Helmuth. Either before or after, we will go to an Amish store that is run by a Hutterite family who are friends if mine. The store is like an old fashioned general store. The Harrises and their eleven children do a great job of welcoming and serving their customers. I have known the Harrises since they had only four children, and I know about the Amish lunches and dinners because Johanna Harris works for the Helmuths. This request will not be a problem for any of us, but they do ask (but do not demand) some degree of modesty. I am assuming that means no booty shorts and low cleavage. I just wear my normal clothes around these folks, and I don t get any stares or glares. On the way home, we can stop at Marie s Candies in West Liberty if people want to do so. Now here s the rub. As of this writing, 68 is closed part of the way. Toni and I had to be detoured about a million miles (slight exaggeration), and it took us almost three hours to get there. I hope that will not be the case, and we can go to the Harrises store before lunch. There is also an interesting farm market near by that Toni and I have visited in the past, but we had just better stick to the Amish store, the Amish lunch, and Marie s Candies for this trip. Here is what you need to know. We will leave the church at 9:00. The cost of the meal plus tip is $ There will be a sign up sheet in Christopher s Corner after the June tea. July 9 is the deadline for payment and reservations. You can me or sign up at church. WE HAVE TO HAVE AT LEAST TEN PEOPLE TO HAVE THIS LUNCH. I have taken the liberty to choose the menu. Knowing that many of you like a blander diet than I usually have, I have chosen the following: pan fried chicken, pork loin, red parsley potatoes, beef and noodles, green beans, broccoli salad, and both peach pie and sugar cream pie and wheat dinner rolls. Coffee, iced tea, and lemonade are offered also. If you have any suggestions for fun activities, let me know, and I will see what I can do about scheduling. Don t forget to sign up for coffee hour! 3
