Fifty years ago on July 25, 1968 Pope Paul VI promulgated his Encyclical Letter HUMANAE VITAE. Although this letter is both insightful and prophetic, it has not been well received by the universal church, including the clergy. In today s first reading we hear from the Prophet Jeremiah: thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, against the shepherds who shepherd my people: You have scattered my sheep and driven them away. You have not cared for them, but I will take care to punish your evil deeds. I myself will gather the remnant of my flock from all the lands to which I have driven them and bring them back to their meadow; there they shall increase and multiply. (Jer. 23:2-5). This encyclical address the important concern of the moral use of contraception in married life. It ultimately argues that the use of artificial contraception in marriage is immoral because it separates the unitive and procreative ends of marriage, both of which are necessary parts of God's plan for the institution and sacrament of Holy Matrimony. The year 2018 marks the 50th anniversary of the encyclical's publication, and its prophetic message is more timely than ever. Kyle, who belongs to the USA Midwest Province of the Society of Jesus, was ordained to the priesthood on Saturday, June 9th, at the Church of the Gesu in Milwaukee, Wisconsin by Most Rev. David L. Ricken (Bishop of Green Bay). Fr. Kyle, who served our parish last year as a transitional deacon, will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving with us here at St. David of Wales next Sunday, July 29th at the 9:30 a.m. Spanish Mass.
