2 IN OUR PARISH NATIVITY OF ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST S ince June 24 falls on a Sunday this year, the Church has the opportunity for a more intense celebration of the birth of John the Baptist, who is often described as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the bridge between Judaism and Christianity. More commonly, John is known as the "precursor" of our Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels report John's basic message: Repent, the kingdom is near at hand. One greater than I is coming. Though he was a wandering preacher who dressed in camel skins and ate grasshoppers, John's legacy is one of true royalty. His origins are similar to those foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah: "You are my servant, he said to me, Israel through whom I show my glory" (Isaiah 49:3). John's humility--"i am not he"--was surpassed only by that of his Lord Jesus, the humble servant who followed. QUESTION OF THE WEEK In what ways do you fulfill your baptismal call to be a prophet, announcing God s Good News to all? STEWARDSHIP BY THE BOOK St. Paul reminds us in the second reading that Christ died so that those who live might live no longer for themselves. What we give to and do for others, we give to and do for Jesus. READINGS FOR NEXT WEEK THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME 1ST READING Wisdom 1:13-15; 2:23-24 PSALM Psalm 30 2ND READING 2 Corinthians 8:7, 9, GOSPEL Mark 5:21-43 EUCHARISTIC ADORATION All are invited to contemplate, to adore, and to pray to Jesus Christ before the Blessed Sacrament every first Friday of the month. Hours of exposition are from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Adoration is a sign of devotion to and worship of Jesus Christ who is fully present to us in the consecrated host. Please sign-up online. As the Lord said to Peter the night before his Crucifixion: Could you not watch with me one hour? (Matthew 26:40) HOLD THE LOCUSTS The birth of John is much like the birth of Jesus. Neither mother expected to be pregnant (Elizabeth was very old, Mary was not married.) Both were announced by an angel; both were given a name by the angel (Luke 1:13 and 1:31.) All who heard about the births were amazed (Luke 1:66 and 2:18.) It should be no surprise that the two mothers got together to discuss these things (Luke 1:39-56.) Most likely, talking about their experiences helped them to believe what the angel had said. You might say Elizabeth prepared Mary to be the mother of the Savior. And years later John would help people prepare to accept Jesus as their Savior. Now the Church has always taught that saints are not just admired, they are to be imitated. So how do we imitate John? Probably not by living in the desert and eating locusts and wild honey. (I'll take the honey, but hold the locusts.) Let's look at a few of the things John is known for and how we can learn from them. John lived in the desert to prepare for his ministry. How do we prepare to serve the Lord? Have you ever gone on a retreat, not just because it was required by your school or job, but because you wanted to take time to be with the Lord? Many retreat houses have weekend retreats for those who can't take off work. The point of a retreat is not just to get away, but to learn how to pray or to deepen your prayer life. As we learn to pray better, we get to know the Lord better. That brings us to the second way to imitate John: Lead others to Christ. We need to know the Lord to bring others to him. With the power of the Holy Spirit we received in the sacrament of Confirmation, we can give good examples of Christian love, share our faith, stand up for justice, and encourage others to grow in faith. Like John, we may also meet resistance, but we can be confident that the Lord will be with us always. PLEASE PRAY FOR... Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. 5 AROUND THE ARCHDIOCESE CATHOLIC DIVORCE MINISTRY The Archdiocese of San Francisco has a special ministry for those men and women who have experienced the pain of separation and divorce. We believe that the Church has a rich treasury of people, Holy Scripture, tradition, and pastoral ministry on which it can draw to serve its members whose marriages end in divorce. We strive to lay open this wealth and make known Christ's abundant healing love so that all who suffer from separation and divorce might experience healing, reconciliation, and new life. We also recognize that separated and divorced people, through their vulnerability, suffering, courage, faithfulness, and patient endurance bear witness to Christ and his redeeming grace in the world. They are not mere recipients of the Church's compassion; they are as well, ministers of that compassion. The Archdiocese has several support groups that meet on a regular basis. As a member of National Catholic Divorce Ministry, I would welcome the involvement of your parish in this important ministry. For more information, please contact Ed Hopfner, (415) , Director of Family Life of the Archdiocese. FOR YOUR MARRIAGE ~ Father Al Grosskopf, S.J. RETROUVAILLE is an intense Catholic program designed to help troubled marriages regain their health. It helps spouses uncover or re-awaken the love, trust and commitment that originally brought them together. The program is highly successful in saving floundering marriages, even bringing reconciliation to couples who have already separated and divorced. Please contact Gus and Edda Rivera at (510) or go to retrouvaille.org for more information. ENGAGED ENCOUNTER is one of the approved marriage preparation programs available to couples being married in the Catholic Church. Engaged Encounter is an investment in the future--a weekend experience in which an atmosphere is created that enables each couple to concentrate exclusively on one another while free of the pressures and interruptions of daily life.
