2 The Second Sunday of Lent Gn 22:1-2, 9a, 10-13, 15-18; Ps 116:10, 15-19; Rom 8:31b-34; Mk 9:2-10 February 25, 2018 Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults Scrutinies by Fr. Peter Bosque... continued from... During Lent, our elect and candidates prepare even more intensely to receive the sacraments of Baptism (if unbaptized), Confirmation and Eucharist. In order to support our brothers and sisters on this journey of purification and enlightenment (other words for conversion and conforming our lives to His Image), we celebrate scrutinies on the third, fourth and fifth, Sundays of Lent. On these Sundays, we use special texts at the Masses of the scrutinies, as well as proclaiming different Gospels. These texts follow this pattern invoke all to pray; offer prayers of, and for, all the faithful; exorcisms (casting out darkness so as to become children of the light); laying on of hands, expressing our unity as brothers and sisters in the Body of Christ; an invocation of blessing; and a dismissal. The RCIA elect and candidates leave the Mass, and participate in their own prayer while the Mass continues for the rest of us, as we all anticipate the time when we all worship together at the one Table. Through these rites, not only our elect and candidates are instructed in the mystery of sin and the meaning of salvation, but all of us reflect on the Paschal mystery and Christ s sacrificing love. These rites mark our anticipation of receiving these people as our brothers and sisters at the Table of the Lord. On the Third Sunday of Lent We proclaim the Gospel proclaiming Christ the Redeemer as the living water (the Gospel of the Samaritan Woman)... A Samaritan Woman Came to Draw Water by Saint Augustine (circa 400ad)... A woman came. She is a symbol of the Church not yet made righteous. Righteousness follows from the conversation. She came in ignorance, she found Christ the Truth. He enters into conversation with her. Let us see what it is about, let us see why a Samaritan woman came to draw water. The Samaritans did not form part of the Jewish people: they were foreigners. The fact that she came from a foreign people is part of the symbolic meaning, for she is a symbol of the Church. We must then recognize ourselves in her words and in her person, and with her give our own thanks to God. She was a symbol, not the reality; she foreshadowed the reality, and the reality came to be. She found faith in Christ, who was using her as a symbol to teach us what was to come. She came then to draw water. She had simply come to draw water; in the normal way of man or woman.... more to follow...

4 Ministry Summary Deacon Patrick Wright Continued from: Beginning at St. Pius, I felt a yearning in my heart, a call to serve at an even deeper level, the diaconate, but dismissed it. Life was already pretty busy and I didn t see myself as a worthy candidate. God had other plans. In March 2007, I was seriously injured at work. It was during my recovery time, that God gave me the time and good health to listen to Him and to attend a men s Cursillo retreat, a time to reflect on my relationship with my Lord and to talk to some wonderful and faith-filled priests and deacons. It was then, I listened and realized that God was calling us, Elena and I to do more, to be more, to serve more. Elena attended the woman s Cursillo retreat the following weekend. The next few weeks, we talked and prayed, realizing that we were being called to the diaconate. As so began the journey. During the nine month aspirancy period, we learned that we needed to reduce our deep involvement in the ministries we loved, to allow ourselves to be formed, in the likeness of Christ. Following aspirancy, we entered four years of diaconal formation, comprised of formal theological studies, many retreats, practical and hands-on training in serving others, and continued service in our own parishes, as well as serving as a chaplain in each of the following areas for one year: prison ministry, hospital ministry, care for the poor and hospice. As a chaplain, we were called to serve the spiritual needs of all people. I served at the George Bailey Men s Detention Facility, Scripps-Mercy Hospital in Chula Vista, St. Vincent de Paul Center in Downtown and in-home hospice care through Kaiser. During this time, I continued to serve St. Therese as an Extraordinary minister, sacristan, lector and began conducting the baptism seminars, as well as serving on the parish council and liturgy committee. I was ordained to the permanent diaconate for the Diocese of San Diego in May Since that time, I have assisted and preached at Mass, continued with the baptismal seminars, but now, baptize children, continued service in the parish council and liturgy committee, assist with RCIA, assist/lead in funeral services and weddings, was a member of the welcome committee, which met with new parishioners, as well as co-lead the mental wellness committee. And, I serve the youth of St. Therese assisting with retreats. Beyond serving St. Therese, I have been on the spiritual ministry team for several woman s Cursillo weekends and am one of the deacons serving as a sacristan during the Steubenville San Diego Youth Retreat held each summer. From time to time, I am called to provide an ecumenical service, a prayer service at Father Joe s Village. I feel so blessed to be able to serve God and His people. This past summer, my work schedule changed dramatically, greatly reducing my level of participation in parish ministries. At the same, Elena was met with some health challenges, which compelled us to stay closer to home. So, we spent more time at our old parish, St. Pius X, where our children grew up. It felt as if God was calling us back. I met with Father Peter Bosque and Father Jay Bananal, Pastor of St. Pius, both whom whole-heartedly supported our decision. Early this month, we received a letter from the bishop, reassigning me to St. Pius. I will continue to serve as I did with St. Therese, but with some added bonus using my Spanish more frequently. We are very thankful and blessed to have served the people of St. Therese. There are so many memories and experiences that will remain with us and be shared with others. We especially would like to thank those families who welcomed us to St. Therese all those years ago. We will miss you. Thank you and God Bless.
