2 Page Two ST. JOAN OF ARC CHURCH Today s Readings: Isaiah 35:1 6a, 10; Psalm 146:6 7, 8 9, 9 10; James 5:7 10; Ma hew 11:2 11. Today the prophet Isaiah describes a desert that is parched and yet will blossom abundantly, and rejoice with joy and singing because the Lord is coming. And once God arrives, the blind, deaf, lame, and mute will be healed! These same transforma ons appear again in the Gospel. They are the signs of the Kingdom breaking in and Jesus tells the disciples of John the Bap st to carry this news to him, in prison. For Isaiah s people, for John the Bap st, and for us, the coming of the Kingdom is good news indeed! God is in the world, and in spite of our fears and feebleness, he is coming to save us. The world around us holds up different signs en cements to buy and spend and strive. It is a challenge to follow the advice of James, in the Second Reading, to wait pa ently in joyful hope and strengthen our hearts. The Church leads us on a counter-cultural path, for good reasons. At the end of the Gospel, Jesus explains that: no one has arisen greater than John the Bap st; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. The Kingdom Jesus is bringing will make even greater deeds and insights possible! How can we help to bring that Kingdom? What good news could we share and what healing and caring deeds could we perform as we wait? Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus! 6 Page Six St. Vincent de Paul News The members of the St. Vincent de Paul Society wish to thank St. Joan of Arc parishioners who so generously donated non-perishable food, grocery store gift cards, and cash and checks to our Thanksgiving food collection and distribution. Because of your donations, we delivered food to help feed 30 families including 49 adults and 63 children. We are also grateful to all of you for your generosity in giving through our Giving Tree symbols. St. Vincent de Paul has two ornaments on the Giving Trees in the church lobbies, a yellow star and a black scroll. Both ornaments request donations which will help us provide food or children s gift items for struggling families. Additionally, the second collection on December 28 and 29, will be taken up for our ministry. We thank you in advance for your contributions on that weekend. We are humbly grateful for your participation in all of our works of charity throughout the year and we wish all of you a blessed Christmas and a prosperous and healthy New Year. ST. 8 Page Eight RELIGIOUS EDUCATION OFFICE ST. JOAN OF ARC CHURCH PARISH Christmas Programs on Christmas Eve This year we will have two Children s Masses. One at 3:00 pm and one at 4:30. We will have the Christmas Play at both Masses so we need lots of volunteers to make this happen. We are hoping to get enough children so that we can have two completely different casts of players. Please make note of the change from past years. There will not be a Mass in the gym this year. We will practice Thursday December 19 at 4:00 pm. If a child wants to participate in either the 3:00 pm or 4:30 pm play please be sure that they are here for the practice and to get their costume and/or reading part. We need lots of folks to be able to staff two plays. Please call the RE Office if you have questions. Get On the Bus We wanted to let you know the results of your fundraising efforts from the summer VBS program. You may remember we raised funds for the organization called Get on the Bus. Get On The Bus brings children and their caregivers from throughout the state of California to visit their mothers & fathers in prison. Because of your generous donation through VBS, they asked if we would like to be part of a Get on the Bus day. We said YES! So last Saturday, December 7 th we hosted the Get On The Bus event. We are grateful to all the RE and Youth Families who came to help us welcome and serve these young people. It was truly a GIFT for all who participated.
