2 As I write this letter I am sitting in my living room in front of the TV and watching my beloved Detroit Tigers take on the Kansas City Royals on Opening Day of the Major League Baseball season. Opening Day should be a National Holiday. Children should be out of school, banks should be closed, and every American should be able to answer yes to the question Did you catch the game? the day after Opening Day. This is the best day of my life. Ask me in-person what I think about people who don t like baseball. Some would call baseball slow, filled with gaps in action, and boring. The chief complaint I hear about baseball is there is too much time when nothing happens. The pitcher catches the toss back from the catcher. He takes his glove off so he can rub the baseball and takes his hat off only to put it right back on. Now the pitcher is walking around the mound, picking up the bag of rosin, and appearing unhurried by the opposing team. The pitcher stands on the rubber, he reads the signals of the catcher, and one signal after the other, the pitcher shakes his head no. The catcher calls time-out and with gloves covering their mouths, the two players talk about strategy until broken up by the home plate umpire. It s been 2 or 3 minutes since the last pitch. What I ve described isn t illegal. That s the way the game is played. What baseball gives us in these little breaks is something beautiful: time for anticipation, time to answer a child s questions about the game, time to tell a story, and time to dream of the possibilities. While the pitcher is chatting with the catcher; while the batter calls time out to step out of the batter s box and take a few practice swings; while the game pauses, the people dream of what can happen next. My new and experimental hobby of fishing is much the same way. With every hook in the water, you dream and wait to see if the fish on the line is as big as the one in your dreams. Time built into life in order to dream, to anticipate, and to ask questions is a fair description of the forty days of Lent that ends this month. Every day brings us closer to Jesus arrest, trial, death, and resurrection, and be it on Sundays, or moments in-between, we are given an opportunity to dream of the Kingdom that is to come, and anticipate what God will do next. The story of Christ s life and our redemption story needs what I am going to call baseball time : time when we dream, we anticipate, we ask questions, and we wait to see what happens next.
