1 THE FLAME HOLY TRINITY GREEK ORTHODOX CATHEDRAL MONTHLY NEWSLETTER Volume 7, Issue 1 January 2017 THE MYSTERY OF THEOPHANY Father George Wilson Then, Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? But, Jesus answered him, Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness. Then, he consented. And, when Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him; and lo, a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased. - Matthew 3:13-17 (RSV) On January 6 the Church celebrates the Feast of Theophany (Epiphany), which was traditionally second in importance only to the celebration of Pascha for the first 300 years of Christianity. It was not until the late 4th Century when the Nativity of our Lord took the second position of importance in the Orthodox Christian yearly cycle of feasts. The Gospel text talks about the Forerunner, John the Baptist, as he insists that his role is diminutive. John by no means is doing and preaching unimportant things; but rather, he is fulfilling the prophecy from the Old Testament book of Isaiah. He is preparing the world for the coming of the Lord. The work that was accomplished by John the Baptist was crucial to prepare many people for the coming of the Messiah, the introduction of Jesus Christ the Savior. Notes from the Orthodox Study Bible tell us that "Jesus considered John's testimony important not because Jesus, the Son of God, needed to be validated by any human witness but because the people's acceptance of John as a godly man prepared them to accept Jesus as well." John was rebirthing people from the womb of the earth in the Jordan River. But, as John reminds everyone, baptism in water is not enough. We must also be baptized by the Holy Spirit, and that will be facilitated by Christ Himself. So, John is completing only half of what is necessary for the believer to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. On the day of Theophany, the Holy Orthodox Church celebrates the revelation of the Holy Trinity to the human race. This revelation reminds us of a very important theological concept: that the Holy Spirit is at work long before the celebration of His permanent descent to mankind at the Christian celebration of Pentecost. In the book The Orthodox Way, Bishop Kallistos Ware writes: In the Holy Trinity, the inseparable bond of love and mutual service is a reciprocal bond that God is never without. At Theophany, the Baptism of Christ, we see this mutual, reciprocal bond at work." When describing Scriptural accounts of the events in the life of Christ, people believe the notion that Christ acts in some events and the Holy Spirit acts in other events; but, this reciprocal union is always present. Bishop Kallistos writes that people often believe the notion: "Christ, it is said, comes first, then, after His ascension into Heaven, He sends down the Spirit at Pentecost. But, in reality, the mutual links between Jesus and the Holy Spirit are more complex and more balanced. Christ sends the Spirit to us, but at the same time it is the Spirit Who sends Christ." At the baptism of Christ, "Jesus comes up out of the waters of the Jordan, the Spirit descends upon Him in the form of a dove: so it is the Spirit who "commissions" Christ and sends him out to his public ministry." Bishop Kallistos 1200 ROBERT E. LEE BOULEVARD NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA FIRST GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH IN NORTH AND SOUTH AMERICA

2 concludes his comments by reminding us: "His title Christ or Messiah signifies precisely that He is the One anointed by the Holy Spirit." The oneness of the Holy Trinity revealed to all of humankind is celebrated at Theophany. With all major feasts the Church encourages us to prepare for the celebration and a new beginning. The Church constantly suggests for us to establish a personal motive of preparation in our prayer life. We prepare during Great Lent, during the Apostles Fast in June, during the Advent Lent, and on January 5, the day before Theophany. The message of Theophany is one of a new beginning. As we enter a New Year and as we celebrate this great feast, we are encouraged to prepare for a new beginning in Christ. John the Baptist preached this to his followers as he announced the public appearance of Christ. He encouraged repentance of sin, baptism in water, doing good works, and living in spiritual discipline. He recognized that Jesus was the anticipated Messiah, Who had come. John's teaching is a personal call for all of us to accept Christ, to "prepare the way for the Christ, make his paths straight" and to allow Him into our hearts. May the celebration of this beautiful feast of our Lord remain in our hearts and transform us into the spiritual being that we were created to be by enjoying the image of God in us and ever striving for the likeness of God to return to us by God s Grace. 3 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE JANUARY 2017 The arrival of 2017 presents an opportunity to review the accomplishments of the past year, renew spirit, and set goals for the New Year and for our lives. Moving forward we can learn more about our faith, praise the Lord in our daily lives, and increase the support for our Church. This past year efforts continued to improve and enhance our ministries, as well as encourage more involvement in the church programs. Greatly appreciated are the efforts of so many, who currently give their time to choir, altar, Sunday School, hymnology, GOYA, HOPE, JOY, Greek School, soccer, ECYM, Parish Council, chanting, and the many other ministries of our Church, along with making a stewardship commitment. Continuation of these efforts by everyone will assure Holy Trinity s growth in the New Year. The 2016 stewardship program was successful; and, in 2017 we hope to build on that by asking everyone that participates in some way at Holy Trinity to be on the 2017 stewardship list. The amount is a personal choice, but it is important to be a supporter of the church and its ministries, programs, and finances. We were very blessed to have the very uplifting and spiritual visit of His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios on December 17 and 18. We thank him for visiting and continuing his prayers for us. On Sunday, January 8, there will be the annual Epiphany Cross Retrieval Celebration at Holy Trinity. Everyone is asked to attend this beautiful celebratory event of the baptism of our Lord Jesus Christ and to support the Cross Retrieval swimmers and dove bearer. It has been my extreme honor to serve as your Parish Council president this past year as we worked for continual improvement of Holy Trinity. Thank you to Father and the Cathedral staff for their tireless dedication. I wish you all a healthy, joyous, and successful new year. Barbara Stavis Wolf Parish Council President SUNDAY FELLOWSHIP MINISTRY COMPLETES INAUGURAL YEAR The Parish Council and the community sincerely thank all, who sponsored the 2016 Sunday Fellowship Ministry. 4 ST. BERNARD ROAD CONSTRUCTION PROJECT FINALLY COMPLETED The Holy Trinity Cathedral family received a wonderful gift a few days before Christmas when St. Bernard Avenue finally reopened, marking the completion of the massive road construction project that began in June The City of New Orleans held a press conference on Wednesday, December 21, 2016, in front of the Cathedral grounds to make the formal announcement. Mayor Mitch Landrieu and New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board Executive Director Cedric Grant addressed the press as members of the Barriere Construction Company, City of New Orleans Community Outreach Manager Cheryn Robles, and Father George Wilson stood in the background. 5 METROPOLITAN ALEXIOS VISITS NEW ORLEANS WEEKEND BEFORE CHRISTMAS The weekend prior to Christmas is always busy as the Holy Trinity Cathedral community gears up for the customary activities that encompass special church services, Sunday Church School seasonal pageantry, and organizational gatherings. However, Saturday, December 17, and Sunday, December 18, were particularly fulfilling this year as parishioners welcomed Metropolitan Alexios to New Orleans. After visiting the Cathedral Montessori School on Saturday, His Eminence joined congregants for a delicious Lenten spaghetti dinner in the Hellenic Cultural Center. Later, he spoke of the importance of the Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church that met in Crete this past June, the building of the St. Nicholas Shrine at Ground Zero in New York, and the Metropolis Diakonia Center, where the summer camp is held. The next day His Eminence officiated at the Divine Liturgy after which acolytes were tonsured, the 150th Anniversary Plaque was dedicated, and Father George was elevated to the rank of Protopresbyter. Topping off the activities in the Cathedral was the annual Sunday Church School Christmas Pageant. It was followed by a community luncheon in the gymnasium along with presentations made to His Eminence by members of the Parish Council, HOPE & JOY, GOYA, and the Holy Trinity PTA. 5

6 NINE CATHEDRAL ACOLYTES TONSURED BY METROPOLITAN ON DECEMBER 18 Nine Holy Trinity acolytes were tonsured by His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios on Sunday, December 18. They included Pantelis Frezoulis, Jonathan Labatut, Michael Labatut, Pantelis Patselikos, Andreas Poulis, Nicholas Stokes, James Venturatos, John Wisdom, and Tommy Wisdom. Now, all Holy Trinity acolytes are tonsured! METROPOLITAN ELEVATES FATHER GEORGE WILSON TO PROTOPRESBYTER His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios proclaimed the times as the season of giving before surprising Father George with an early Christmas gift on Sunday, December 18, 2016, when he elevated him to Protopresbyter. The hierarch then asked the Wilson family Presvytera Harriet, Kleoniki, and Despina to join him and the newly elevated pastor on the solea. The Holy Trinity Cathedral congregation congratulates Father George on his promotion. AXIOS! PARISHIONERS ENJOY PERSONAL MEET & GREET WITH HIS EMINENCE 6

Also included in the basket was a fingerprint canvas depicting a fleur-de-lis and a Nativity icon that the children crafted for the Communion Breakfast. The fleur-de-lis canvas was painted with black and gold fingerprints from the HOPE and JOY members and its Director Vicki McCallef, as well as Father George.
