1 THE FLAME Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral Monthly Newsletter Volume 3, Issue 7 July 2013 NEW COMMITTEE SPEARHEADS IMPROVEMENTS FOR YOUTH PROGRAMS Introduction from Education, Cultural, and Youth Ministries Committee Chairperson Steven E. Psarellis Children are a family s pride and joy, treasured gifts from God. In most cases great detail and attention is given to their wellbeing, education, and spiritual life. As Orthodox parents you entrust our Church with the spiritual education of your sons and daughters. Equally, it is the earnest duty of our community to use its full resources to earn and keep your trust, to educate your children in the teachings of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and in the Orthodox faith, to help them become good citizens, and to encourage them to embrace our traditions. For within the gates of our Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral, your children become our children. His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios of Atlanta has been at the forefront of this effort, fighting for our children s spiritual education. To that end he instructed all communities in the Metropolis to implement an aggressive educational program, tailored to the needs and abilities of each parish, by creating and empowering an Education, Cultural, and Youth Ministries Committee. It is this committee and its workings that I shall introduce to you. Last month Father Maximos Pafilis formed our own parish committee, whose members come from all walks of life. They are educators, students, young professionals, and parents. Some, who once were involved in the community s youth programs, are now parents themselves. Others, who recently arrived and embraced the community s goals, are working hard to achieve them. We all understand the heavy burden of successfully completing this task on which so much depends. For this, we ask your support, patience, and guidance. As its name indicates, the Education, Cultural, and Youth Ministries Committee oversees and coordinates all community youth and cultural activities. HOPE/JOY, GOYA, Young Adults, Sunday School, Greek School, PTA, Hellenic Dancers, and cultural programs come under the umbrella of this new group. Individual organizations are still in charge of their own functions with planning and scheduling falling completely within their discretion. The committee facilitates their activities by offering financial and organizational support while implementing new programs to the extent that scheduling and resources permit. The committee already met twice and outlined a preliminary schedule for the Under the direction of Viki Moustoukas, the Youth Choir sang during Divine Liturgy celebrated Holy Saturday morning, May 4, Robert E. Lee Boulevard New Orleans, Louisiana First Greek Orthodox Church in North and South America
2 2014 year. Keep in mind that upon our first endeavor we did not seek to reinvent the wheel. Programs that ran successfully through the efforts of our past youth director will be continued and, hopefully, enhanced. A few immediate changes will be made in some programs such as Greek School. Also, cultural programs, in which all parishioners can participate, are being added. Below are initial topics and committee decisions that I wish to share: 1. Enclosed you will find a comprehensive enrollment form for both Sunday School and Greek School. Both will commence on Sunday, September 8. For convenience the committee decided that parents should have more time over the course of the summer to register their children for either or both. Enrollment will end on Sunday, August 25. Unfortunately, Chrysanthy Kalivitis will not return to teach Greek School due to family commitments in Greece. Our other Greek language instructor, Fay Kalergi, will schedule weekly classes for the children each Saturday and Sunday, as well as teach an adult beginning Greek class every Wednesday evening from approximately 7:10 pm to 9:00 pm and an adult intermediate Greek class every Monday from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. 2. The youth Vacation Church School is scheduled for August Please inform the Cathedral office as soon as possible, if your child will participate in the three day program. 3. Every effort is being made to increase GOYA participation. Maria Michailakis and Maria Patselikos graciously accepted the position to jointly coordinate the organization s activities for the upcoming year. The committee looks forward to more GOYANS attending the Metropolis of Atlanta Winter Youth Rally, December As an added incentive a surprise award for one or more members, who are currently in eighth grade or above and who fully participate in the youth programs of our community, is in the works. Stay tuned for news on this front. 4. The Hellenic Dancers are expanding their program to include year round activities in addition to their preparing for the annual Greek Festival. Be on the lookout for future announcements of their schedule. 5. Holy Trinity Young Adults were invited to host a function every quarter. The first event is a Barbeque on the Bayou chaired by Socrates Toras. It is slated for Saturday, August 24, 2013, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on the Cathedral grounds. Future plans will be decided at that time. 6. Dr. Nick Moustoukas was instrumental in securing an iconographer, who will host iconography workshops at our community September This cultural experience can be attended by young and not so young alike, so bring your children for a family event! 7. Dr. Cornelia Koniditsiotis, Viki Moustoukas, and Alex Tiliakos are making efforts to incorporate older GOYANS into the choir. Please encourage your talented children to come forward and begin working on hymnology. On behalf of the new Committee and the Parish Council, I would like to conclude this report by thanking Tony Pembo, the former Youth Ministries Director. During the past fifteen years his commitment to the children of Holy Trinity Cathedral was second to none. Regrettably, the formation of this committee, under the direction of the Metropolis of Atlanta, made the position of youth director redundant. Nevertheless, Tony is and always will be an integral part of our plans to better the youth programs. We know that we can count on his cooperation and input. In advance we thank you, the Cathedral Family, for supporting our efforts to create bigger and better programs for our children. 3 The Divine Liturgy: Part XIX The Memorial Service A continuing series on the Divine Liturgy by Father Christos Mars, who serves Annunciation Cathedral in Atlanta, Georgia The Memorial Service, although it can stand alone as a service, is often associated with the Divine Liturgy. Many faithful have experienced, as well as seen, a Memorial Service for which the kolyva, or boiled wheat, is prepared. The origin of the wheat goes back to the time of Julian the Apostate. In 362 he withdrew from the market in Constantinople foodstuffs prescribed for the day of the Great Lent, Clean Monday, and ordered that they be substituted with polluted sacrificial food in an attempt to enforce upon the people paganism of which he was an ardent supporter. St. Theodore suggested to Patriarch Eudoxios that he ordain boiled wheat, already called kolyva, as a substitute to Lenten food-stuffs taken from the market by Emperor Julian. Since then kolyva, connected with celebrating the memory of saints, were brought to the Church and were blessed by the Priest during Memorial prayers known today as Memorial Services. The kolyva symbolize the human body, which is nourished by and grows because of wheat. Christ also likened His divine body to a grain of wheat as it is expressed in the gospel of St. John, Except a corn of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it abides alone: but if it dies, it brings forth much fruit. (John 12:24). St. Paul said, That which you sow is not quickened except if it dies. (1 Cor. 15:36) A dead body is buried in the earth and decays just as a grain of wheat. From these things the Church received the basis to make kolyva. Early Christians expressed their concern for the repose of the souls of their beloved by works of charity and love and by personal and communal prayers. Some of these types of prayers included a gathering on the graves of the dead, or in the church, and the serving of a meal known as the Makaria, or Memorial Meal. Praying for the dead is a deeply rooted practice in the Church on the belief that the Church of Christ is constituted not only of her living members but also of her departed ones. The Celebration of the Eucharist, Holy Communion, is offered for the benefit of both dead and living faithful. A great biblical reference to this can be found in the Epistle of St. James, The prayer of a righteous man has the great power in its effects. (James 5:16). Since we have a better understanding of the meaning of the kolyva and why we do a Memorial Service, let us look at the hymns that are associated with it. If the Memorial Service is conducted during the Divine Liturgy, it should come right after the hymn Blessed be the name of the Lord which comes after the prayer behind the Amvo. The service begins with the chanting of the Eulogitaria, Blesseds. It is important to note that where this service appears in many books, there are four hymns that begin with the Eulogitaria followed by a Glory and a Now and forever. These four hymns are specifically for a funeral service. In fact, hymns two and three of the Eulogitaria make reference to the body of the deceased as well. Therefore, in the Memorial Service we go from hymn one to hymn four, and for our purposes in this article, I will do the same. One final note on the Eulogitaria, there are actually two sets. One is call the Resurrectional Eulogiatira, which are used every Sunday during the Orthros service, and they are also chanted on Holy Friday night.the other set is called the Eulogiatria of the Dead. We, of course, will focus on the Eulogiatria of the Dead. We begin with the first hymn, Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes. The choir of Saints has found the fountain of life and the door of Paradise. May I also find the way through repentance. I am the sheep that is lost: O Savior, call me back and save me. This hymn speaks to us as ones who are living, explaining to us that the doors of Paradise have been opened, and there we see Christ, who is the fountain of life. He calls us back to Him, as lost sheep, and
4 Continued from previous page through Him we are saved. The next hymn says, Blessed are You, O Lord, teach me Your statutes. Give rest, O God, to Your servant, and place him (her) in Paradise, where the choirs of the Saints and the righteous will shine as the stars of heaven. To Your departed servant give rest, O Lord, and forgive all his (her) offenses. This hymn speaks to Christ directly and asks that the soul of the one that is departed from us have a place of rest in paradise. May their soul join those of the saints and those who are righteous, and may it stand out as theirs did, like shining stars, forgiven them of all that they have done. This hymn is just as much a petition to Christ as it is for us, who are praying, because it reminds us that we do have a chance to be with Christ and for our souls to be like shining stars. The next hymn says, Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. The threefold radiance of the one God let us praise, and let us shout in song: Holy are You, eternal Father, coeternal Son, and divine Spirit! Illumine us, who worship You in faith, and deliver us from the eternal fire. This hymn talks about the Holy Trinity and it asks for its illumination on us, who are alive, that have faith to help us continue to praise God. The hymn also asks for us, who do this to be saved or taken away from the eternal fire, which is hell. In other words, if we have faith and believe, we shall not be condemned to the fires of hell, but rather we shall be with God in His heavenly kingdom. The next hymn says, Now and forever and to the ages of ages. Amen. Rejoice, gracious Lady, who for the salvation of all gave birth to God in the flesh, and through whom the human race has found salvation. Through you, pure and blessed Theotokos, may we find Paradise. This hymn is directed to the Virgin Mary, and speaks that through her willingness to participate in salvation i.e. saying yes to the Archangel Gabriel and bearing Christ we have found paradise through Him. Following this is the triple Alleluia, an ancient way to indicate that we are changing sections of music. Following the triple Alleluia, the Kontakion of the dead is chanted. This hymn reads, With the Saints give rest, O Christ, to the soul of Your servant where there is no pain, nor sorrow, nor suffering, but life everlasting. We ask Christ to place the soul of the departed in a place of rest, where there are no cares of this earthly life, but in a place where there will be eternal life, i.e. heaven. Following this is another set of four hymns that speaks directly to the person or persons for whom the Memorial Service is being conducted. These hymns are very straight forward. They read as follows, Among the spirits of the righteous perfected in faith, give rest, O Savior, to the soul of Your servant. Bestow upon it the blessed life which is from You, O loving One. Here, we ask Christ to give rest to our departed loved one. Within Your peace, O Lord, where all Your saints repose, give rest a lso to the soul of Your servant, for You alone are immortal. Again, here we ask Christ to have the soul in a place of rest. Glory to the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. You are our God, who descended into Hades and loosened the pains of those who were chained. Grant rest also, O Savior, to the soul of Your servant. We ask Christ to do as He did on Pascha Sunday, which is to save all those who were bound in Hades, for the soul of the departed, which is bring it out of death and give it life. Now and forever and to the ages of ages. Amen. Most pure and spotless Virgin, who ineffably gave birth to God, intercede with Him for the salvation of the soul of your servant. The final hymn is always to the Virgin Mary, asking for her intercession that the soul of the departed be saved and placed in paradise. Next, come the petition and prayers for the departed. I will focus on the prayer, as the petitions put us in the correct mindset to pray. The prayer reads as follows, O God of spirits and of all flesh, You have trampled down death and have abolished the power of the devil, giving life to Your world. Give rest to the soul of Your departed servant (Name) in a place of light, in a place of repose, in a place of refreshment, where there is no pain, sorrow, and suffering. As a good and loving God, forgive every sin he (she) has committed in thought, word, or deed, for there is no one who lives and is sinless. You alone are without sin. Your righteousness is an everlasting righteousness, and Your word is truth. For You are the resurrection, the life and the repose of Your departed servant (Name), Christ our God, and to You we give glory, with Your eternal Father and Your all holy, good and life -giving Spirit, now and forever and to the ages of ages. The prayer is self explanatory, as it asks Christ to grant remission of the sins o f the soul of the departed, and to give it a place of rest in His heavenly kingdom. Following this we chant triple Eternal Memory, the characteristic hymn of the Memorial service. And, with this, we conclude the Memorial Service. In Part XX, our last article, we will look at the Artoclasia (Blessing of the Loaves) and give an explanation of its meaning and why it is placed in the Divine Liturgy.
5 PARISH COUNCIL - COMMUNITY UPDATE SUMMER 2013 The Holy Trinity Cathedral Parish Council would like to update the parishioners on recent events, as well as the status of several ongoing repair projects. GREEK FESTIVAL 2013 Congratulations to our Greek Festival Executive Directors Ginny Zissis, Gail Psilos, and Petros Demarinis for a job well done. The final figures are still being tallied, but it appears to be a record year in both sales and profit. All of our hard working parishioners, volunteers, and support staff are to be commended for a great job. The Parish Council rehired Nancy Moore and her staff for the 2014 Festival and unanimously recommended that the Festival directors continue next year, if they are willing. EDUCATION, CULTURE, AND YOUTH DIAKONIA COMMITTEE This committee has been on the drawing board for over ten years and with the efforts of Father Maximos finally has "arrived!" Its function is to organize and oversee all the youth related activities, including HOPE/JOY, GOYA, Young Adults, Sunday School, Greek School, PTA, and the Hellenic Dancers. Under the chairmanship of Steve Psarellis, the committee has met several times and is compiling a comprehensive schedule for the entire year. Members include educators, Parish Council representatives, parents, and organizational coordinators. The Parish Council strongly supports the efforts of this committee and has made youth participation a priority. With the community's help and with the use of previously appropriated funds, the Parish Council hopes to finance all of the youth related expenses (camp registration, transportation, meals, local events, etc). If this is something you would like to financially support, please contact Father Maximos or Steve. COMMUNITY JANITORIAL SERVICES The Parish Council is aware of your concerns and is working to improve the services. AUDIT COMMITTEE At this time there is only one member of the audit committee. The parish bylaws, as well as the Uniform Parish Regulations, state that three members are needed to conduct an audit. Parish Council members are prohibited from serving in this capacity. The Parish Council has made inquiries but has been unsuccessful in recruiting additional members to serve on this committee. If you are interested and "qualified" to serve, please submit your name to the Parish Council for consideration. SAFETY ISSUES The Parish Council would like to remind all parishioners to be careful when using the stairs, the bathrooms, and the open area between the buildings, especially if you need special assistance. The kitchen area is always in use and not suitable for shortcuts to the parking lot or to gatherings. There are two ADA approved handicap ramps, and wheelchairs are available, if needed. Additionally, specialized medical equipment is on site. If you see or hear of a unsafe area needing attention, please inform any Parish Council member, the church office, or Father Maximos. SECURITY ISSUES Throughout the past few years there have been thefts of church owned items. These incidents have occurred inside the church, the Hellenic Cultural Center, the grounds, and the storage facilities. Additionally, random people have been found on our premises either loitering or soliciting funds. This issue is being addressed, and corrective measures will be instituted soon. CHURCH AND HALL REPAIRS Over the next several weeks to months, the church roof will be replaced, and selective repairs will be made to the hall roof. The church roof damage is a consequence of Hurricane Isaac and installation issues following Hurricane Katrina. At least five different contractors inspected the damage and gave recommendations. It was determined that the roof could not weather another storm without significant damage and needs complete replacement. With the help of Frank Nicoladis and Jonathan O'Rear (N-Y Associates), a job description was formulated, bids were taken, and several options were considered. The best option for the cost was to replace the roof using both new and used tiles. Additionally, eight smaller flat roofs will be replaced on both the church and the Hellenic Cultural Center. Following the roof repairs, the church stained glass windows will be resealed and the building waterproofed. The south wall of the hall will also be sealed and repainted with waterproof paint. The interior repairs of the church, including cleaning of the iconography, will begin once the exterior work is completed. The Hellenic Cultural Center upstairs classrooms have been reconfigured. The previous Icon Room is now the new Festival Storage Room. The Game Room has been divided between Room 210 and the Common Area. The old Game Room is now the Icon Room. All of the classrooms are currently being repainted, the sheetrock repaired, and the floors stripped and waxed. New ceiling tiles will be installed, as well as new light fixtures. As a new safety feature, both of the stairwell railings will be paneled to prevent accidental falls. Please be patient during these repairs and especially use care around the designated "work areas." Hopefully, the repairs will proceed as planned, and there will be no delays. Have a safe, happy summer! Nick M. Moustoukas, MD Parish Council President
