1 Emmanuel Episcopal Church 498 Prince Avenue Athens GA (706) Fax (706) Volume 47, Issue 7 July, 2014 FROM FATHER ROBERT E M M A N U E L E P I S C O P A L C H U R C H THE TOWER Dear Parishioners, Peace and all Good! I hope you are all well and finding God in the big things and the small things of your summer-time lives. I don t remember if I have written about change lately. Something is sparking a memory that I did awhile ago. I think I want to speak to it again because for whatever reason, good or bad right or wrong, change stirs things up inside people. Some are moved to great joy because of the ability to do and experience new things. For others, just when we think we finally have some stability in our lives and a little bit of control which we all like something changes and our worlds suddenly seem foreign and our days uncertain and we begin to fill with inner discomfort. Our reality is this: Life is Change and Change is Life. I would love for you to reflect on that for a bit. I think that people might be able to accept this notion even begrudgingly in their lives, but they still want that safe place where there is no change, where there is something that I can hold onto and know will be the same yesterday, today and forever. Lots of people think that place should be the church. In many ways it is and in many ways it just isn t, and in my opinion cannot be. We should be clear and say that change for change s sake is not effective living. When change becomes our goal instead of a means towards growth we might fall into a sense of sloppiness, because we perhaps act on mere whims rather than on following a path that will bring us as individuals and a community to reach our fullest potential and realize the best of all that God holds as possible for us. To resist change which is inevitable is to stagnate, to become stale, and to cease being fruitful. To will the will of God is to let go of our tenacious control over what is and allow what will be to come from God. It s the only way that can happen. (Continued on page 2)
2 VOLUME 47, ISSUE 47, ISSUE 7 7 PAGE 2 (Continued from page 1) It s been a wee bit surprising to see the different effects of our new addition on parishioners. I am filled with gratitude when I see how well the building works for our ministries. I am happy when I see how we have already been able to expand into new things and offer our space to the community at large. Some folks still find it overwhelming and thus unsettling. Others want the entire life of the church to be exactly the way it was in the church they grew up in 5 states and at least 8 churches ago. Uh oh. If life itself is change, we can grow through that with a willing heart and having the courage to hold onto the one constant the I Am who is God. The God within each of us is the Alpha and the Omega the beginning and the end all at the same time. God is all. Yet God is a living and a dynamic God who calls us toward growth, a life that unfolds, development, change and an evolving under-standing of what is to come. Let s strive to honor what was and is and be joyfully anticipating what is to come. Imagine new ways of finding where God already lives!!! 3 PAGE 3 THE TOWER MMANUEL IN JULY In the current issue of The Larger Circle, the 2014 newsletter of Eickhof Columbaria Inc, maker and installer of our own columbarium, Emmanuel is featured an illustrated article. HOLY GROUND IN A BUSY UNIVERSITY TOWN Emmanuel Episcopal Church Athens, Georgia Memorial Courtyard Since 1843, Emmanuel Episcopal Church has served a diverse community in the heart of this thriving university community. As part of a five-phase expansion project for the church, Eickhof Columbaria installed a custom-designed columbarium in the fall of The new memorial space provides a way for parishioners and their loved ones to remain connected to their church community even after death. It s always been the custom to have church cemeteries, but clearly you can t do that in the confines of the modern city, says Fr. Robert Salamone, Emmanuel s rector. And because so many people today are opting for cremation, having a columbarium truly serves a growing need. Eickhof Columbaria worked with landscape architect Josh Koons of Environmental Landscape Design to fabricate an elliptical-shaped columbarium with 466 niches, each 12 x 12. It is situated within a courtyard that also includes a labyrinth and small garden reflection space. The capstones, end caps and base trim were finished in Elberton Grey Granite, and the niche fronts were finished in polished Cambrian Black Granite. The design seemingly draws one into the embrace of God. It s like two arms encompassing and comforting those who mourn, says Fr. Salamone. It indeed feels like holy ground.
4 VOLUME 47, ISSUE 47, ISSUE 7 7 PAGE 4 AROUND THE PARISH CHAIR YOGA AT EMMANUEL Gain strength, improve balance, prevent falls, improve sleep! Emmanuel will have a chair yoga class for healing and relaxation. This class will be conducted standing and in a chair. The emphasis will be on strength, balance, flexibility and relaxation. Robin Johnson, the instructor, can individualize the practice if there is injury or other issues that are relevant. The class will meet Wednesday afternoons July 9 August 13 from 3:45 5:15 PM. Beginners are welcome. But, please help the course go smoothly by recognizing that it is a course, not a studio-type drop-in class. That doesn t mean you can t miss a class, but a beginner might be lost if they start class number three. Wear comfortable and stretchy clothes. Some people like a light cover for deep relaxation. Suggested donation is 35 per person with checks made to Emmanuel. Please come even if you cannot contribute. Bring your donation in an envelope the instructor will not know who is and is not able to contribute. The class will be held in one of our new ground floor classrooms. To register, or if you have questions about the course, call Robin at before 9:00 PM. CATECHESIS OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is the foundational program which Emmanuel offers our children ages We are in need of leaders in order to serve the growing number of young families in our parish. We ask that you consider taking part in this special week of training to see if this ministry is a good fit for you. The training is also a wonderful opportunity for adult spiritual formation. Brian Paul Freese, OP. This DVD in the A History of Christianity series is part four of a six-dvd series presented by Diarmaid MacCulloch, an Oxford history professor whose books about Cranmer and the Reformation have been acclaimed as masterpieces. In the fourth part of his History of Christianity, MacCulloch makes sense of the Reformation, and of how a faith based on obedience and authority gave birth to one based on individual conscience. Reformers of the Catholic Church are presented Martin Luther and Ulrich Zwingli as agents of great change challenging the status quo and presenting proposing a Christianity very different from what we ve come to know as Catholicism and Orthodoxy. Sunday, August 10 Let's Hear about Haiti! Our intrepid group of 13 Emmanuelites will discuss their trip to Limonade, Haiti where they helped paint the school Emmanuel has been supporting for over 30 years. They will talk about their trip as a whole and individuals will discuss their experiences as missionaries in this community. Q and A to follow. Sunday, August 17 Making Decisions with a Moral Compass Bob Bottoms will lead a discussion on how we make important as well as day to day decisions and suggest ways our faith might inform these decisions. This is similar to his recent and current work with the College for Bishops of the Episcopal Church. Sunday, August 24 Making Decisions with a Moral Compass A second session with Bob Bottoms Sunday, August 31 No Forum The Adult Faith Formation Committee seeks to offer programs of spiritual enrichment through exploration of Holy Scripture, Anglican tradition, and church history that deepens personal faith, strengthens community, and shares the Gospel.

8 VOLUME 47, ISSUE 47, ISSUE 7 7 PAGE 8 VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL Blast-Off Vacation Bible School was a universal success with over 60 children, 25 youth volunteers and 10 adults joining us for the week! We launched kids on a Mission of God's Love by focusing on kindness to others and outreach to our community. Community leaders came to speak with our group each morning, and the topics included fostering animals, feeding the hungry, being aware of bullying, and Emmanuel's own mission trip to Haiti. The children's principal mission project was to collect and stuff 500 lunch sacks for the Smart Lunch Smart Kid program. When John Becker sent the Food Bank van on Friday, the kids enthusiastically unloaded the items and cheered as they knew they would meet their goal. On the last day during our Cinema station, children and leaders worked together on writing their personal reflections of the week. One group wrote, It is important to treat others how you want to be treated. Let's go into the world with peace in our heart and enjoy the love of the Lord.
