Emmanuel Episcopal Church 498 Prince Avenue Athens GA (706) Fax (706) Volume 46, Issue 8 August, 2013 E M M A N U E L E P I S C O P A L C H U R C H THE TOWER FROM FATHER ROBERT Dear Sisters and Brothers, Peace and all Good! I thought I would just give a few updates as to our progress on campus or lack thereof! There used to be a saying in the spiritual life that the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. As we are attempting to move ahead with construction and renovation in anticipation of our Fall programs ramping up, there have been one or two setbacks. The biggest of course has been the rain. God has decided to bless us more than abundantly to make up for the drought we have experienced over the last few years. We may say a prayer of thanksgiving for God s goodness, but I have been telling God that he doesn t have to be so good anymore. The renovations to the Christian Connection are coming along very nicely. I think you will be well pleased with how that space is designed to be a center of formation and fun for our teens and teens to be. The large construction project has been held up because of rain and the inability to do site work because of ground that is just soaking wet. Oh and very muddy. When the columbarium was delivered last week, they tried running the truck along the side of the building and they sank. We needed to use the larger machinery to pull them out. Those poor gentlemen (two of them) had to carry/pull the pieces from the new parking lot to the columbarium site. They did it and had it pretty much completed in just a few days. It is very, very beautiful and when complete it will indeed be a place of rest and peace. The design of it makes me think that those who are inurned there are being held safely in the arms of the church until we are all changed. Two other pieces, if I may. You might consider this a coming attraction or at least the opportunity for me to explain my logic and reasoning behind some of what you will encounter in our new space. First, the chapel. It is beautifully designed and the heavy timber beams and woodwork are quite extraordinary. We believe the furnishings although simple will be comfortable and attractive as well. I have chosen a San Damiano cross to go into the chapel. It is a copy of a 12 th century Romanesque cross hand painted on wood from the Umbrian school. One of the features is that the Christ is alive standing on his tomb. This was the cross that spoke to St. Francis inviting him (Continued on page 2)

VOLUME 46, ISSUE 46, ISSUE 8 8 PAGE 2 (Continued from page 1) to go and rebuild or reform my church. In other words, renew your life and so then the lives of those you encounter the community of faith. Our chapel will be open for people (all people) to come from the world to reflect on their lives. To take that break during the day to pray and seek comfort or guidance. It would be my hope for those that come, that Jesus, present to us in word and sacrament and in the life of community, would somehow inspire us and speak directly to our hearts about how I might in fact renew my life in God and then go and repair or rebuild faith, hope, and love to the people in my life. My brothers and sisters, God does speak to us in a myriad of voices but also directly to our hearts and our souls. God does have a particular word for us alone. Through our prayer and reflection on the gift of God s love for us in his son Jesus may we heed his voice (as Francis did) and do the things he calls us to do. The second piece has to do with our labyrinth. It is modeled after the labyrinth built on the floor of Chartres cathedral in France. For the middle design, I ve asked them to create a Compass Rose for the center. The Compass Rose is the emblem of the Anglican Communion, and it is in fact a compass pointing out directions or a path that one can take. I ve asked them to leave off any N.S.E. and W. notation so that when one enters the circle after their journey in to the labyrinth, perhaps their intention during the walk will lead them to reflect (in their center) on a new or different path they can take as they walk out, a life changed a little bit. It s interesting, you know, that we can reach the center only if we walk the path. I am happy and very content to realize that most of all the new spaces we are creating have a spiritual or formative purpose behind them, even the columbarium. Spiritual healing, growth, prayer, recommitment to a life of faith surrounded by beauty all for the sake of holiness, is a good thing indeed! I look forward to seeing and meeting all of you there in one place or another as we grow together in the love of God. In his love, Robert THE TOWER IN THIS ISSUE From Father Robert 1-2 From the Director of Music 3 Vestry at Your Service 4, 12 Coming Events 5 Education for Ministry 6 August Calendar 7 August Birthdays 8 For the Whole Family: Faith Formation and Youth Retreat 9 Catechesis Training Director of Finance 13 Staff 13 Vestry 14 The purpose of The Tower is to inform Emmanuel s members of who we are and what we do as a faith community. 3 PAGE 3 THE TOWER MMANUEL IN PENTECOST FROM THE DIRECTOR OF MUSIC About the time the August issue of The Tower reaches your homes I will be boarding a plane for London, England. This is my first trip across the pond and I am thrilled to spend the first week singing daily services at St. Paul s Cathedral in London and doing the same the following week at Canterbury Cathedral. I will be travelling with the Cathedral Choir from St. Philip s in Atlanta where I am a member of the Cathedral Schola. Schola is a subset of the Cathedral Choir which sings Choral Evensong at St. Philip s most Sunday afternoons from September to May. English cathedral choirs are typically on vacation the month of August and visiting choirs have the privilege of being in residence for a week. A week of residence begins with Choral Evensong on Monday and goes through Sunday morning services, ending with Choral Evensong on Sunday afternoon. The choirs from St. Philip s make a pilgrimage to England about every four years and they were in residence at Westminster Abbey during their last visit. While in London we report to St. Paul s each afternoon at 2:00 to rehearse for a service at 5:00. Mornings and evenings are free for sightseeing, concerts, etc. Consequently, I will be absent from Emmanuel for three consecutive Sundays. I have no worries about the music with Dr. James Mellichamp playing the organ and leading the choir. James earned the Doctor of Music degree from Indiana University studying under the legendary pedagogue and concert organist, Wilma Jensen. He has worn many hats during his career at Piedmont College, most recently being appointed to the Office of President. In addition to his musical skills, Emmanuel is grateful to James for allowing us to use the parking lot across the street at Piedmont College during our construction. Needless to say, I am like a kid on Christmas morning with the new organ! Shortly after the installation an organist friend came in and played every possible sound combination for two hours while I walked around the church and listened. I get a little more comfortable with the organ each Sunday. Parishioners have likely noticed the wide array of sounds or the tonal palette as we say in organspeak. With 192 levels of memory the organist is able to execute unlimited changes of registrations (sounds), which can be particularly effective during hymn singing. Most of the sounds on the organ were there in its original design, but with the help of Walker Technical, I made some modifications to make the organ more conducive to playing Anglican liturgy. The end result is a virtual symphony orchestra under my fingertips! I have been both delighted and amazed at how much congregational singing has improved at both the 8:30 and 10:30 liturgies. When an organ can fill a room with sound it helps create a cushion for congregants when they are singing. The person in the pew does not feel as if they are singing a solo, and are far more likely to sing out enthusiastically. A number of people have asked how the organ sound is produced since it is not coming from the pipes. Walker Technical sent sound engineers to more than twenty churches which had E.M. Skinner and Aeolian-Skinner pipe organs that were built between the mid-1930 s to the mid-1960 s. Individual stops, or sounds, were recorded digitally and this computerized sound is reproduced through twenty-four speakers mounted in the Nave at Emmanuel. In a sense it s like playing a digital recording on a CD player. I return from England on August 19 and look forward to the fall season when choirs for both adults and children resume. I also look forward to being back on the bench accompanying congregational hymns and creating music for the worship of Almighty God. Sam

VOLUME 46, ISSUE 46, ISSUE 8 8 PAGE 4 AROUND THE PARISH VESTRY AT YOUR SERVICE: Get Out Your Calendars, Everyone The June Vestry meeting was highlighted by four reports: Erik Wells shared heartfelt thanks from his inspiring experience chaperoning our teens summer pilgrimage to Belize. Debra Harden gave a hopeful report on Athens Action Ministries and its Our Daily Bread program rebounding from their tragic fire at the Oconee Street UMC and settling into what may be their new home at First Baptist Church. Allen Stovall passed out a first draft for our review of suggested policies, procedures, organization, and costs from our Columbarium committee. And busy Finance Committee chair Phil Bettendorf presented Committee suggestions to revise our 2013 budget to more clearly reflect the changes in the associate rector salary and benefits projections, progress on an audit-friendly financial policies and procedures manual, and insights into the work of our committees on endowment and memorials. For much of the rest of our deliberations we updated our calendars. Some dates to add to summer and fall calendars: Fr. Robert announced that the re-revised target date to occupy our new structure is now August 29, with expected final completion of all conversions and renovations to adjacent buildings of September 30. Given the continuing coincidence of the Monsoons of 2013, we suggest you use (Continued on page 12)

VOLUME 46, ISSUE 46, ISSUE 8 8 PAGE 6 EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY ENROLLMENT OPEN FOR Emmanuel Episcopal Church has a rich tradition offering the Education for Ministry (EfM) program in the Athens area in partnership with St. Gregory the Great Episcopal Church. The EfM program enables individuals to identify and live into their Baptismal vocation by providing a comprehensive, experiential education in the foundations of our Christian faith within the framework of a small committed group. Gatherings start weekly in September and continue through the end of May to explore scripture along with the history and theology of Christianity in the context of our daily lives. The seminar is facilitated by a trained mentor using discussion, worship and theological reflection. The first year of study focuses on the Old Testament. The second year focuses on the New Testament. The third year focuses on Church History. The fourth year focuses on Christian doctrine and ethics. All learning materials are provided by the School of Theology at the University of the South (Sewanee). Participants in all years meet together to for discussion, worship and theological reflection. Br. Brian Paul Freese, OPA, who co-mentors the EfM program in the Athens area and attends Emmanuel Church says about the program, The learning materials from the School of Theology at Sewanee are great resources for study. The small group setting offers an engaging, open forum for discussion about our studies and theological reflection. It s a great opportunity to get a year s worth of Christian formation and theological education for the cost of one credit hour at the university! Catherine Drewry, who will be starting the fourth year of the program in September and attends St. Gregory the Great Church says about the program: EfM has especially challenged my understanding of God, mission, caring, and compassion, offering me this spiritual growth within a small community of friends. EfM is an continuing education diploma offering through the University of the South School of Theology and is sponsored by the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta. Upon completion of the four year course, graduates receive a diploma in theological education from the University of the South. The tuition is $350 which covers all expenses and provides instructional materials. Please consider this wonderful opportunity to explore in depth your Baptismal vocation within a supportive, diverse community. For more information, please contact Br. Brian Paul Freese, OPA at friarbrianpaul@gmail.com

VOLUME 46, ISSUE 46, ISSUE 8 8 PAGE 10 CATECHESIS TRAINING, SUMMER, 2013 During the summer months, our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd programs takes a break to allow time for rejuvenation of our leaders and planning for the coming school year. A large part of our time is dedicated to further educating our leaders. In June, Emmanuel hired Anna Hurdle to come to our campus for seven days and work with our Children s Formation leaders. Also in June, Emmanuel sent Ellen Dolphus and Georgia Collier to Asheville for 48 hours of training specific to Level III. Please enjoy reading these reflections from the training. In just a few weeks, Emmanuel will kick-off another year of work, prayer and learning in the Atrium. How blessed we are to have a group of educators so devoted and passionate about our children s spiritual growth, and a church leadership that supports the development of our young ones. * * * * * * I would like to thank Emmanuel for the opportunity to experience the growth that training in the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd affords. I think one of my favorite windows at Emmanuel is the one of Jesus and the children. He told us to let the children come to Him; our emphasis on our children at Emmanuel is honoring His command, and I am honored to participate in this endeavor. Also, the friendship that CGS promotes among the catechists is stronger than what is usually present when working with other Sunday School curricula. As a Level III catechist I am pleased with the philosophy of keeping it real : helping the children to see Bible history is real history. ~ Ellen Dolphus, Level III Catechist As a general thought on the Catechesis program, I must admit to initially seeing it as yet another education theory, this time aimed at Sunday School. It is different, but in a way that builds the Christian message by going beyond memorizing Bible verses and to seeing the Bible and the message of the New Testament as applied information and instruction. The ritual practices and relationships among what is written and what we do in church and what we do out on the street are first, in Level I (small children), introduced and practiced along with how to be in the Atrium and how to approach the Catechesis environment. In Level II (pre-adolescent), during the first awakenings of curiosity and understanding, that same broad scope of Bible and activity is reinforced and expanded on. Then in Level III, during that wonderful and terrible time just before the teens with its incipient hormonal and emotional awakenings, there is time and intent for intellectual and emotional discussion of the now-familiar Bible sections and worship routines and yet more emphasis on what can be taken from the Atrium to the world. The delight and blessing for the adults privileged to be Catechists, Shepherds, and helpers is to see the growth and the not-infrequent widening of the eyes when a concept becomes real to their charges. School teachers know this feeling in the academic environment, but what a quiet, incredible thrill to see our children connect together the Bible, Christianity, and their own lives through this guided process. It is intentionally measured in approach, and makes no apology for stretching itself from just after diapers to the beginnings of puberty. It is time well spent, and blessed. My knowledge and understanding of many things are far beyond what they were before this experience, and it is a blessing to have been allowed to take part in it. ~ Jay Shinn, Level III Catechist

PAGE 11 THE TOWER The extra Saturday session for Level III catechists was an extraordinary gift. Meeting Anna for the first time and seeing her present some key lessons added to what Ellen had already shown us. Getting to share stories about the program from Level I through III provided an encompassing vision as well as a deeper friendship with fellow catechists. ~ Sara Baldwin, Level III Catechist "My training with Anna for catechesis was far more than expected. As an Episcopalian for twenty some years, I learned more about my faith and chosen religion in that brief week of training and my subsequent experiences within the atrium than I would have thought possible. Learning about faith is an ongoing experience, but the catalyst of being involved with the catechesis training and working in the atrium with our children was beyond what words can express." ~ Cathi Shinn, Catechist and Photographer Extraordinaire I had no plans to come to the class that week, but Peg Wood mentioned the program when I say mentioned - I should say every time she has an opportunity to talk about the program, she does. Thank God for Peg. To put it simply, the catechesis training helped me to finally be able to put words to my faith - The Eucharist. Through the presentations that are given in the training one can come to a much deeper understanding of the beauty of the Holy Eucharist and what it means personally and corporately. There is great joy that has come to my being as a result of this. My heart s desire is to share this joy with all whom I meet. ~ Descygna Templeton, Level II Catechist Georgia Collier
