1 february 2016 NEWS FROM THE NARTHEX At Emmanuel Episcopal Church, we strive to provide people the opportunity for growth in their faith through our mutual love, respect and acceptance of one another. From father Robert PEACE & EVERY BLESSING FROM GOD It s a joy to be with you in News from the Narthex. I presume that all of your New Year s resolutions have helped you to begin this part of your journey healthier and in a good frame of mind. Isn t it interesting that we get all caught up in New Year s resolutions because we have had the ability to look back and see how we have lived the past year and we want to do something different? I ll exercise more, eat less, spend less, etc Next Wednesday, Ash Wednesday, the season of Lent begins. It s an opportunity for us to look back on our spiritual lives and see if there might be some spiritual resolutions we might wish to make. I m going to sin less and pray more. I m going to give up this or that so the money I save can benefit the poor. I am going to try to identify with those who are minority. All of that is well and good and important. We should keep in the front of our minds that the church arrives at Easter the most sacred Feast of the Year, by way of a Fast. Also keep in mind that the implications of a Fast are not meant to deny the good and the joy derived from the many blessings we have received and enjoy in our lives, but rather to simply remind us that they are gifts. Above all else a Fast is intended to nurture a sense of gratitude to the giver of the gift and to encourage us to share our gifts with those in need. Please watch our communications to be aware of the different Lenten programs available for you. The Vestry had a very good retreat this year. It did not unfold as we had planned. There is little that we can control in our lives, least of all Mother Nature. So we stayed in town and had wonderful conversations about where we have been as a church, where we are today and where we would like to go. All of the members are enthused, happy and eager to serve. There will be much going on this year and they are equipped for the task of moving us forward and helping in our spiritual growth. Over the next number of weeks you will be reading or hearing any number of status reports on our Phase II Preservation and Renewal Project. I feel humbled and thankful in the response thus far of almost 70% of our Pledging Members in good standing for the project. Parish Leadership is grateful for your trust in us. For me it is a sacred trust. I am grateful for Naomi Norman and Roger Lange for saying yes to serve as Emmanuel s Senior and Junior Wardens, respectively. Both of them are dedicated and loving servants. Please continue to pray for our life together in community. In the end that is what really matters. Jesus didn t come to build buildings but to build up people into his image and likeness so that we might be Christ s hands and feet and head and voice in (continued on page 2)
