1 To seek, trust and glorify God through humble service and continual prayer. To raise up devoted disciples. May 29, 2016 St. Ann Church & Model Schools Haiku Road Kaneohe, Hawaii The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body & Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) The Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ is also known as the Solemnity of Corpus Christi, which translates from Latin to "Body of Christ." This feast originated in France in the midthirteenth century and Pope Urban IV extended it to the whole Church in The United States celebrates this feast on the Sunday following Trinity Sunday. Corpus Christi calls us to focus on two manifestations of the Body of Christ, the Holy Eucharist and the Church. The primary purpose of this feast is to focus our attention on the Eucharist. The opening prayer at Mass calls our attention to Jesus' suffering and death and our worship of Him, especially in the Eucharist. Every Mass calls our attention to the Eucharist and the Real Presence of Christ in it. The secondary focus is upon the Body of Christ as it is present in the Church. The Church calls itself the Body of Christ because of the intimate communion Jesus shares with his disciples. He expresses this in the gospels by using the metaphor of a body in which He is the head. This image helps us keep in mind both the unity and the diversity of the Church. The Church sees this celebration as an opportunity for public Eucharistic processions which serve as a sign of common faith and adoration. Our worship of Jesus in His Body and Blood calls us to offer to God our Father a pledge of undivided love and an offering of ourselves to the service of others. What more wondrous than this Holy Sacrament! In it, bread and wine are changed substantially, and under the appearance of a little bread and wine is had Christ Jesus, God and perfect man. No other sacrament is so beneficial. Since it was instituted unto the salvation of all, it is offered by the Holy Church for the living and for the dead, that all may share in its treasure. ~St. Thomas Aquinas Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary
2 Solemnity of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi) Today s Reflection: Today, we focus our attention on the reason we come together each week. Jesus has given himself up for all of us. Take it; this is my body.this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many. With his own body and blood he gives each of us the greatest gift we can ever receive himself. Do you recognize the commitment you make when you accept the Body and Blood of Christ into yourself? Next Sunday s Readings - June 5, Tenth Sunday of Ordinary Time 1 Kings 17:17-24 Galatians 1:11-19 Luke 7:11-17 One of the most potent prophets for the evangelists to call to mind when they wrote of Jesus ministry was the prophet Elijah. Elijah is clearly intended as the model for Jesus in Luke s Gospel. In both the first reading and the Gospel, a widow has lost her only son. In both cultures, a sole son would have been his mother s protector and source of sustenance; to lose him would be both personal and social devastation. Both prophets are moved by the distress of the widows they encounter, since both are filled with the loving mercy of God. But Luke also employs what is called step-parallelism. He casts Jesus as greater than Elijah. Elijah prays to the LORD to restore the breath to the boy (recalling God s breathing into the lifeless clay of Eden to create Adam); Jesus directly commands the boy to arise. Elijah prays to the LORD. In this story, Luke names Jesus Lord for the very first time in his Gospel. The raising of the dead son in the Book of Kings is meant to call us to believe in the power of the LORD God. In Luke, it is meant to continue the Gospel s ongoing revelation of Jesus as Lord and God. Both Elijah and Jesus believed in the resurrection of the body, the belief we proclaim every Sunday in our Creed. As Elijah was a role model for Jesus, so they are both role models for us as we live out every day our belief in the living God. We most likely will not be called upon to reanimate a deceased child. But all of us have opportunities to act like these great prophets. It is well within our ability each day, to be moved with pity, to offer ourselves to help those in distress, particularly those who are lowly or powerless. In all that we do we can all be vessels filled with the mercy and life of God, we can pray as Elijah did for God s will to be made known, and believe Jesus Christ, the Resurrection and the Life.
