Ash Wednesday My Dear Friends, Whether you are joining us today for the first time or have been active in our parish family for years, know that you are most welcome and it is a great joy and blessing to serve as your pastor. If you have any questions or concerns about the parish or our faith, please be sure to see me, Fr. Bob, Fr. George, Sr. Theresa, or one of our deacons. We are here for you! Today we are invited by the Lord to join Him in the wilderness of Lent for a 40 day period of prayer, fasting and works of charity. It is a time of forgiveness and renewal; purification and enlightenment; and dying and rising...as we open our hearts to the merciful love of God. Through today s imposition of ashes, we are reminded that we are merely dust and unto dust we shall all return. Life is transitory. We are called to Repent and believe in the Gospels. Forgiveness and renewal is the hallmark of our journey. Today we recall the Four Last Things: one day we shall all die, on that day we shall be judged, and that there is a Heaven and a Hell. We are called to prepare for the day when we will meet our Creator by following His will: to love God with all our hearts, souls, mind, and strength, and share His love and mercy with our neighbor, especially those most in need. This Lent offers wonderful opportunities for us all to experience God s forgiveness and renewal. Take time to read this bulletin and make note of those events you would like to attend. If you didn t receive a copy of our Lenten Highlights, they are available in the narthex. Of course our website is also an excellent resource for parish events and other opportunities to grow in faith. One of the highlights of this year s season will be our Lenten Mission by Fr. Larry Richards, Monday through Thursday evening, March 25-28, beginning at 7pm. Fr. Larry is a gifted speaker, writer, and evangelist. He promises both to capture your interest and help you grow closer to the Lord! Please invite your family and friends to join you! Lent is a time of renewal through prayer, fasting, acts of mercy and love. May God bless you throughout these 40 days and know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. Growing courageously in Christ, Fr. Bill Swengros Pastor

4 Page 4 Lent PRAYER ON ASH WEDNESDAY O Jesus, in honor of the forty days you spent in the desert praying and fasting, we begin this season of Lent. Prayer, fasting and almsgiving are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter. Traditions During Lent and Holy Week Alleluia Sunday (Sunday preceding Ash Wednesday): This is the last day when the Alleluia is pronounced or sung preceding the Gospel. It will not be heard again until the Easter Vigil. Attend Mass on Ash Wednesday (the first day of Lent): This is the day when we receive ashes on the forehead. This custom reminds us of death and the necessity of penance and contrition. Stations of the Cross: This exercise of Christian piety can be traced back to the 4 th century. The devotion is practiced in pious imitation of the pilgrims who traveled to the Holy Land to visit the places hallowed by Christ s suffering. Each station or stop is a halting pace at which the soul of the onlooker is moved to sorrowful contemplation. Almsgiving: Material or financial assistance given to a needy person or cause, prompted by Christian charity. Almsgiving is recognized by the Church as one of the principal forms of penance. During Lent, family or individual participation in Operation Rice Bowl or making contributions to the St. Vincent de Paul poor box located in the church would be examples of this practice. Reception of the Sacrament of Penance: A precept of the Church obliges the faithful guilty of grave sin to confess at least once a year. The Church favors more frequent reception of the sacrament not only for the reconciliation of persons guilty of serious sins but also for the reasons of devotion. Devotional confession...in which venial sins or previously forgiven sins are confessed. Liturgical Colors: Violet vestments are used during Lent to symbolize penance except on the Fourth Sunday of Lent or Laetare Sunday when rose vestments may be used to mark the halfway point and a respite in the penitential season. Easter Duty: The serious obligation binding Catholics of Roman Rite to receive the Eucharist during the Easter season, from the first Sunday of Lent to and including Trinity Sunday. During this holy time of sacrifice, payer and good works may we prepare our hearts, our souls, our minds and bodies for the greatest feast in the Church, the feast of Your Resurrection. May we follow in Your footsteps as we journey with you to Jerusalem. At each Mass that we participate in during this Lent, may we be reminded of the Last Supper and Your gift of Eucharist. May we continue with You to Calvary, accepting the crosses that are given to us each day. May we stay with Your Mother Mary as she stands by Your Cross. We ask You to forgive us our sins and thank You for the sacrifice You have made for us. Grant us, O God, the perseverance to strive each day of this holy season of Lent To become better Christians. May our preparation for Easter make us one with the Risen Christ on Easter and every day of our lives. Amen. Regulations on Fasting and Abstinence The dual disciplines of fasting and abstinence have a long history in the Catholic Church. Going back to the early Church, the purpose behind the custom of self-denial is not punishment; it is to simplify our lifestyles so that we create certain emptiness. In this way, freed from all distractions, we are able to hear and respond to God s continued call to conversion and holiness. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18 to 59 years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence.

Please contact Maria Costa at mcosta@stpaulchurch.com Planning on getting married? Congratulations!!! But, don t forget that the success to a great marriage starts with a great preparation. Like for the reception of any sacrament, you need to prepare spiritually, not only for the wedding but most important, for your married life together. The Church requires at least six months of marriage preparation. Are you civilly married but never had your marriage blessed in the Church? This process of having the civil marriage recognized by the Church is known as Convalidation. It is usually easy and it helps couples to live their faith more fully especially when parents want their kids to receive the Sacraments in the Catholic Church. It sets for them a good example.
