1 THE CLARION ST. CLEMENT S EPISCOPAL CHURCH BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA I thought that church activity quieted down in October, but as I peruse the parish calendar, I realize I was previously misinformed. Our space is being will be used by various outside dance, drama, music, meditation, educational, and professional organizations. This opens St. Clement s up to the wider community, and earns money for our ministries. In addition to all of the activity of our friends, our own congregation has a full calendar. The choirs, guilds, formation, and fellowship groups continue to be busy, and on October 14, our Outreach Committee with the Sunday School and youth group are exhibiting the Mac N Cheese Roll, back by popular demand. We have been collecting macaroni and cheese boxes (through October 14) and will witness them lined up and knocked down like giant dominoes. Busy October OCTOBER 2018 From noon to 2 pm on October 14, everyone is invited to the parish hall for a square dance. Come for the dance, fellowship, and for the pizza (please RSVP so we have enough). On October 20, we are building a playhouse for Habitat for Humanity, and, when we are finished, the recipient family will take it home. I regret that I will miss that event, since I will be at the Diocesan Convention with our delegates. I am excited to be part o f t h e T e e n Confirmation Class beginning on the last Sunday of the month, and I look forward to the Confirmation at Grace Cathedral on June 2. I give thanks for all the action and know that the Spirit is at work. In peace, Bruce St. Clement s Episcopal Church The Rev. Bruce D. 3 Director of Outreach and Family Ministries The vestry and I are in the process of hiring a Director of Outreach and Family Ministries. This half-time lay position will help our parish grow its active membership and develop a more diverse and inclusive church community. This is intended to be a three-year commitment, funded by a bequest and by investment income generated by the Goode Ritson Endowment Fund, and so it will have no impact on our current operating budget. Bruce St. Clement s People at CDSP At the Church Divinity School of the Pacific, the Episcopal seminary in Berkeley, there will be two St. Clement s-connected people preaching at weekday services in October. Wednesday, October 3, at 8:30 am: Healing Eucharist, with a sermon by the Rev. Bonnie Stewart Bonnie was sponsored for ordination to the diaconate by St. Clement s and is now a deacon at St. Michael and All Angels parish in Portland, Oregon, and studying for ordination to the priesthood. Tuesday, October 9, at 8:30 am: Shanna Hawks will give her senior sermon Shanna was a field education student at St. Clement s during the school year, and is now in her final year of seminary. She will be ordained a deacon in Spokane, Washington, on October 21 (see page 4 for the invitation), and will preach at St. Clement on October 28. Square Dance Sunday, October pm SAVE THE DATE FOR THE PARISH RETREAT: March 8-10, 2019 October 2018 Come one, come all to a parish square dance at noon on Sunday, October 14! There will be PIZZA. The dances will be taught, so no dancing experience is needed. All ages are welcome! The dance caller will be Bob Elling. An approximate head count for pizza-buying purposes would be helpful, so let us know you plan to come by calling or ing the church office (stclements@stclementsberkeley.org). at the Bishop s Ranch in Healdsburg Page 3
4 The Clarion Movie Group Sunday, October 28, 6:00 pm at the home of Barbara Smith Join us for Movie Group! We watch the films on our own and then gather for a casual potluck, great conversations and fun. Call (510) for directions. The films to watch: Colette A Star is Born BlacKkKlansman New Pathway Page 4 Since the old maintenance shed on the south side of the church was no longer being used, the men of the Layton family disassembled it and had the remains hauled away. From the rubble of the foundation, our resident volunteer landscaper Eleanor Lindgren constructed a pathway and small patio around the giant tree. In addition, she planted new vegetation. This project resulted in a beautiful new space, in addition to opening up the church to new south side views.
5 Outreach Corner October 2018 Habitat for Humanity Playhouse Build Saturday, October 20, 9:00 am - 2:00 pm RSVP to the church office: stclements@stclementsberkeley.org Please join us for this special work project. All are invited to take part in putting together a children s playhouse (including kids age 10 plus). The playhouse (model pictured) will be made for children of military families stationed in the Bay Area. We will paint the playhouse following a theme the child recipient wants (with help from the Habitat crew). Our day will begin at 9:00 am on Saturday morning (with juice, coffee & bagels) and should end about 2 pm; with a break for lunch provided by the Outreach Committee. We will be instructed and helped by two representatives from Habitat. They will provide the materials and tools for the playhouse. In general, no construction/carpentry skills are required. The work will take place in the lawn in front of Palache Hall, weather permitting. We hope you will take part in this worthy project. It should be lots of fun!!! C o n t a c t D a v i d C u n n i n g h a m (cunninghamd2@usfca.edu) or Liz Tracey (metracey@gmail.com) for more details. Mac N Cheese Drive Extended! The Mac N Cheese Roll is back by popular demand! 7 Rectory Update October 2018 The rectory fire in July of 2017 did significant damage to the structure and resulted in the loss of property of St. Clement s and the O Neill family. But the totality of the impact was more than that. Michele O Neill had invested twenty years of loving care into the home. That was all gone. As the restoration of the rectory began in earnest, Michele, now for the second time, has engaged in the process of rebuilding the O Neill family home. Anyone who has ever done a major remodel or construction can appreciate the myriad decisions, large and small, that must be made as the project goes forward. Michele has taken on that challenge with enthusiasm and dedication. From the width of a grout line to the color of the exterior paint, and everything in between, Michele has paid attention to details and made informed decisions. We at St. Clement s are so fortunate to have Michele O Neill as part of this project and part of our community. Thank you, Michele! The construction is progressing on schedule, from its start date last month. Significant structural engineering and loadbearing framing have been completed; work on services like plumbing, electrical, water, sewer, and heating, will all begin in the next few weeks. In the coming weeks, look for announcements about opportunities to tour the rectory, to get a first-hand view of what has been done. Page 7
