1 The Episcopaper Summer 2015 St. John s Episcopal Church 913 Second Street Snohomish, WA Phone: office@stjohnsnohomish.org Website: The Rev. Mark J. Miller, Rector St. John s Snohomish Serving our community since 1892 Year-Round Schedule Sundays: Holy Eucharist 8 AM Rite One & 10 AM Rite Two Sunday School: 9:45 AM Thursdays: 10 AM Farewell to Sara Bates We sent Sara Bates off to St. Luke s church in Seattle last week. We are proud and feel privileged to have been a part of the Church s discernment for her eventual ordination. She came to be a parishioner at St. John s, and while here participated as a lay member in all aspects of our parish life. For a while she was employed as office administrator. Last year the vestry nominated her to Bishop Rickel and the Commission on Ministry to be a postulant for the Priesthood. In December they met, and chose to not decide yet this. Postulancy is the first stage toward ordination. The Bishop subsequently met with her, and suggested that she continue this discernment at St. Luke s Episcopal Church in Ballard, Seattle. There she would also be a lay member of the parish. A priest has recently been put in charge there, with the mission to renew and revitalize the ministry of that parish. The bishop felt that after time there, he would be able to make the decision about Postulancy. We are the parish which has discerned her call and nominated her to the bishop. We will continue to pray for her, and wait in eagerness for the celebration of her place in the ministry of the church of God. Fr. Mark Summer Time and the Living is Easy The last few months at St. John s have been busy and we have accomplished much. Now, as we ease into summer, it is a time to relax, reflect, spend time with family and friends and enjoy God s beautiful creation. Advent focused on simple living and how to survive the busyness of the holidays. Christmas had our kids with their usual wonderful pageant and introduction of Epiphany with the arrival of the Magi. Lent arrived and we learned to connect our own stories with the stories we know and hear at the Great Easter Vigil. Our Education Hours have been varied and provided us with information and interesting ideas on how to carry out our mission in the world. We have welcomed new families into our community and new individuals into the Body of Christ through Holy Baptism. We have said goodbye to dear friends who have entered into eternal life with our Lord. We have celebrated with fellowship at the Epiphany Dinner, the Agape Dinner, the Newcomers Dinner, and the Midsummer Picnic. So, after this busy time, slow down, schedule less, take time to catch up with family and friends, and enjoy some quiet time.

4 What s all the fuss about 2 degrees of warming? Here in the Northwest we d like it to be a little warmer on some cold winter days. But, of course, we would also have to expect more warm days in summer. Let s look at those two degrees from the perspective of human health. If our normal temperature is 98.6 and it suddenly begins running we would notice, but probably not be overly concerned. But two degrees is the lowest predicted change in global temperature with most businesses and governments planning for a possible four degree rise. Now if our temperature shoots up to 102.6, we notice and are concerned. Let s not even consider a rise of 11.5 degrees, which is the highest change predicted in computer models. We all know what that would mean! We don t know what the actual increase in temperature will be but we know it is happening. Worldwide, 2014 was the warmest year on record and was the warmest decade on record since thermometer-based observations began. As Christians we need to consider what that means for the earth. A good place to start is with Pope Francis s encyclical Laudato Si. Laudato Si Pope Francis recently released his Encyclical, Laudato Si, Praise be to you, the first line of a canticle by St. Francis that praises God with all of his creation. Pope Francis states, In this Encyclical, I would like to enter into dialogue with all people about our common home I urgently appeal, then, for a new dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet. We need a conversation that includes everyone, since the environment challenge we are undergoing, and its human roots, concern and affect us all... Living our vocation to be protectors of God s handiwork is essential to a life of virtue; it is not an optional or a secondary aspect of our Christian experience. There is plenty more; 200+ pages. Right Rev. Michael Curry Elected Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, Bishop of North Carolina, will be the next Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. The Presiding Bishop is the head of our church and serves a term of 9 years. Bishop Curry is the first black Episcopalian to be Presiding Bishop. He follows Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, the first woman to lead the Episcopal Church. In his three parish ministries, Bishop Curry was active in the founding of ecumenical summer day camps for children, the creation of networks of family day care providers and educational centers, and the brokering of millions of dollars of investment in inner city neighborhoods. He also sat on the Commission on Ministry in each of the three dioceses in which he has served. During his time as Bishop of the Diocese of North Carolina, Bishop Curry has taken the Diocese into the complex modern world that churches must engage in order to spread the Gospel. He instituted a network of canons, deacons, and youth ministry professionals dedicated to supporting the ministry that already happens in local congregations. Bishop Curry has also been active in issues of social justice, speaking out on immigration policy and marriage equality. Bishop Curry serves on the boards of a large number of organizations and has a national preaching and teaching ministry. But his most immediate and striking quality is his style of preaching. It is rooted in the tradition of Southern black churches. Check out his sermons on YouTube; I guarantee you won t fall asleep. For more Convention news read Bishop Rickel s Blog and Across the 4
