Katie Hargis, Dean HAPPENINGS March 5, stmarkshastings@gmail.com The Forum Lyndle Lewis, Senior Warden I want to talk a little more about why I think involvement in church community is necessary to our identity as Christians. Certainly, personal and private prayer and worship have their place in our lives. I sit alone in my room most mornings and read the daily office of Morning Prayer and I get a lot of pleasure and benefit from being alone with God and my own thoughts. Many people feel that that kind of private devotion and spiritual exercise is enough. Personally, I wish that were true. Church is hard. Community is hard. For an extreme introvert like me mingling with lots of people is painful. The last time I was "in my comfort zone" was probably in the womb. But I've learned to adapt and live in community, if not comfortably, at least meaningfully. Learning how to live within community is one of the first lessons of growing up. We start with ourselves at the center and learn to expand our communities like concentric circles. Parents, household, extended family, neighborhood, school, work, organizations, church, all kinds of settings become our communities. We learn to exercise influence and cooperation in a give-and-take that leads to healthy environments. Our individuality, our God given uniqueness is something we express and exercise within community. When we welcome, and make room for all of the unique people who ask to join our circles we are doing God's work of reconciliation. If people make room for me I can do nothing less than make room for them in my turn. I've intentionally put myself into challenging situations of church and religious life because I felt a nudge or heard a "still small voice" moving me to a place of wholeness. In doing so I have been stretched and shaped into something resembling a human being. Being in relationship with God is a first step. The next step is relationship with each other in a spiritual community. Love the lord your God and love your neighbor as yourself. This is God s nature as revealed in scripture. I won't wade into the theology of the Trinity but when we talk about the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit we are talking about community. As Christians, we are part of God's Kingdom, members of a holy and eternal community where even I can feel at home. 1

3 HAPPENINGS OPEN TABLE This Sunday is Open Table sack lunch making Sunday. Volunteers are need to make sandwiches after the 10:00 Eucharist. EASTER LILIES Sign-up sheets are placed in the library and in the back of the church, if you would like to make an Easter Lily Dedication. The deadline is March 25 th and coming up quickly!
