3 ACTIVITIES AHEAD IN OUR PARISH URBAN MISSION FOOD PANTRY During the month of May, the Evangelization Team is collecting spring cleaning products. Special boxes are by the doors of the Church for your donations. The Food Pantry continues to need can openers. These may be placed in the special donation boxes also. The Team thanks you in advance for your generosity. CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS APPEAL will be the 2nd collection at all Masses the weekend of May 27th and May 28th. Right now, over 40% of dioceses in the US are considered home missions because they are unable to fund essential pastoral work needed in their communities. ENTERTAINING ANGELS: A Parish Hospitality Workshop Saturday June 3 from 8am-4pm at SUNY Potsdam. Join us for a day-long workshop sponsored by the Offices of New Evangelization and Formation for Ministry that explored how we as a Catholic Faith Community welcome people. A hospitable community doesn t just happen. Hospitality takes effort and intentionality and work. It isn t just the responsibility of a select few on a hospitality committee. It requires each and every one of us. Please join us for a practical one-day workshop at SUNY Potsdam to learn how you can make a difference in how your parish community opens the doors to Christ. 4 Note From the Pope, Pope at Santa Marta: Do not resist the Holy Spirit, it is a gift from God. In his homily at Casa Santa Marta, Pope Francis focused on a passage from the Acts of the Apostles, where he emphasized the Holy Spirit s ability to move the Church. Pope Francis The closure, the resistance to the Holy Spirit; the phrase that always closes and stops you: it s always done like that. And this kills. This kills freedom, it kills joy, it kills the faithfulness to the Holy Spirit that always acts ahead, carrying forward the Church. He said that the way to prevent this from happening is through discernment and concluded by asking Christians to pray for such, so that they are not to fall into immobility. EXCERPTS FROM POPE FRANCIS HOMILY The Spirit is the gift of God, of this God, our Father who always surprises us. The God of surprises. Why? Because He is a living God, who dwells in us, a God who moves our hearts, a God who is in the Church and walks with us and in this journey He surprises us. It is he, He who has the creativity to create the world, the creativity to create new things every day. He is the God who surprises us. From the times of the prophets until now, the sin to resist the Holy Spirit had always been there: this resistance to the Spirit. This is the sin with which Stephen accuses the members of the Sanhedrin: You and your fathers have always resisted the Holy Spirit. No, it has always been done this way, and must be done so. They tell Peter not to bring these newness, to remain calm... take a tranquilizer and calm the nerves...be calm...so the voce of God is shut. In the Psalm the Lord speaks to the people: Do not harden your hearts like your fathers. The phrase, It is and has always been done like this shuts and resists the Holy Spirit, and kills freedom, kills joy, kills fidelity to the Holy Spirit who always acts in advance and carries the Church forward. But then the question how can I know if it is from the Holy Spirit or from worldliness, the spirit of the world or the spirit of the devil? For this, one needs to ask for the grace of discernment the tool that the very Spirit has granted us. How should one discern every occasion? The answer, the Pope said, is the way the apostles did it: they came together, talked and saw the path of the Holy Spirit. Instead, those without this grace or those who did not pray for it remained closed and still. Steve Murray St. Mary s and St. John s Pilgrimage to National Shrine of Saint Kateri Tekawitha and The Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs Tuesday, June 6, 2017 Join parishioners from St. Mary s in Clayton and St. John s in Lafargeville for a day trip to Auriesville to visit the National Shrine of Saint Kateri Tekawitha ( and The Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs (auriesvilleshrine.com) on Tuesday, June 6. The day will begin with a 7:00 A.M. departure from St. Mary s (possible Watertown pick up) and include talks and tours with guides and a visit to the gift shop at each shrine, and a mass with our pastor, Fr. LaBaff, at the Coliseum on the grounds of The Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs. Cost for the day is $100, which covers coach transportation from St. Mary s, a donation to each shrine, a catered lunch, and dinner at Symeons near Utica on the way home. Arrival back at St. Mary s is expected to be 9:00 P.M. 6 MAY 21: SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Readings: Acts 8:5-8, 14-17/1 Pt 3:15-18/Jn 14:15-21 If you love me, you will keep my commandments. Love God and neighbor. The Holy Spirit is the love between the Father and the Son. It is through the gift of the Spirit that we are able to love at all. It is through the Holy Spirit that God is with us, always. Encouraged by the gift of the Spirit, we can witness to this great love to all those who feel alone, abandoned and discouraged. As we enter these last two weeks of the Easter Season and look forward to Pentecost, let us pray for an outpouring of the Holy Spirit s gifts, that others may know us by our love. ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP In Chapter Five of his Encyclical Laudato Si - Care For Our Common Home Pope Francis urges a new model of progress: It is not enough to balance, in the medium term, the protection of nature with financial gain, or the preservation of the environment with progress. A technological and economic development which does not leave in its wake a better world and an integrally higher quality of life cannot be considered progress. Spend a few minutes reflecting on that message. How might progress be re-shaped accordingly?
