She had just completed a weekend basketball tournament at which eight teams participated. At Tourney s end, the team members all received awards emblazoned with the inscription: Consolation Bracket Third Place Game Runner Up. Think about it a minute, re-read it. The bright girl saw right through the award, wondering what was the purpose of such an award given the reality of her team s performance. The girl s team had lost all three games, finishing in last place. When we exceed our goals, we rightfully feel a sense of accomplishment and pride. Conversely, few people feel a similar sense of pride when falling short of goals, even if the effort was admirable. Our society has become loath to lose, to place anyone above another, to acknowledge failure. We have become a society of excuses. So, if our kids finish in last place hey, give em a ribbon anyway. Who in their right mind would keep such an award on their wall? They lost, not once or twice, but three times in a row. Get over it it s a game. More recently, consider the case of the Minnesota Gophers Football team. I certainly admire their athleticism, strength and agility and above all, their ability to perform in front of thousands of cheering (or jeering) fans each week. Having said that, why on earth ought we to reward mediocrity? The Golden Gophers are going bowling that s right. They finished the season with a 5-7 record, and yet because there were not enough winning teams to fill the forty game Bowl schedule that s right forty they were chosen to play Central Michigan in the Quick Lane Bowl in Detroit. Are you kidding me? College Bowl Games ought to be rewards for successful seasons. Perhaps a dozen would more than suffice but forty? The Athletic Department maintains that the extra practice time benefits the program, building for next year. Let s see what else might a University of Minnesota student athlete be doing between Thanksgiving and Christmas? Studying perhaps, writing papers, visiting family at home? No, they ll be practicing, getting a head start on next year. The Nebraska Cornhuskers (also 5-7) accepted their invitation only provided that the coaches did not collect their contract bonuses for a Bowl appearance. I promise that I ll be all smiles and joy this Christmas but in my final column before the season, I feel called to be a bit of a Scrooge. The lessons of life yes, including failure are important ones. But none is more important than the lesson of taking responsibility for our own actions. Like many of you, I read about the egregious incident at Minnesota s oldest public high school (founded in 1866), during which a teacher who was trying to break up a student fight wound up body slammed to the ground, suffering serious injury. As appalling as this was, to me it was made even worse by an explanation given by the teenager s mother. She maintained that her son did not know that the person he body slammed was a teacher he thought it was another student. That says it all. In all honesty, I may be even angrier with the mother than her son. What on earth does this teach our children about personal responsibility? Growing up, there was little question in our minds about whose side our parents would take in a dispute with a teacher. They always received the benefit of the doubt, until and unless the facts dictated otherwise. But teachers had the presumption of being in the right, and we did not take it as an affront. Well, if this sounds harsh, it is not my intention per se; rather,

5 Page 5 it is a truth of life that we find our greatest peace in acting as responsible agents of God s love and grace. And no possible amount of government funded programming will fix the more fundamental problems of our society and the struggles of family life. We do no one any favors by rewarding mediocrity or covering for bad behavior. And I fear that this is precisely what we are doing, much to the detriment of our society. Yes, Advent is a time of watching and waiting, a season of hope filled expectation. But it is equally characterized by a penitential aspect in which we make straight a path towards the Lord. In order for this to be authentic, we must first humbly acknowledge our need for a Savior, begging God s pardon and mercy. We stand up and honestly evaluate our situation, clearing away all that would prevent us from approaching the Lord unworthily. But in a society that increasingly denies sin, or at the very least makes copious excuses for our missteps, one begins to wonder if we need a Redeemer. Here is the brutal truth- we need to experience failure, to scrape our knees, shake off the dust from when we fall and get up again. Our path towards pursuing virtue is not found in a trophy or an excuse, but often in a valley of tears. But when we persevere in that valley, the road leads to immense internal peace and the joy that comes from bearing our particle of the Cross. As we prepare to welcome our Savior, may we never forget the important lessons of life, most especially when they are difficult ones. Last Sunday s Jubilee Year of Mercy Mass with Archbishop Bernard Hebda was a highlight of my time as Rector. What a tremendous joy. I am grateful to all who helped in decorating our Porta Sancta so beautifully and all who participated at Mass. Remember, it is sufficient to enter the inner central door, clearly marked as a Holy Door. Congratulations to Mrs. Jayne Windnagel and our Children s Choristers for their participation in what turned out to be a packed Cathedral at the pre-christmas Concert last week headlined by local pianist Steven C. Anderson. I am so delighted that they were able to sing before so many guests, and they were very well-received. They will also sing at the Christmas Eve 5:00 p.m. Mass. Envelopes for today s second collection for Christmas Flowers may be found in the pews. Please print clearly the names of those for whom you are offering prayers, and they will be remembered at our Christmas Masses. Are you in need of some last minute Christmas stocking stuffers? Please stop by the Information Desk after Mass to make a donation in support of our stained glass restoration and receive in return beautiful reproductions of one or more of our eight saints representing the Beatitudes. They radiate beautifully when hung in front of a window and you are supporting a worthy cause. Sincerely in Christ, Fr. John L. 7 Page 7 VOICES FROM THE ARCHIVES With the completion of the sanctuary and the Shrines of the Nations, Archbishop Dowling, wrote: All that I every proposed to do [is] done... But the ink was hardly dry on the paper, when Dowling turned his attention to the vast expanse of the Cathedral. His fragile health forced him to delegate the work to Msgr. Lawrence Ryan, who carried out Dowling s plans for the final completion of the Cathedral interior:.... [which] included everything except the decoration of the dome and the designing and producing of the Stained glass windows. But all work stopped in 1930 with the death of Archbishop Dowling. When Dowling was installed in March 1919, he was regarded as Ireland s fragile, reserved and bookish successor. Theologian, historian, a man of intellectual refinement... this most likeable of men found difficulty in being accepted by his nostalgic clergy and laity. Hansen continues, The major obstacle to that acceptance was nothing more than the simple fact that he was not John Ireland. There was fear that the new Archbishop would delay or postpone the completion of the Cathedral, but all concerns were dismissed when Dowling announced his plans for the interior. While the work followed the rapid pace of the Roaring Twenties, it maintained a high artistic standard. Dowling brought his own highly developed aesthetic sense to the project, offering suggestions at every turn. Only the most harmonious and appropriate designs would be realized in his cathedral, and no detail, however small, was executed without first passing his scrutiny. Just as the exterior was the result of John Ireland s vision, the interior was the fruit of Austin Dowling s flawless artistic instinct, which suffused the daunting space of the nave, transepts and dome with warmth and serenity. Excerpts from An Architectural Biography, by Eric Hansen. Note: Archbishop Austin Dowling died on November 28, and was buried on December 3, Msgr. Lawrence Ryan remembered: More than thirty-thousand people visited the Cathedral to view the Archbishop s remains. Clearly the faithful had an affection for the Archbishop which was very real, and I wonder if he every suspected how general and how real this affection was. ACSP. REMEMBRANCE, THANKSGIVING, CELEBRATION Centennial Note: 25 Objects: The Bell. Stop on your way to coffee and donuts on Sunday, December 20 after the 8:00 and 10:00 a. m. Masses to find your treasure. THANK YOU On December 10, over 2,500 people attended the free Christmas Beyond concert, including hundreds who had never before visited our beautiful Cathedral. It was a magnificent, joy-filled evening due in part to the fine singing of our own Saints Cecilia and Gregory Choristers directed by Jayne Windnagel. Jayne s solo on Gesu Bambino filled the Cathedral with beauty, and Chorister Addie Ryan (whose parents drive to the Cathedral from Brainerd every Wednesday for Choir School) touched many hearts with her sweet, pure solo on Silent Night. Susan and Mike Lavely continue to give countless hours in service as House Managers for these events, offering kind hospitality to our many guests and caring for the appearance of the Cathedral. For all of these we are so very thankful, for through their service to the Cathedral, others are enabled to experience the transformative power of beauty. Additionally, members of the Cathedral Staff work above and beyond (and joyfully!) answering phones, cleaning, changing lights, providing publicity and infrastructure that further contributes to our mission, for which the Sacred Music Department is thankful and humbled.
