2 Evensong Eve St. Michael and all Angels Thursday 28 September :15 pm Welcome to Grace Cadral. Choral Evensong marks end working day and prepares for approaching night. The roots this service come out ancient monastic traditions Christian prayer. Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop Canterbury in 16th century, created this form as part simplification services within newly-reformed Church England. The Episcopal Church, as part worldwide Anglican Communion, has inherited this pattern evening prayer. In this service we are invited to reflect on business past day, to pray for world and for ourselves, and to commend all into God s hands as words Holy Scripture are said and sung. The beauty music is fered to help us set our lives in light eternity; same light which dwelt among us in Jesus, and which now illuminates us by Spirit. May this service be a blessing to you. Charles Villiers Stanford Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in B-flat My soul doth magnify Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded lowliness his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on m that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered proud in imagination ir hearts. He hath put down mighty from ir seat, and hath exalted humble and meek. He hath filled hungry with good things, and rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefars, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to Far, and to Son, and to Holy Ghost: as it was in beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Luke 1: Revelation 12:7-12 The people sit. The Nunc Dimittis The people stand. Stanford Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before face all people, To be a light to lighten Gentiles, and to be glory thy people Israel. 6 The Readings Genesis 28:10-17 Jacob left Beer-sheba and went toward Haran. He came to a certain place and stayed re for night, because sun had set. Taking one stones place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place. And he dreamed that re was a ladder set up on earth, top it reaching to heaven; and angels God were ascending and descending on it. And Lord stood beside him and said, I am Lord, God Abraham your far and God Isaac; land on which you lie I will give to you and to your fspring; and your fspring shall be like dust earth, and you shall spread abroad to west and to east and to north and to south; and all families earth shall be blessed in you and in your fspring. Know that I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you. Then Jacob woke from his sleep and said, Surely Lord is in this place and I did not know it! And he was afraid, and said, How awesome is this place! This is none or than house God, and this is gate heaven. Revelation 12:7-12 War broke out in heaven; Michael and his angels fought against dragon. The dragon and his angels fought back, but y were defeated, and re was no longer any place for m in heaven. The great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called Devil and Satan, deceiver whole world he was thrown down to earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, proclaiming, Now have come salvation and power and kingdom our God and authority his Messiah, for accuser our comrades has been thrown down, who accuses m day and night before our God. But y have conquered him by blood Lamb and by word ir testimony, for y did not cling to life even in face death.rejoice n, you heavens and those who dwell in m! But woe to earth and sea, for devil has come down to you with great wrath, because he knows that his time is short! Gift Story and today we hear story Jacob s Ladde There is a light installation in north aisle nave titled Jacob s Dream: A Luminous Path. It was created by cadral s 2016 Artists in Residence, Benjamin Bergery and well-known Bay Area artist, Jim Campbell. The inspiration for this work is description in today s reading from Genesis: a ladder appears on earth, extending to heaven, on which angels ascend and descend. I overheard a visitor recently explaining installation to a young child. We are looking at a work art made glass. The ladder is not a real ladder. What it shows us is real. Affinities and correlations between art, imagination, and faith are palpable in today s readings. Is re any depiction joinder heaven and earth more memorable than Jacob s ladder? The poet Denise Levertov imagines it as a stone stairway, a hard climb in both directions, angels using ir wings to keep ir balance and a man scraping his knees going up. Is re an image eviction more powerful than Satan, great dragon, ancient serpent, thrown out heaven by a band angels? Jesus promises Nathanael that he will see angels descending and ascending upon Son Man. How is this supposed to happen and in what sense will it be real? Jesus is a work art, self-imagined, real in all realms. Jacob s ladder was set up from earth. Maybe when we come toward Jesus, as John s gospel says Nathanael did, we create ladder. This reflection was written by Jim Simpson. He is a member Grace Cadral Congregation Council and a graduate cadral s Education for Ministry program. 5
